Torchlight Coming To XBLA As Part Of "Arcade House Party"

Beginning this February, Microsoft will release five games under this brand new banner.

The first Xbox Live Arcade promotion of 2011 will begin next month with the release of the Contra-esque Hard Corps Uprising on Feb. 16. Hard Corps will then be followed up by four more titles, each under the banner of "Arcade House Party," a brand-spanking new promotion that Microsoft made a lot of noise about at its CES press conference yesterday afternoon.

And there's a good reason: one of the games following Hard Corps' release will be PopCap Games' uber-addictive Bejeweled Blitz. Ubisoft's Beyond Good & Evil HD will also see a release under this window, as well as the long-rumored console release of Torchlight, Runic Games' fantastic dungeon-crawler. That's right--I said Torchlight.

Runic hit the ground running with the game's announcement, wanting to get ahead of any negative speculation about the upcoming port of the PC game. In a recent forum post, Runic boss Travis Baldtree confirms that the XBLA version's controls and UI have been reworked. Baldtree says that you'll now have direct analog-stick control of your character, while combat will feel similar to games like Dark Alliance or Champions of Norrath

== TEASER ==Even though all skills and "pretty much everything from the PC" will make it over to the XBLA version, some mechanics-- such as skills, spells, and item-mapping--have been altered for ease of use on a controller, Baldtree says. Secondary weapon sets, on the other hand, have been completely stripped because Runic discovered that there wasn't a good way to include that mechanic.

Expect some new-new stuff, too. On top of three new armor sets, a new "Chakawary" pet, and some new random quests, Torchlight for XBLA will be using some "goodies" from Torchlight II, including better loading times, better animation blends, and improved auto-mapping.

Lastly, Arcade House Party will also see the release of Full House Poker. Hard Corps is the only game with a solid date thus far, but I'd imagine that more release information is coming soon.

You can check out the Runic forum thread for a bit more information about the forthcoming port, and Scrawl for some supposed XBLA screenshots. The respective wiki pages for all the other releases should have anything you're looking for.

I don't know about you guys, but I think Torchlight loses a lot of it's charm as soon as you remove the fact that you won't be going CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK

They have an XBLA event every month it seems.  I'm definitely going to be getting BG&E.  I never played it on the PS2. Hopefully it holds up.  I already own torchlight thanks to steam.  Not sure if I'm going to double dip on it.

BG&E is the only game of those I want to play. I can't even imagine how stressful it would be trying to select the correct gem fast with a controller and I already have torchlight.

"Arcade House Party" seems like it will be a winner as far as promotions go.  The list of games seems to be pretty solid.  I'm gonna pass on Torchlight, only because I have it on the PC, but what a great game to go onto consoles.

I know Runic Games made a lot of money on Torchlight on the PC but this release on XBLA is probably going to be even bigger in terms of sales.  Who knows though, the game got a lot of buzz around the PC and they were wise to sell it on Steam, where it has been part of daily/weekend/holiday sales deals throughout its release.  I really have high hopes for Torchlight 2 and the "MMO" in the same likeness that they are planning so I am curious to find out just how much success this XBLA release does for them.  Either way its a good move.

Neat! IDK if I will get it for XBLA since I already have it but I think it will translate pretty well to console.

I find it kind of bullshit that the developer is quoted as saying they were trying to get the PS3 and XBLA version out by the end of last year, now suddenly its Microsoft published and exclusive to that console.  When asked why they said they were glad as they could barely do this version.  WTF?

Maybe MS just secured timed exclusivity?
Maybe it was just a quicker port?
Maybe MS just announced it and Sony has yet to make a similar announcement?

I read through the news article twice and still can't find the words that it's exclusive to XBLA. Am I missing something?

Also, for all you know it can be Sony screwing it up somehow?

Maybe.  That's certainly true for PC, but I kind of feel like it'd be foolish for them to release a Torchlight now without it.

Has nothing to do with Sony screwing anything up.  Same thing goes for why Bioware is doing what it is in handling the ME storyline stuff in ME2.  Microsoft published the first, so it can't be on Ps3.

So we're getting major XBLA releases THREE TIMES A YEAR NOW? (Sure, end of the year isn't an official major release season, but if Costume Quest, Super Meat Boy, Pinball FX 2 and Pac-Man CEDX all launch at the same time, I'm counting it.) I'll totally support this, this is fantastic.

Specifically, I'm excited to finally play Beyond Good & Evil, while Torchlight and Bejeweled Blitz will be great too. I can't say much about Hard Corps as I've never really been a Contra person, but I'll definitely play the demo for it as well as the slightly lackluster Full House Poker.

I do hope that Summer of Arcade is still mostly new games, though. I know that the re-releases of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Turtles in Time probably sold better than Monday Night Combat or Castlevania HD, but the year that the release schedule was 'Splosion Man, Trials HD, and Shadow Complex was freaking amazing.

Let's hope for another year of sweet XBLA content!

I'm pretty confident that MS will charge more for Torchlight on XBLA than Valve does on Steam. SO happy that I cancelled that fraud service known as Live.

I just got a windows phone 7 so I hope this means I can get it on there.
Although I don't know if there would be a good control setup for it on a touchscreen phone.

But I guess that Torchlight is kinda well known for its Clicky, clicky uncomplicated control system so here's to hoping for it. (Crosses fingers.)

For £3 on Steam it was great, but not sure I would of paid more. Torchlight 2 with multiplayer however, will be a different story.

I think it's weird that the release I'm most interested in for this block of releases is Full House Poker. That might be partially due to my regret for not picking up Texas Hold 'Em when it was free, but I'm hoping the live show stuff is interesting, as well.

No co-op in the Torchlight port? that's the only thing that could drive me to buy that game again on XBLA, i enjoyed what i played of the demo, and bought it on Steam, but have never touched it since. Direct control sounds good but with no Co-op i may as well wait til they port Torchlight II over.

Hard Corps i'll most likely get, maybe the poker game if it has anything interesting going for it. Still haven't finished my PS2 copy of Beyond Good & Evil.

Torchlight takes next to no resources on a PC to play, and even has a "netbook" mode for really shitty hardware.  If you want to play it, do yourself a favor and pick it up on Steam to play the way it's meant to be played.

Also, the mod scene for Torchlight on the PC is kickin' yo.

I love it when Microsoft does these Arcade House Parties/Summer of Arcade/whatever they called the Raskulls/ilimilo/keflings thing.

I missed out on Beyond Good and Evil, Hard Corps look awesome, and I expected Torchlight XBLA was never going to come out. I'm excited!
