Today in Dickish Hackery: Bethesda Latest Victim of Personal Data Thieves

LulzSec posse goes after multiple game company websites, steals personal user information.

Anyone else really, really tired of hackers using game company websites as personal punching bags? After two grueling months of Sony's laborious effort to get its online systems back in order, various hacker collectives owning and disowning claims to a slew of targeted attacks, the US Congress getting involved, and no one being able to play SOCOM online, we thought maybe, just maybe, this whole debacle had finally come to a close.

Haven't Brink players really suffered enough at this point? Do we need to dig the knife deeper?
Haven't Brink players really suffered enough at this point? Do we need to dig the knife deeper?

But hey, of course it hasn't, because there are still hackers out there who are total assholes, and they still think it's really hilarious to hack into game company websites and steal their users' personal information.

In this case, it's the rogue sect of self-righteous chuckleheads known as LulzSec, or Lulz Security. These are the guys who have, most recently, hacked into the websites of Nintendo, Codemasters, and Epic Games, seemingly for no reason other than "because they can," and in some cases ganking large chunks of personal user data (though so far, no personal financial information).

The latest victim is Bethesda, whose official website for Brink was compromised over the weekend. Bethesda states that, once again, no credit card or other financial information was taken, but that some usernames, email addresses, and passwords may have been taken. As if things weren't bad enough when the Sony downtime prevented people from playing Brink online at launch, now this. Sheesh.

The LulzSec Twitter account, somewhere in between bouts of self-congratulation and complaints about their personal YouTube video stream speeds, states that they might not release any of the personal user info, but will definitely release some of the other company data extracted from Bethesda's servers.

No one seems entirely sure what, exactly, it is that has inspired LulzSec to go after company page after company page, but if the idea is to craft some kind of elaborate piece of hacking-based performance art comedy on the absurdly low security standards employed by publishers, for serious guys, we get it. I know it worked for Urkel for a while, but doing the same gag over and over and over again doesn't somehow make it more funny over time. After a while, it just starts to sound like insanity.

Cheers to Lulzsec for continuing to show all the idiots of the world that they need to be more responsible for their personal security online. Same goes for their pron.com crack this weekend, where they grabbed tons of account information and plan to try to use that data to break into their facebook and twitter accounts to tell their friends and family about their pron.com subscriptions. Some day, people will learn not to use the same fucking account information and passwords at every site, not to give their personal information to every entity, and admins will learn to fucking employ some god damn security in their networks and servers and databases.

@DonPixel: Unfortunately it's because Lulzsec are....pretty good. As immature and ridiculous as they might come across, don't be fooled, they're talented hackers.

And good hackers know how to cover their tracks.

This says more about how archaic anti hacking measures are. How long have proxy servers been around? And they're still all you need if you wanna access something anonymously. And have been for a decade. Hacking isn't rocket science, and that should be proof just by reading some of the dumb shit these people are saying.

I thought the name "LulzSec" came from the term "nullsec" from EVE Online.

In fact, now that I think about it... this all sounds exactly like the sort of messed up shenanigans you'd find in EVE Online.

@dudacles: I completely agree, and there is nothing in Alex's story that is factually inaccurate or wrong.

But these 'Lulzsec' guys have proven themselves to be petty, childish and worst of all, talented. A shitty combination to come up against.

My point was simply, why risk provocation when just reporting on the story will do?

I really don't understand how someone can go "well it's mostly the publisher's fault anyway. They were asking for it!"

Sure, they need to get their security in gear, but you don't thank the fucking burglar for showing you the error of your ways, you throw that fucker in jail and get your shit back, and then buy a big goddamn lock that you put on all your doors and never leave the house again.

Cus then the terrorists win or something. No really. If you can't voice your opinion on something because you so fear the repercussions (which in GB's case would be someone hacking all of the subscriber information) then you're being terrorized. Like, the legal definition.

Yeah I'm sure if someone broke into your house, took nothing, and left, you'd be grateful to him for teaching you a lesson. Be realistic, no one likes having their personal space invaded, "educational" purposes or not. And they shouldn't have any reason to like it. Would it a be a woman's fault for being raped twice? Well in some backwards ass societies some people would consider it shameful and drive them out of the house. Doesn't mean it's right. Worse things can happen, some malicious hacking group could have hacked these places for personal gain. But worse things can ALWAYS happen, that doesn't mean the horrible thing should happen in the first place to prepare someone for things that are worse that that horrible thing.

How much longer will the general public tolerate this kind of behavior? Pretty soon, voters will demand greater government accountability and oversight of the internet and then we can kiss the internet as we know it goodbye. The loss of the last great uncensored platform for the masses and over what? Petulant children wanting to wag their dongs in everyone's face?

I almost wish they would hack Giant Bomb. Just so these apologists can see these hackers for the childish bullies they are instead of e-Robin Hoods. They can't hide behind lofty ideals when they retaliate over name calling.

I'm tired of companies halfassing security and then crying like babies when they get owed. Start firing 'web developers' and hire real coders who know enough to sanitize user input strings.

But it's for TEH LULZ you guys! Come on! Hilarious!

Even the dated references in the name "Lulzsec" go to show that the organization (I use that word loosely) is crying for attention, repeating a joke years after it fell out of favor just because they heard their big brother say it.

See, this is when the intelligent and self-aware news reporter takes a step back and realises that reporting these kinds of acts only encourages these miscreants to continue digging into that barrel for cheap attention.

I recommend ignoring them and moving on. That's all they're worth.

It is shitty when it happens to a company you love, but at the same time the IT departments need to step up their game... especially if they're running *NIX servers. Gotta pro up that shit.

It's not the equivalent of breaking into someone's house, it's the equivalent of stealing from some dude's outside fruit stand. They're not teaching anyone anything, they're just tryina be all epic-win or whatever on the internet. Mad props to Alex Navarro fr not being a tiny bit impressed by any of this.

I though Epic megagames hack was a nice stunt after that egocentric fuckwad made a commment about Sony on GameTrailers. Just as he spoke I though: " god I wish someone hacked the fuck out of epic for this". And lo and behold, it happened. It didn't surprise me however that Sweeney apologized instead of the fuckwad.

Seeing this made me realize that LulzSec has become nothing more than a bunch of petty, spineless hackers bent on being dicks on the Internet just because the ones they may have (or not, as the case may be) in real life are too small or nonexistent.

Say what you will about Anonymous, but know that at the very least, they're going after groups that are ACTUALLY bad, like Scientology and the Westboro Baptist Church. They're nonviolent protestors who are fighting for the continued freedom of information on the Internet worldwide (which, if you haven't heard, has been threatened as of late). Whenever they do something "for teh lulz" nowadays, they usually don't attack an innocent target, as it threatens their public image.

LulzSec, on the other hand, has no real cause or movement behind them. They're just a bunch of immature hackers who are pretending to recreate "Hackers" just so that they can imagine making out with Angelina Jolie.

Hack the planet, my ass.
