There's a New, Revised Ouya Available

Is this thing available anywhere besides the US?

This seems like a pretty insignificant updates amongst insignificant updates. And then charging 30 bucks more for it, a year after the first one came out? Weird. The Ouya is weird.

I wonder if the Ouya can be turned into a Steam-streaming machine. If so, it can be a suitable option for those interested in having a low-profile machine on their living rooms, for example.

While I can appreciate the persistence of this company and the fact that they have not given up at this point. They should give up at this point.

This is a product no one should buy.

I happily use my OUYA as an emulation and streaming box. I often watch things on XBMC and I played three Final Fantasy games on it! It was so much nicer to play those games there because the PS1 versions I have are notoriously slow when battles start/end. Seriously it's like a cumulative 2 hours of time spent waiting for these things over the course of a 30 hour game. A better controller would be nice, but I just synced my PS3 controller with it which works 1,000,000,000x better. You never use the touchpad anyway, so it really doesn't matter. And the storage is cool, but honestly I just plugged a 32GB flash drive into the back and it's been fine for me.

And I remember people telling me there was a market for this machine.

When will we see the article about them entering Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection.

I still can't fucking believe this thing got made in the first place. Who the hell thought playing shitty phone games on a TV was appealing?

@erhard: going by the number of shitty android consoles currently available or about to become available a whole mess of people. Those other companies won't have the stradivarius of game controllers as a draw so they're obviously bound to fail even worse.

I'm no videegame industry expert, but console sales are driven by games. People buy the console to play the awesome games. What does OUYA have in it's library that's worthwhile? Aside from some emulation there's nothing you wouldn't just have on your phone already if you really wanted it.

Who would buy this? If you are that person tell me why.

this new model offers very minor revisions over the old one and costs more. Only difference is color, increase in internal storage, and an updated controller. Besides that, specs are all the same. Not anything like the smart phone/tablet market (for now)

They couldn't even manage to get their controller right.

Why would they RAISE the price? Do they want even less people to buy it?

Every time I go stroll down the Target electronics aisle, I see tucked away in the corner a small supply of Ouya's. They gather more and more dust with every visit. I wonder what the sell-through is, if any, of Ouya's in the wild like this.

Has anybody used this thing for streaming media ? How is it ? I'm actually tempted to buy this just for its DLNA capabilities.

A reduction in controller lag seems like a big deal if it's a noticeable difference, especially since that was a complaint at launch if I recall correctly. But yeah, phones are worse. I used to try to sell them for a living and it was hard to fake excitement for the next big thing when you knew the next next big thing was always around the corner.

Think I'll be waiting for the peer reviews once more..

I'll say one thing for this company: they're good at playing the hype machine.

@alanm26v5: Oh yeah, I forgot this has improved controller latency and wifi functionality. I guess that kind of sucks for people who bought last years, but at least theirs was cheaper.

Good on ya for having a positive experience with the thing! There are definitely some good ways to use it, and I've heard tales of enjoying the OUYA in the same way you are from some others. Basically, it's good to stream and play emulated games on.

I just don't get why the company doesn't see their own gizmo that way. If they dropped the controller entirely, sold this new one for like $60 bucks, and marketed it specifically to do those aforementioned things things with the additional ability to play Android games, I could see them actually moving some of these.

Offering a better version of a bad controller and selling it for MORE MONEY just makes no sense at all.

Shame.

Endlessly intrigued by the device, but I still don't want one and raising the price for features that aren't so much additional new things as fixes for old broken things does not inspire my confidence.

My pops once said, "No matter how hard you try and make the smell of shit smell like roses at the end of the day its still a pile of shit." To me it just makes this saying funnier cause they're charging an extra 40 bucks.

Jeff should buy it just so he would complain how shitty the new controller is.

I'll wait for woot to have refurbished (or new, who knows) model of the updated ouya available for $50 before I'll even think about buying it. It seems like such a bad deal otherwise.

I have an original Kickstarter Ouya that I haven't so much as taken out of it's packaging. It's literally been sitting on my shelve for almost a year. Unwanted and unloved. I can't dredge up enough interest to open the thing.

Well intentioned attempts that end up in failure makes me kinda feel sad and sorry.

You'd think there was something big at the intersection of Android/mobile gaming and console gaming. All those market analyst would tell you mobile is the next big thing. How could merging console and mobile fail? Sadly, it appears there isn't much that intersects those worlds. Does this provide some evidence that mobile gaming isn't cannibalizing console gaming as much as people think?

I'm still wondering why this thing exists. I think their heart was in the right place, but geez I don't understand who this thing is for, honestly. Maybe a super, SUPER niche audience?
