Those Who Pre-Order Dungeon Siege III on Steam Get the Other Siege Games Free

Get two old ones after purchasing a new game at full price! What a deal!

The June 2011 launch for Dungeon Siege III is fast approaching and one of the first pre-order deals involving the dungeon-crawler has been made public. On Steam, with a full pre-purchase of the third game, you’ll receive the first two Dungeon Sieges free of charge. It's worth noting that these two games are only available on Steam as part of this reserve deal, so ponying up the dough for DS III is the only way at the moment that you can grab DS and DS II on Steam.

In the press release announcing the above information, publisher Square Enix was quick to say that DS III will launch with traditional Steamworks suite support, so expect the usual perks like cloud saving, achievements, auto-updates, and DLC hooks to be written into the software.

Dungeon Siege III is in the works at Obsidian Entertainment, the same studio that put out Fallout: New Vegas in 2010. In addition to a PC release, the game is slated to hit the PS3 and the Xbox 360 this June. No word on what kind of pre-order bonuses the console versions might end up having at traditional retailers, such as GameStop and the like, but it's hard to imagine that it'd be anything quite as cool as what Steam players are getting--probably just an in-game sword, or something. See, PC players? Some companies do still love you.

I'm pretty sure that DS and DSII had multiplayer, which is not included with the pre-order...then it is some loss.

So how were the first two games?  I'm asking because I know practically nothing about the franchise.

I played the snot out of DS1, it's an amazing notDiablo 2  game, a great dungeon-and-wilderness romp solo or with friends, and I am looking forward to this like crazy.

Even though my way of doing DS1 was to use the same attack over and over to make it the strongest thing ever, fun challenge and handicap as dull as it may sound. May DS III rock our socks.

Both DS and DS II had multi-player that these steam releases do support for some reason . If  i remember correctly you were able to enter a friends IP directly without having to go through a central server so I don't know why they haven't included multi-player here.

Exactly. If I'm going to be playing a single player Diablo clone, I'd play Torchlight.

I was gonna get up in arms, get my panties in a bunch over the lack of co-op, but then I remembered I always played single-player anyways. Not so sure about DS3, but might be worth getting 3 games for 60 bucks.

It's total bullshit that DS1 and 2 are on steam and the only way you can get them is to pre-purchase DS3. They're just capitalizing on the fact that DS2 is so hard to find and so expensive right now just so they can sell DS3.

Are these free games optimized to run on current gen system similar to how GoG.com provides it's content?  If it isn't I hope Steam pre orderees have their decade old systems kickin around the attic.

Wow, DS2 is sought after? I thought the game was garbage, was contemplating throwing my discs away. DS1 was such a better game.

I wish they would sell DS1 for like $10.  I own the CDs, such an awesome game, but I would buy it again to get it on my Steam account on the cheap.

This is the first time they've been on Steam. They'll probably release them seperately closer to the launch of DS3.

As for the multiplayer component, Steam isn't selling a 'gimped' version of the game, the multiplayer simply doesn't exist any longer. Microsoft Games Studios and Gamespy pulled the plug on the multiplayer servers years ago. There's a few .ini edits you can do and run the titles in a psuedo-LAN multiplayer, but there's posts about it on the Steam forums.

Sorry Obsidian, I do like your games but I'm not going to pay release day prices for games which won't be patched into a reasonably playable condition until a month or more after the fact. Besides, buying your games at discount prices a few months after release makes all of the flaws and game-breaking bugs less annoying even if they don't get fixed.

Dungeon Siege - these are the games, that play themselves - right?

Great deal for those, who want/like this series. Valve/Steam needs to establish this idea for ALL future sales. Buy one new - get all old ones for free! :)

I like how this deal is happening on steam.  They have been doing that with a fair bit of games.  Pre order portal 2 and get a free copy of portal, already have portal? you can then gift it to a friend it is a nice situation in addition to the usual 5 dollar discount for pre ordering.  A few other games have done that recently too.  Pre order Red Faction Armageddon and get a free copy of Guerrilla.

If there is a right way to do a pre order I think it is something like this.  Plus the flat out discount that is given half the time too for simply pre ordering is very nice.  So much better than "hey here is this nice little bonus in game that you will never care about, ever"

Course when it is an item you actually do care about that kinda makes it worse >_>  But this is I think a good way to pre order, if you pre order you get a free previous version of a game [can gift it too if you already have it!]  and if you happen to not pre order it, it isn't like now you missed out on cool stuff in your game like half the other lame pre order bonuses out there.

Seriously though, the discount thing of some 5 dollars or so that happens on so many steam games is awesome.  If you are willing to throw down money blindly on a game that you have no idea will actually be good or not, and these pre orders are apparently "sooo" important to these places like they act, you should get a few bucks off, then you don't get burned quite as badly when it turns out the game was total garbage haha.

I hate pre-ordering games through Steam because they take your money immediately, not once the game is unlocked.  If you change your mind and want to cancel a pre-order, you have to get in contact with Steam support and hope they'll issue you a refund.  I bet by giving you Dungeon Siege 1 & 2, Steam has grounds to refuse your refund.  That's freaking shady for a game that doesn't come out until late June.

DS3 belongs in a pool of garbage next to pile of unopened "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale" DVDs. Also, there's a dead animal turning into a mutant as a direct result from the radioactive waste of time that is the Dungeon Siege IP.

@rebgav: In fairness, Obsidian are really great developers, it always seems to be the publishers forcing them to release games before they're finished that have caused problems.

But I have to agree..  I don't see this as a particularly good deal when I can wait a few months, pick up the game for a fraction of the price and get the original two on a Steam sale for £1 each.  I also hate how Steam handle pre-orders.

I agree that their games are good, I do keep buying them. I'm not sure they can blame deadlines for the state of their releases on day one, they do seem to trade almost exclusively in quickie sequels.

I'd love to see them hook up with Valve or id. It could be a good fit, producing sequels and expansions for a company with reliable tech.

Interesting, but from I read from the above comments, seems like DS3 is more than enough to keep you occupied since it sounds like it's an online dungeon crawler.  Don't really see the point in playing an extinct online game.
