Ubisoft Delays Rayman Legends to September, Adds PS3 and Xbox 360 Versions

So not only is the game no longer a Wii U exclusive, but it's been delayed to coincide with the other versions just announced. Ouch.

Sigh. Someday I'll get to play you.

Rayman Legends has long existed as one of the few bright, shiny third-party exclusives Nintendo's been trumpeting since the Wii U first had games to show. By all accounts, Ubisoft was fully on board with the idea of Rayman as a Wii U exclusive, talking up all the nifty multiplayer things that could be done only on the Wii U's GamePad as it promoted the game.

So, I guess we're taking all that exclusivity pillow talk back now, because Rayman Legends is no longer a Wii U exclusive. Ubisoft today announced that Legends has been expanded to also include Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

"We heard from many Xbox & PlayStation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system," said Ubisoft's Geoffroy Sardin, in the announcement press release. "We decided to give the fans what they wanted while at the same time broadening the audience exposed to this innovative and memorable game."

All that's well and good, except for the part where the game is also delayed. Originally, Legends was slated to release at the end of this month. Instead, the Wii U version has been pushed to September, where it will launch alongside the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

Without reading too much into this announcement, it's hard to picture a version of this scenario that isn't a bit of an indictment of the Wii U's current strength at retail. If Ubisoft really believed Legends would succeed on its own as a Wii U title, it wouldn't be doing this. You don't delay a game six months and add two aging console ports because you're expecting a game to do really well on that originally announced platform.

Regardless, every time I've had my hands on Rayman Legends, it's looked and played fantastically. So if this means more people have the ability to play it, then I can't see much fault with that. Still, I had been planning on grabbing a Wii U prior to Rayman's originally planned launch this month. Now? Uh...I don't know. Maybe when Pikmin 3 comes out, I guess.

Ahhhh!

Finally, its is mine.

Looks like Ubisoft actually wants people to play this game! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

So this is the second Wii U exclusive in two days that is no longer a Wii U exclusive (Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge being the other one)? Alright...

jeez- this is kinda crazy.

oh man, sick BURN

Very good move.

Fantastic, now I can continue to have zero interest in a WiiU

LOL WiiU

Posted by joshthebear

Considering the install base of 360/PS3, it's a no brainer.

Posted by Linkster7

I remember when this game was gonna come out in the EU in 2012, now I'm just kinda sad.

Posted by RE_Player1

One more reason not to get a Wii U. Still amazed at all the people back when it was announced were convinced this would remain exclusive. Origins was a multiplatform seller, leaving it's sequel on Wii U would only hurt sales.

Posted by sixpin

Wow the game that sold me on Wii U I will now be buying for 360. The September thing is a bummer though.

Posted by Happenstance

Yeah its great for PS3 or 360 owners but I was looking forward to playing the bloody game in a couple of weeks!

Everybody's favorite WiiU launch title.

Posted by Imsorrymsjackson

That's pretty cool, now at least everyone gets to play it. As someone who owns all the consoles, I don't care what comes out on what, im just happy for everyone to get the chance to play good titles on whatever system they own.

Posted by Castiel

Well the good thing is that more people gets to play it.

But on the other hand I just can't help feeling a little bad for Nintendo. It was after all one of their big third party exclusives but now they lost that too.

Posted by Abendlaender

That is definitely a nail in the WiiU's already boarded up coffin

I said it in the other thread and I'll say it in this one too:
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

I feel worse for anyone who used this game's exclusivity in their decision to buy a WiiU.

I'm curious if this is this an isolated case, or a sign of things to come third-party-wise for Nintendo.

Now all that is needed next is Bayonetta 2 to somehow come out on other things.

Alright, now do PC...

Posted by joshth

Man... I just feel kind of bad for Nintendo. This is a weird feeling.

Posted by Master_Funk

Not a good sign for the WiiU .

Posted by therealminime

I'm pretty happy about this. Now I don't have to get a WiiU. Sorry Nintendo.

Reminds me of the SFxT locked DLC characters, in that "Hey, instead of releasing this thing right now because it's done on this platform, we're going to delay all versions by 6 months until we're ready to release on all platforms." It makes business sense to have a unified launch, but it sucks for anyone who was looking forward to playing the game later this month and the WiiU version is (presumably) ready to be printed but won't be.

exactly, with this and ninja gaiden 3 razors edge coming to other consoles, the reasons to buy a wiiu are dwindling

Platinum Games is the hero Wii U needs right now.

