THQ Delays South Park: The Stick of Truth, Drops Devil's Third Altogether

Some major changes to THQ's lineup are afoot.

THQ had its annual investor's call this afternoon, and with it came a few significant changes in the publisher's upcoming lineup of games. Most notably, the Obsidian-developed South Park: The Stick of Truth has been pushed back into next year, and Tomonobu Itagaki's Devil's Third will no longer be published under the THQ banner.

Itagaki's first non-Tecmo title is now looking for a new publisher.
Itagaki's first non-Tecmo title is now looking for a new publisher.

South Park was announced just a few months ago, and had originally been scheduled to release later this fall. Now THQ has listed it as a fiscal Q4 release. Obsidian was hit with layoffs earlier this year, including members of the South Park team. However, that wasn't cited as a reason for the delay, nor was any reason for that matter.

Devil's Third was the first game scheduled to be published from Valhalla Game Studios, the studio founded by former Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki. Originally, the third-person action title had been targeted for release in early 2013, but now that will only come to fruition if THQ can quickly find a new home for the game. CEO Brian Farrell stated that the game "no longer fit THQ's profitability profile," and that they are currently talking to other companies about taking on the project.

When asked for further comment during the Q&A, Farrell explained that the company that produced the game engine that was originally to be used in Devil's Third went out of business, which meant that THQ had to step in and help them build a new engine. That expense, coupled with the current value of the Yen, factored into in the decision to drop the title.

Elsewhere, it was revealed that the Saints Row: The Third expansion pack, Enter the Dominatrix, will arrive in September as a stand-alone product, which can be played regardless as to whether you have the original game.

I hope that South Park game does actually come out, it looks fucking great.

I have seen nothing of it, are we talking trailers or is there a gameplay/alpha build video somewhere?

The screenshots that are out just look like screencaps from an episode of South Park. It's a little surreal to see it. Also, it's being written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and it sounds like they've got some real affinity for the old-school RPG genre that the game is going for.

You should really check some stuff out about it.

That was me indirectly asking you to please link to whatever stuff I should check out about it :P Unless we're talking screenshots on Giant Bomb only.

Isn't Obsidian helping out with Wasteland 2? I'd rather see that anyway. I couldn't give less of a shit about South Park at this point.

To a limited extent. One of their designers is helping with the game, and Obsidian is also providing some tool support.

Either way, this doesn't look good for the South Park game. However, I have to imagine that unless development of Devil's Third is truly fucked up, THQ will likely find a new publisher to sell the rights to without much trouble.

So you ARE talking about giant bomb screenshots... I expected a gameplay video or something because you made it sound like you saw the game in action.
Well, thanks.

Sega will pick up Devil's Third. Calling it now.

I think so too.

I doubt it, it's been rumored that Sega just canned Bayonetta 2, so picking up another Japanese 3rd person technical action game doesn't seem likely

A rumour that Bayonetta's producer ridiculed on Twitter.

I wonder if that INsane game is still coming…
It's supposed to come out in 2013. THQ existing in 2013 seems highly unlikely as does the release of inSANE. At this point, I just hope THQ releases Darksiders II on time and then calls it a day.

Guillermo del Toro might set a new record for fastest canned trilogy plan, right? I mean, Too Human and Advent Rising at least released part 1. And Shenmue made it to part 2. So the trend now might be to announce games and then cancel them, only to be followed by cancelling a trilogy before announcing it!

(Sorry for the ramble)

And if THQ burns, Vigil, Volition and Relic better come out of it whole!

heres hoping for a delay that puts Devils Third into next generation. This console generation has hit its max with threaded AI. plus, using mytics engine seemed out of place for itagaki and co.

note: this gama has a jill valentine look-a-like thats looks more like JV than current JV. Which isn't hard to fathom.

So are they making enter the dominatrix a $60 stand alone product or will it be an "Undead Nightmare" kind of thing?

Best news of this that Saints Row add on is standalone. Traded in my copy after playing it for 30 hours because I was a broke ass college student. Now that I have graduated I'm just unemployed

Eh, have you read Kamiya's twitter? Most of the time he doesn't even seem like he likes being on it. The rumor is more than likely true, either that or the finished product is going to get pushed back to be one of the final games on the xbox and PS3 in 2013, not great news when apparently it was pretty far along.

My bet is Square Enix, however.

Yup. Gonna be Square.

Warner Brothers. I'm calling it.

I'll back that call.

Not a bad bet. I'll be interesting to see what happens at E3.

Warner Bros. is not a bad call either.

I don't really think South Park needs a reason given for a delay. It's Obsidian, and while I appreciate their effort and ambition, we all know they can't polish games for crap. Well, Dungeon Siege III was pretty well polished, but that's one against a dozen, it feels like. KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout New Vegas, Alpha Protocol...oh, Alpha Protocol. *sniff* Who cares that South Park was delayed? If it gets the game polished, so be it. It's about time Obsidian learned that lesson; people don't remember delays, they just remember if a game is a disappointment.

As for Devil's Third, man...I KNEW it had something to do with the game engine! That game was announced far too long ago. I figured that a 3 year dev cycle (probably more) meant that they were working on an engine from scratch. Super dumb; should've licensed Unreal 3 or something like the rest of the world and tweak it. But it's nice to hear THQ engineers helped them finish building it. I hope they find another publisher. Seems like something EA or Warner Bros. might pick up, considering they did get behind Shadow of the Damned and Lollipop Chainsaw. Maybe even Bethesda, since they just plain bought Shinji Mikami's studio. But yeah; it would need insane promotion to sell well enough to become profitable I bet - crossing my fingers THQ finds a new publisher for it.

Good luck THQ! I am a fan, and as long as you release games like Darksiders and Metro, I don't like hearing about any troubles for you. I hope your next year brings some awesome games with it; Insane could be good, and if Obsidian nails South Park, it could fill the void for a new Paper Mario. I'm even looking forward to Homefront 2 now that Free Radical/Crytek UK is helping KAOS Montreal. You guys have some real promising franchises, that aren't nearly as stagnant as the creatively bankrupt, yearly annualized super franchises that EA, Activision and Ubi Soft keep pumping out.

Expect THQ to delay it to 2016, and then announce a week later that it was actually cancelled last year. Followed by THQ selling their remaining uDraw stock for $1 apiece and closing their doors forever.
