Twisted Pixel Announces Ms. Splosion Man

Due out in Fall 2011!

The next game from indie developer Twisted Pixel Games is a "sequel" to 2009's Xbox Live Arcade success Splosion Man. Its name? Ms. Splosion Man.  What? You expected Splosion Man 2 or something?

Actually, the fact that Ms. Splosion Man isn't named "Splosion Man 2" is pretty important to Twisted Pixel. According to studio COO Josh Bear, Twisted Pixel isn't interested in making sequels unless the sequel provides the studio with the opportunity to improve and add to the original game. Ms. Splosion Man, a completely new character and also game, is a representation of this ideal.

"We have never wanted to make a sequel to one of our games unless we thought it made sense, that we could add more to it and actually make a better game," Bear told Joystiq. "I think with Splosion Man a follow-up was something we really wanted to do, and that is why you never saw DLC for that game.

"We could have churned out new levels, but we wouldn't have had the time to add in new gameplay puzzles or cool new character stuff. But we didn't just want to do Splosion Man 2, it had to be something a little more interesting."

== TEASER ==Unfortunately, there's not much more we can share with you. The press release, which does a fair amount of joking only has one more detail: Ms. Splosion Man is due out in Fall 2011.

Here's that press release, by the way.

AUSTIN, TX – December 2, 2010 – Twisted Pixel Games was pleased to announce today that their subsidiary, Big Science, has captured the Splosion Man and guaranteed the safety of all humankind. Many remember the terrifying events of July 2009: Splosion Man's horrifying rampage through Big Science laboratories that meated hundreds of scientists and caused untold damage to their underground laboratories. Eye witnesses reported widespread destruction and a staggering number of t-bones and fillets left in his wake.

Today that ends, with Twisted Pixel releasing footage of the successful capture of the renegade experiment. The scientists speak with new-found confidence about their success. Says Dr. Wilson, "Even if some sort of newer, stronger, better threat were created, our newest security measures and fiendish traps would be more than enough to contain it. We've made incredible advances in our technology over this past year.... Not that there would ever be a use for any of it."

Dr. Henry was quick to add, "Our lab, our equipment - everything has had functionality improvements and visual overhauls, and our company has expanded to some incredible new locations. It's all pristine and beautiful - decadent environments that we are very happy no experiment gone wrong will ever rampage through." Dr. Henry paused briefly before continuing, "I don't even know why I'm mentioning that, because it's 100% guaranteed that Splosion Man will never be a threat to us again."

When asked if there was any risk of overconfidence amongst the scientists, Dr. Riley was quick to interject. "Why? What's going to happen, some sort of freak accident in the after party that creates a "Ms. Splosion Man" mere seconds after Splosion Man's capture? And then the Ms. Splosion Man goes on some monster tear in the fall of 2011? Yeah right. Not very likely."

Twisted Pixel Games reiterates that despite the fact that nothing could possibly go wrong during today's events, should any newsworthy event occur, they will release as much information as possible in the coming months.

I can see a Space Channel 5 kind of game from this, I hope it's something different and not just a faster sexualized Splosion Man.

The developer has proven that while they have an overwhelming amount of talent and ideas, they aren't exactly great at making fun games.  The games' enjoyment has come from the presentation and humor, not from the actual gameplay.  Splosion Man had some crazy challenge to it later on, but the best parts of that game was the ending - something few saw outside of youtube - and the donut song.

The Maw was actually their best game so far in terms of a game being fun and engaging, it also had the least amount of crazy in it.  So they either need to reel in the craziness and focus on making a fun game, or stop making games and just start a sketch comedy show.

Adding a female character to a game makes it "sexualized"? News to me.

"We have never wanted to make a sequel to one of our games unless we thought it made sense, that we could add more to it and actually make a better game,"

Add more to it? You mean like with DLC?

"I think with Splosion Man a follow-up was something we really wanted to do, and that is why you never saw DLC for that game."

Oh, so it's not that DLC didn't make sense; you just wanted to add another title to your catalog.

"We could have churned out new levels, but we wouldn't have had the time to add in new gameplay puzzles or cool new character stuff."

Actually, you'd have had plenty of time if you weren't making a full follow-up. Or are we pointing fingers at the publisher's desire for more money?

"But we didn't just want to do Splosion Man 2, it had to be something a little more interesting."

I see. "Ms." must be the new "2".

To all the "it should be splosion woman" people think of it this way:

Female Human not "Huwoman"
Female Pacman not "Pacwoman"
Female Splosion man not "Splosion woman"

Just a little food for thought.

Oh man, this makes up for Comic Jumper's gameplay. I hope it's even more ridiculous than the first.

@NobleJon:   There's only so much they can do with DLC, which would only have a small team devoted to handling and that certainly wouldn't get the same kind of publicity or sales as a new game would.  Are you going to criticize a company for..  wanting to make money?

They've also said they are working on other projects, which are both very likely completely new IP's.  Why would you complain so much about a small indie developer doing this but not someone like Activision with Call of Duty, etc. who repeatedly rip us off for everything.

Really hope they bring this one to PSN/Steam. Still haven't played the original because it's XBLA exclusive.

@WinterSnowblind: I really didn't like Splosion Man and find the concept of a full blown non-sequel to be a waste of time and talent. I'm interested to see what other IP's they can churn out. That's what I'm after. I'd prefer it if they made this an episodic expansion, in support of Splosion Man fans, and used there other efforts to make something else, in support of their other fans.

'Splosion Man was one of the best surprises of 2009. I hope they can retain the charm and whimsy in this one.

You realize that that's basically exactly what the dude from Twisted Pixel said, right?

@Deusoma: Haha, not exactly. They're deliberately similar, as I'm offering my opinion on what he said, and almost nothing else. I admit, I was nitpicking, and "waste of time" was harsh. I'd blame illness, but my delivery doesn't change much even on good days.

I am not excited by this announcement, but I'm not going to do anything more about it than vent. And I might some day buy MSM, if it ends up being good and on sale.

Nice Cacodemon plushy, btw.

I dunno, 'Splosion Man was pretty infuriating, despite Twisted Pixel's charms.
However, I do quite enjoy their style, and will definitely follow the game.

I and others agree with this statement.  Even if the character is a clear riff on the Ms. Pac Man idea it might be less offensive to a female audience, especially a geek female audience to have the name include the word Woman.

PS:  I also note that Splosion Man is already a brand label but I'm sure we'll get the reference.

Couldn't be more on board with this unless I was twisting the pixels myself. Original was great, addictive fun, and even though I got distracted by other shiney new games I plan to play again someday...unless this comes out first then I'll likely just get this newer shineyer sexier Splosion Man....err....Splosion Woman.

Their funny and hyper games genuinely seem designed to make gamers happy so they have already earned my bucks. Also, let me add the press release is genius. More like that from other companies, would be a welcome aside to the real game coming out over a year later (Looking at you Bioshock Infinite, I don't need to see you two years before you come  out, it's just torture unless you give me some ARC or something to look forward to enjoying NOWish)
