Treyarch Says You Should Think Twice Before You Glitch In Black Ops

Treyarch's multiplayer director bristles when discussing how the studio will treat glitchers and exploiters.

Call of Duty, if you didn't know, is popular. So is  Call of Duty: Black Ops. Last night, 2.9 million dudes (and dudettes) were online in the Xbox 360 version alone. With this kind of massive draw, it's no surprise that some glitches and exploits have been discovered and reported. And while developer Treyarch could simply opt to ride the wave of these initial reports before speaking to these discoveries, it isn't. On the game's official message board, multiplayer director David Vonderhaar has been saying some headline-worthy words of warning to those who are currently abusing the game and its systems.

"What many of these people want is to be Internet nerd famous," Vonderhaar wrote, according to 1UP. "I'm not going to make them famous and you shouldn't either ... "

"Given the opportunity, I'd personally wield the ban hammer for anyone who thinks he is clever by abusing any glitches. Good thing I don't have the opportunity that often and we actually have a constructive, measured, and well-managed live ops team," he said.

No Caption Provided

"We said we would support the game. We are going to support it," Vonderhaar continued. "We are disinterested in making mini-celebrities out of douche-bags. You better think twice before you glitch. You never know who in your game doesn't like glitchers who reports you and saves the game in their File Share and tells us about it."

Wow. Hey, guys, don't cheat in Black Ops. If you do, Vonderhaar sounds like he's on the verge of paying you a personal visit of the least pleasant variety. But, in all seriousness, you might want to keep it clean. It sounds like Treyarch has its hands over the Ban Button. Plus, you don't want to be that guy. You know, the guy that launches himself at another person just to blow himself up with a Javelin? That guy.

Great to hear.  The video system from halo seems to be very useful in deterring a HUGE problem from MW2.  Also, just the way he phrased it, avoiding formal speak and calling out douche bags, is just hilarious.

This is a Blizzard style threat, one you can only make when you're King Shit.  One less fucker, or even ten thousand less fuckers, is a drop in the ocean of Call of Duty.

I really think that is a cool side effect of systems to record data to watch matches and stuff over again that was added. You can use it as evidence of problems. Trying to describe some glitches or describe how to do them can be confusing, just flat out going hey take 20 seconds and watch this and you are done is a whole different ballgame. Glad to see they want to be all over this though.

It's funny how he declined comment on the issues plaguing the PC version because he was "out of the office on a business trip" but found time for e-dick waving. Get your shit together Treyarch.

You won't be fucking laughing when you wake up in a basement with a cue ball in your mouth. Or get banned for 30 days. Either way, it's pretty life changing.

isn't banning up to microsoft?  Or Sony?  Also, while I hate people who use glitches, is that against the terms of use on xbox live?  Your not manipulating or changing the code or hardware....

Is it just me or does it sound like Vonderhaar is a 14-year-old girl?  "The game's not broken!  You're broken!"  It's almost like he doesn't understand that glitching - unlike hacking - is something that it is the developer's responsibility to patch out.  Not to call it's consumer base "douche-bags" and make threats like a middle-schooler suddenly becoming aware that his macaroni art "painting" of an elephant looks all-too-much like a penis to his friends.

Stupid. Ban people because they exploit a glitch? How about you fix your shit instead of banning people. Players make videos to show people how to do it so that the devs get off their asses and fix it. If only a handful of people know about it, then who cares.

I wouldn't like people making videos of how my product wasn't up to par either, but I wouldn't say "oh you paid for it and found a bug? Well I'm not gonna let you play it anymore." Customers are doing your job for you, assbag.  Be thankful they are making it public and there isn't just a group of dickheads out there keeping it to themselves and ruining it for everyone without telling anybody.

Games being released glitchy are becoming an epidemic and the ridiculous "oh we'll fix it after launch" mentality that companies have nowadays is bullshit. How about I pay you half of the $70 now and half when the game is working properly? Don't like that idea? Well I don't like paying full price for a game I can't play properly because you didn't QA it well enough.

Excellent. I'm glad to see that we're unlikely to have a repeat of the extreme sort of situation that the Javelin glitch promoted during Modern Warfare 2's release last year. The game was effectively unplayable with all of the assholes running around and doing their part to break the game. And I didn't really think of the utilizing the file-sharing system as a means to oust cheaters. It seems like a no-brainer now.

Oh quit riding them, ALL games have bugs.  It's not an epedimic, it's how it's always been.  I remember when I was 10 being able to make 99 Rare candies to level up my Bulbsaur by fighting Missingno.  They are going to fix it, and this, admittedly awesome message, is to tell people not to cheat.

If you find a glitch, you can just email it to them, instead of posting it on Youtube.

If Treyarch can wield the banhammer more effectively than Infinity Ward, they will have earned my respect as a developer. The Javelin Glitch ruined MW2's online for almost a week before it was fixed.

I'm so happy they are making this clear to everybody since glitchers don't usually think they are "cheating"

It almost seems stupid to even try considering every move they just made in the match they just played is accessible by everyone they just played with.

I think actual glitches is something developers/publishers should be blamed for, but I don't think it's unreasonable to also blame players (not entirely, but a bit at least) for exploiting these glitches. I don't think they should be banned for it, but I don't think people who are upset at them for using these glitches that break the competitive spirit of the game are wrong.

However, what is totally unacceptable is ANYone from Treyarch or Activision make ANY statement about ANYthing pertaining to players exploiting their mess while the game on PS3 and PC is a complete fucking disaster. Not "not quite as good as the 360" or the same-old exploits, but games being dropped, lockups, freezes, framerate issues, launch issues, crashes, blahblahblah.

What a joke. "You guys better not 'cheat'." Oh, don't worry, I won't... because I can barely play this broken game as is.

Srsly, what a fucking tool.  All this made me think twice about is buying their shitty, glitch-ridden game.

I don't think thats what he's saying to be honest, he said they were supporting the game, that kinda implies fixing it where needed. To me it just sounds like people who abuse glitches they find will be punished and i have zero problem with that.
Those people are douchebags. I'd much rather hear this from a dev then zero comment or a 'meh' when asked about it.

hacking is one thing, but playing the code they put out there in a non-standard way should not be a ban-able offense.  It's the game.  As is.  Release good code next time douchebag.

See, right there, you italicized ruined, when in reality the important words in that sentence are "almost a week" and "was fixed".

The Javelin is the fastest I have ever seen Microsoft and a publisher collectively haul ass and present a unified front that says they don't much care for users pulling this shit. Lots of people were banned in spite of a big chunk of community arguing that glitchers aren't cheaters.  If they had rushed out a broken patch in under 48 hours, we'd be complaining about that.

Something in a game gets exploited, and then it normally gets patched soon thereafter.  I don't know why gamers in particular insist on suffering through those events.  It's like during a power outage these folks are cranking a generator to get in a couple more hours, then go off screaming at the power company for interrupting their day.  Fuck it, just go and do something else with your time until it gets sorted out.  Or better yet, play with people you know.
