Three Times Fast: Papa's Palace of Pain

Sega's dropping some nifty grindhouse-looking promotional materials for the next House of the Dead game, Overkill.

Thrill! Chill! Kill!
Thrill! Chill! Kill!
Sega hurled a handful of new assets at us today for House of the Dead: Overkill, the latest Wii installment in the ultra-campy light-gun series. They're from the first level, "Papa's Palace of Pain." Say that three times fast, then check out all the shots at the bottom of this post.

I can't say a light-gun shooter does much for me in this day and age, but I can at least appreciate Sega's devotion to what House of the Dead is all about: shooting mad zombies and delivering horrible sub-B-movie dialogue. This does look pretty damn B-movie, you have to admit.

Here's the description they sent along with these assets, though I mainly posted this so I could put up the excellent faux movie poster Sega passed along with the assets. Here's the enormous full-size version, which is so alarmingly high-resolution, you could probably print out at your local Kinko's if you wanted to slap it on your wall.

The first mission of The House of the Dead: OVERKILL is also Special Agent G’s first mission. He has been dispatched by his agency, the secretive AMS, to investigate Papa Ceasar’s connection to a host of mysterious disappearances. At the exact moment G arrives, Detective Washington also turns up at the gates of the plantation house, on the trail of his missing father.

From the outset a tension exists between these hardboiled professionals, each feeling the other is stepping on their turf. But, when mutants attack, the Detective and the Agent are forced to accept that two guns are better than one and that an immediate and violent response is required.

The pair storm the plantation house grounds, gunning their way between trees and shrubs, capping mutants left, right and centre. Before long they reach the doors of the plantation house itself. They break in and find the place overrun with mutants. Something has gone badly wrong here…

Inside the Plantation House, a host of sick and twisted surprises awaits our heroes, and holed up in the basement is their nemesis, Papa Ceasar, with the first surprise in what promises to be a long, dangerous night in Bayou City.

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL uncovers the ugly, terrifying, red hot secrets behind the House of the Dead; the daddy of all over-the-top shooters.  While staying true to the classic gameplay this hugely successful SEGA series is getting a new retro look, with distinctive graphics, sound and attitude that will add to its horror cool status.  Plus, thanks to the Wii Remote™, players will fight off zombies when they get too close; pistol-whipping jaws off and smashing in skulls with their shotgun butt.

Aaaaaand the screenshots. Feel like playing some more House of the Dead, yourself?

Hell yeah, I'm ready for some more House of the Dead. I haven't used the Wii gun shell-thing, but I imagine it'll be likened to having the arcade experience in your own home, and that's some good shit right there.

Bring me Time Crisis for the Wii, please.

I was thinking a while back how I was done with rail shooters, but then Gears 2 had several sequences that were just that... and I liked 'em. I guess I like it more as a sauce than the main course these days.

I really dig the grindhouse/old horror comic themed artwork they've been putting out for this game. Shame this is only coming out for the Wii but I understand why, probably a safe bet since only one game uses the light gun on PS3 and was there ever a light gun game for 360?

If ever there were a system to keep light gun games alive, the Wii is it. This looks really promising.

I am not sure about this game, but I will give it a chance. The Umbrella Chronicles really surprised me, so this should be cool.

This is actually the way these games should have gone a long time ago.  The genre hasn't really improved since Freedom Force on the NES, the only advances were in the technology.  While these have always been really bad stories with cliché-ridden set pieces and one dimensional characters, they were always taking themselves way too seriously to be even pathetically humorous.  Now they finally took the hint and embraced the ridiculous while realizing full well how stupid these games were all this time.  Instead of running home crying in embarrassment, they took it in stride and pushed it to 11 with a newfound sense of humor.

Need for Speed needs to take notes on this and go full-tilt on the stupid with the next game.  I want to see a Most Wanted 2 or Carbon 2.

I wanted to try The Umbrella Chronicles, but didn't. I'll keep my eye on this and see what happens.

This game's style is just incredibly cool.
I'm hoping we see it adopted by other games in the future.

The Grindhouse style by itself is just win. Add that with house of the dead, and that is just fucking gold right there.

I still love rail shooters. Infact, I love games where they test your reflexes all during one lunch break. I just don't have the time these days to devout my time to some long epic game. Sometimes I wanna play something short, and fun. Like Sin & Punishment, or DK Jungle Beat, or Ghost Squad. Heck, even the old Super Mario Bros games. Those are games that you can take in short bursts and still find yourself coming back again and still have fun.

More games need to be more like that. THEY NEED TO BE MORE ARCADE LIKE!

I just love how one of the screen shots has "hardcore violence" in it.

Lightgun games on the Wii are terrible - rather than directly correlating to where you are pointing on the screen itself, the Wiimote tracks its relative position based on the sensor, making playing the game more akin to guiding a mouse pointer than it goes actually aiming a gun.  While I hate having to buy gun pheriphals that don't typically work with most HDTV's, I'd rather play House of the Dead 3 on the Xbox than use the Wiimote in something like this.  The shell does absolutely nothing to solve this problem - it is inherent to the design of the Wii itself and will always make shooting games on the system not as fun as most would expect.

The Wii can never emulate a light gun properly. I say quit yapping and just follow the cursor.

This is the only reason why I'm holding on to my Wii atm.

What you guys need to do is NOT buy the shitty "Wii Zapper" cause it sucks, but instead, buy yourself one (or two, if you'd like to have some double fisted action going on) of the Wii Perfect Shot by Nyko.
Definitely the best lightgun shell out for the Wii, unlike the zapper, it actually, has, oh, I dunno... some springback on the trigger! Not to mention it's nice shape, and it still has a port for your nunchuck in the bottom. I totally reccomend it, it's the only way I play my Umbrella chronicles or HotD 2&3. And, yeah... it's gonna be what I use to play myself some HotD: Overkill. (and NO, I'm not being paid for this glowing endorsement)

Oh, also... if you have your sensor bar configured properly, (like you should have done when you BOUGHT YOUR Wii!) then you'll have no problem playing a lightgun game on the Wii. Hell, it's a lot better than the lightguns we had previously, for the Dreamcast and Saturn and whatnot.

I played Ghost Squad without cursor lining up the sight of the wii remote, that game like HotD 2&3 allow you to calibrate your wii remote in order to do so, pretty sure that is what a light gun experience is about. Perhaps you meant something else?

i haven't played a house of the dead game since the second one on the dreamcast. interesting looking game but i don't have super high hopes for it unless of course nintendo releases a actual light-gun for its system.