Posted by BlatantNinja23

Great that more people get to play this. The real question is why the delay? If they still need to work on it and to justify the constant delays ubisoft asked to make go multi than great, but if the Wii U version is done and they just want to launch it alongside these ports than fuuuuuuuck that.

Posted by StriderNo9

Oh man, so they lost an exclusive before it was even released. I wish they had more faith in the Wii U but I can't blame them at the moment.

Posted by MocBucket62

Happy that PS3 and 360 owners can play this, but man, Nintendo is feeling sore. Sucks for the Big N.

Boyonetta

Wouldn't that be Devil May Cry?
Posted by Klei

No big deal. Just weird that we already have a Wii U Demo for a game releasing in... seven months.

Posted by MariachiMacabre

Still probably going to buy it for Wii U. It was the game I was going to buy the system for anyway but it also seems like some of the co-op functionality might be better on the Wii U. Specifically the rhythm stuff.

Posted by ttocs

One more reason not to purchase a WiiU. Or or on the flipside, one of my reasons to buy a WiiU is gone now.

Posted by Shaunage

I want my fucking money back.

Posted by towolie

to everyone who's saying the wii u will fail. well the same was said about the wii and the ps3 ( don't know about the xbox 360 ) and they did fine in the end.

i predict the same will have with the wii u, it takes time to get the same player base that 8(?) year old consoles have.

on topic, maybe the time has come to finally end with all the silly exclusives. AND WHY NO PC VERSION! if ubisoft is telling the truth than why not do a pc version???

Posted by Benmo316

Are you....? Fuuuuu... I was looking forward to this game and more looking forward to buying something on my Wii U. This is a dick move by Ubisoft.

Posted by Meepasaurus

Oh crap, that is really harsh. I don't mind it not being an exclusive, but to delay it again for half a year when it was a very highly anticipated "launch" title is pretty ridiculous.

Posted by WarrenMSP

I could care less about it losing exclusivity, but my ENTIRE FAMILY was hyped for this game at the end of the month. I just preordered it last night! I sold my Mario game so I could buy this because the family didn't even want to play it, but we ate the Legends demo alive. Ugh...so disappointing.

Posted by Jace

Boy, the wii u sure is doing well.

Posted by laserbolts

So 1 of the 2 reasons to get a WiiU has been erased. Damn. At least they still have Zelda.

Posted by Chibi_Kaji

I'm not annoyed about this going multiplatform... But I'm not happy that I'll have to wait until September because of this.

Posted by joeshabadoo

the console space is getting more and more fucked. eat shit, ubisoft. porting is fine, but delaying a finished game 7 months?

eat shit and die

Edited by Tonch

As much as I'm really glad that more people can play it now (I never understood why it was WiiU exclusive in the first place), it's a titanic bummer that it got delayed from the end of this month all the way until SEPTEMBER.

Posted by Gordo789

This is some hot bullshit.

Posted by Daveyo520

@ProfessorEss: Both the same to me but there are some people I know that just got thew Wii U for Bayonetta 2 for some reason. I guess the only thing that I would want to play is a Zelda game but that won't go on other consoles unless say the Wii U fails and they have to make games for other consoles. We can only hope.

Edited by DriftSPace

I called this months ago, and plenty of you responded saying I was wrong.

Anyhow, the thing that sucks about this for me personally is that it may be one less title I purchase for Wii U; I wasn't stoked on the GamePad mechanics, and trophies for a game like this are hard to pass-up.

This game was one of the reasons I bought a Wii U.

Posted by beard_of_zeus

I feel sorry for the people who picked up a Wii U to play this; this was actually going to be one of my reasons to get one. Same thing happened with that port of Ninja Gaiden 3. On the other hand, there are still things on the horizon that are going to make me pick up a Wii U anyways (see: Pikmin 3, new Xenoblade), so overall, it kinda sucks that it's getting pushed so far back. Glad more people overall will get to experience it, I'm still hyped.

Posted by granderojo

I didn't find Origins to be all that. There are so many good platformers out there and it did nothing special really other than the art, which wasn't all that.

I hate video games now.
