This Captain America Game is Channeling Mega Man, Super Mario Bros.

The world could use more games like this.

Gonna be straight with you guys: seeing this screen pop up totally made me freak out.

Stay with me for a moment here, folks.

In anticipation of Captain America: The First Avenger arriving into theaters, Marvel commissioned Big Pixel Studios to produce a Flash-based game called Captain America: Shield of Justice that's rather blatantly (in a great way) flexing its Mega Man and Super Mario Bros. influences.

Just playing through a few stages, I noticed Captain America blowing up into circular digital bits ala Mega Man, a familiar sound and hand/feet positioning while jumping in the vein of our friend Mario, a noise that sounds an awful lot like Super Mario Bros.' coin-collection sound effect and a rather amusing way to introduce the boss battles.

I'm sure there are plenty more to spot. Feel free to tell me how many I missed, commenters!

Goofy influences or not, for what it is--a Flash game that won't take you very long at all to play through--Captain America: Shield of Justice is a pretty fun, old school way to waste a lunch hour. And now I really want to play Mega Man 2.

If you missed it before, play the game right over here.

They should just re-issue that Capt America and the Avengers arcade game.

"I...CAN'T MOVE!" :)

It's not very great...at least in my opinion.

Posted by mustachioeugene
@PrioritySeven: It would be great if that line were in the new movie too, just as a very small throw-away reference.

Played it. It's a  pass.

I'm a fan of the music.

Having just watched Generation Kill on Blu Ray, the following came to mind...

 The Real Captain America

Wow, that's a shit game.

Meh!

Well there are worse games to rip off of.

When Scott Pilgrim did that with River City Ransom, Jeff shat all over it. That game had a kick-ass soundtrack.

That is one of my most favorite video game soundtracks of all time and some of my most favorite music in recent years. I find myself listening to it all the time.

Yeah it's kinda crappy. The background shifting looks cool, but the platforming controls feel wonky and the fighting is cheap.

Played this a few hours before. Not so great... I was well over-done by the time I hit the boss battle.

Wrong.

Way to miss the joke.

Would have worked better if space was jump and up was ultimate attack. That said, it is in no way any substitute for those two other games.

Posted by Turbo_Toaster

I'm getting terrible Scott Pilgrim vibes.

More stuff like this and less bad full retail movie games.

Posted by UnrealDP

Its pretty cool, but the music is pretty bad for what they're trying to go for. Music aside the game is pretty great compared to the majority of movie properties.

Posted by Hakkesshu

Neat idea, but this is pretty fucking bad. It also doesn't play anything like Mega Man or SMB.

A key card?

Well, that's the actor Alexander Skardsgrad, who is an actor playing the 'Iceman'... there's a real dude who is the real dude who is the real Iceman. So if you must...

....wow it looks cool but it is terrible...

god damn flaoty jumps

So-called "faux-backs" are nothing new/worth getting excited over, I'm afraid. Lest we forget Scott Pilgrim.

109,920 points.  Beat that, duders! ;)

Some of the physics is floaty and you sometimes get stuck against a corner or ceiling and an enemy, but, hey, the continue system is very forgiving.

(By the way, I really enjoyed "Setting them up the bomb" at the end. Very nice.)
Posted by TehFlan

It felt way too loose, but at the same time was super easy. I didn't really like it.

Posted by Eyz

Awesome!
They shoulda done a 2D game like that on the DS rather than the dull 3D game....

(like, you know, Wayforward's Thor)

Posted by BBQBram

Heh, pretty funny.

Posted by BlazeHedgehog

I feel unclean. This is nostalgic exploitation!

Posted by Sammo21

@PrioritySeven: I am sure they will next year when.......the avengers comes out....

Posted by redlitez76

i liked it I wish they would sell that one and the thor one as minis that way i could them on my psp.

Posted by Detrian

I thought this would be good if it was on the frontpage but it plays like shit. Are we really stooping down to "Hey guys check out this flash game" levels when it's a slow news day?

Posted by ImperiousRix

Cool in concept.  If it played better, and there was a tad more to it, I'd definitely be into it.

Posted by PrioritySeven

@sammo21: Yeah, keep forgetting that's on the horizon.

Posted by Sammo21

@PrioritySeven: I hope we get an HD Remix style re-release with the new members from the movie (though I'm not holding my breath)
