Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Announcement Reveals Dinobots, Sadness

High Moon Studios' follow-up to War for Cybertron will reportedly be grittier, and darker, despite still being about robots who turn into cars.

Following the billion dollar showing Transformers: Dark of the Moon had in theaters this past summer, Transformers nostalgia has either reached a feverish, delusional pitch, or become the most baffling, insulting, painful thing in the world, depending on who you ask. For the latter folk, you can just go ahead and sit this announcement out, as we're going to be talking a whole bunch about robots that transform into stuff.

Is it weird that the first thing I thought of when I saw this image was when Omar found Brandon's body in season one The Wire?
Is it weird that the first thing I thought of when I saw this image was when Omar found Brandon's body in season one The Wire?

Revealed today as Game Informer's November cover, Activision and High Moon Studios unveiled Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, the follow-up to 2009's generally liked non-movie Transformers game, Transformers: War for Cybertron. For anyone who didn't play that game, uh, spoilers, I guess. Cybertron falls. Oops?

Of course, the G.I. guys are keeping the bulk of the details entombed within the confines of the upcoming November magazine, but based on the dual covers revealed for the game, we can already presume a darker, grittier tone to this sequel. One cover features a mournful Optimus Prime cradling the metallic corpse of Bumblebee, which just turned my six-year-old-self into a shrieking, sobbing mess, much as when Optimus died in the Transformers animated film. Oh, uh, spoilers there too, I guess.

Before anyone starts getting into long-winded debates about whether robotic creatures can truly "die," given their presumed lack of a soul, or at least insofar as spiritually minded people understand them to exist, I would just like to point out that the other cover also features the long-absent, self-referential hero Grimlock, leader of the Dinobots and frequent referrer of himself in the third person. When you realize that, within this universe, there exists the giant dinosaur robot equivalent of Rickey Henderson, trying to debate whether these creatures contain an incorporeal essence that exists outside of their physical being seems more than a little bit silly. It's a robot. That turns into a dinosaur. Stop it.

We'll all undoubtedly learn much more about Fall of Cybertron in next month's Game Informer. Or we'll learn more from the sites that pick up next month's Game Informer and reprint all of the pertinent information. One of the two.

Why would a robot transform into a dinosaur? Wouldn't it make more sense for a dinosaur robot to transform into a vehicle? Or just stay dinosaur shaped?

I guess I'm just thinking about it too much.

Also, if they're still on Cybertron, then how could it turn into an Earth dinosaur? THEY DON'T HAVE T-REXES ON CYBERTRON!

I liked the first game. The main campaign was kinda mindless and largely forgettable, but the multiplayer was unbelievably fun. Yeah, you have the standard deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and all that stuff, but just with one more pretty important addition - you could turn into fucking jets and shit.

@MooseyMcMan: The bigger thing is that this obviously no longer takes place in the G1 universe. In G1, Wheeljack created the dinobots on earth after watching a documentary about dinosaurs. Honestly, though, I couldn't care less about continuity since the first game rocked.

As for whether Transformers have souls, they kind of do. Beast Wars established the idea of Transformers having Sparks. It's pretty much the equivalent of a soul as it's what makes them each unique and it leaves their body when they die.

I'm going to patiently ignore anyone who's commenting with a reference to Beast Wars. Much like I tried to erase that show's existence from my memory years ago.

This game could be pretty neat though, I enjoyed War for Cybertron more than I expected to.

Also, hey, I guess there's one surprise I can expect when I eventually get around to watching The Wire.

Considering that Bumblebee is practically a franchise unto himself these days... yeah, he's not dying on that cover.

One of the best Alex articles I've ever read.

Having never played any of these games (and having only seen the first movie), I don't know if I will suddenly decide to pick this up, but I'll read the GI article and pretend I'm 10 again watching the cartoon on television.

War For Cybertron was the best Transformer game ever made. 3 player co-op through the campaigns were really fun, and making your own transformer in Multiplayer was cool, too. So I have hopes for this one.

Beat Wars: Transformers > Transformers cartoon

Dinobot terrorise!

Dinobot maximise!

Robots turning into animals and dinosaurs are over 9000 times cooler than robots turning into stupid cars.

Being a 90's kid, Beast Wars was a part of my childhood. So robots that turn into dinosaurs isn't silly, but freaking awesome. And, frankly, I think the 90s cartoon was much better than the cheese and lame 80's Transformer cartoon that the Giant Bomb staffers seem to hold so close to their hearts despite being so bad of a show.

Loved the first game.. it was pretty much a standard third person shooter, but it just worked so well, and I really loved the updated G1 style. It's really the only version of Transformers I care about.

The first game was one of my favorite games of the year. I still play online about once a week. Im super excited to see them returning to G1 style instead of going with Beast Wars or any of the other garbage they churned out since.

FFS please bring the DLC to PC this time and use an anti cheat system for online.

Okay someone's going to have to explain the Rickey Henderson reference to me.

For the record I enjoy both G1 and Beast Wars, although Beast Wars is more watchable. But what I like about Beast Wars are the parts that build off G1. I mean it would be like if a DC character suddenly lost all their history and myth they were built on, they wouldn't be as entertaining.

I'm also laughing to myself at all the Beast Wars fans who see Grimlok and think Dinobot. I'd be alright with either character appearing but I am a bit more of a Grimlok fan than Dinobot. In the end we probably won't get a crazy emotional rollercoaster for a transformer game, which Dinobot would be suited for. What we're going to get is robots blowing things up and maybe some of the larger ones showing up with bits of story thrown in. And while Dinobot does fine with drama, Grimlok's the crazy ass rebelious war leader that will be fun. Especially if he gets a crown.

I'm going to agree with you that Beast Wars was better, mostly because that series had a good story that got darker and grittier as it went on, which is also why I liked Reboot so much. Though I think robots turning into other machines makes more sense.

Haven't seen anything from this game, but I wasn't at all impressed with War for Cybertron and this year's movie tie-in, Dark of the Moon, was also made by High Moon. So the combination of the two facts, one being that I didn't really like the predecessor and that they will have had only a year to make this, makes me not really excited for this game.

SO FREAKING EXCITED. War For Cybertron was awesome, and I think the darker nature is going to come from the fact that cybertron is almost a dead planet because of what happened in the first game.

Wow, really excited for this.

These line of games don't appear to have much to do with the recent movies and more to do with the relatively recent comics line and built up mythology of the G1 Transformers. Definitely not the character design anyways.

The CG definitely doesn't hold up, but frankly neither does the 80's cartoon with it's wildly erratic animation, and I'd say Beast Wars storyline hold's up a lot more to scrutiny. The main sticking point for most that hold the opinion Beast Wars was an inferior product being the animal thing.

Beast Wars is the superior Transformers series.

clearly. dinosaurs are better than cars and jets and stuff. especially when they started turning into freakish jet/car/dinosaur monstrosity things in beast wars.

(speech this)

Beast Wars is one of the only Transformer related things thats not dumb as hell and it has plenty of dudes turning into dinos. I get Alex thinking "boy oh boy they took it to the next level of stupid", problem is Transformers is an intrinsically silly concept so there is no taking it too far. Oh, the show about robots turning into trucks suddenly got silly?
