This Captain America Game is Channeling Mega Man, Super Mario Bros.

Stay with me for a moment here, folks.

In anticipation of Captain America: The First Avenger arriving into theaters, Marvel commissioned Big Pixel Studios to produce a Flash-based game called Captain America: Shield of Justice that's rather blatantly (in a great way) flexing its Mega Man and Super Mario Bros. influences.

Just playing through a few stages, I noticed Captain America blowing up into circular digital bits ala Mega Man, a familiar sound and hand/feet positioning while jumping in the vein of our friend Mario, a noise that sounds an awful lot like Super Mario Bros.' coin-collection sound effect and a rather amusing way to introduce the boss battles.

I'm sure there are plenty more to spot. Feel free to tell me how many I missed, commenters!

Goofy influences or not, for what it is--a Flash game that won't take you very long at all to play through--Captain America: Shield of Justice is a pretty fun, old school way to waste a lunch hour. And now I really want to play Mega Man 2.

When Scott Pilgrim did that with River City Ransom, Jeff shat all over it. That game had a kick-ass soundtrack.

That is one of my most favorite video game soundtracks of all time and some of my most favorite music in recent years. I find myself listening to it all the time.

Yeah it's kinda crappy. The background shifting looks cool, but the platforming controls feel wonky and the fighting is cheap.

Played this a few hours before. Not so great... I was well over-done by the time I hit the boss battle.

Way to miss the joke.

Would have worked better if space was jump and up was ultimate attack. That said, it is in no way any substitute for those two other games.

More stuff like this and less bad full retail movie games.

Its pretty cool, but the music is pretty bad for what they're trying to go for. Music aside the game is pretty great compared to the majority of movie properties.

Neat idea, but this is pretty fucking bad. It also doesn't play anything like Mega Man or SMB.

i liked it I wish they would sell that one and the thor one as minis that way i could them on my psp.

I thought this would be good if it was on the frontpage but it plays like shit. Are we really stooping down to "Hey guys check out this flash game" levels when it's a slow news day?

Cool in concept.  If it played better, and there was a tad more to it, I'd definitely be into it.
