Ubisoft Ditching Its Intrusive DRM For PC Games

Company finally responds to endless condemnation of its DRM policies.

Assassin's Creed III will be one of the first new games to benefit from Ubisoft's new DRM policy.
Assassin's Creed III will be one of the first new games to benefit from Ubisoft's new DRM policy.

After years of deserved criticism and endless threads on Reddit, Ubisoft is finally backing off its DRM policies for PC games, according to an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun.

“We have listened to feedback,” said Ubisoft worldwide director for online games Stephanie Perottiand, ”and since June last year our policy for all of PC games is that we only require a one-time online activation when you first install the game, and from then you are free to play the game offline.”

When Assassin’s Creed III comes out later this year, it won’t require an always-on connection to play single-player. That changes for multiplayer, obviously, but that’s never been the source of angst for players. When Ubisoft’s servers have gone down, preventing players from continuing their single-player experiences is when the ire has been greatest.

Ubisoft prompted some eyebrow raises from the world when CEO Yves Guillemot told GamesIndustry.Biz that the company was noticing a 93-to-95% piracy rate. It didn’t provide much evidence for those statistics.

"It's a way to get closer to your customers, to make sure you have a revenue,” said Guillemot. “On PC it's only around five-to-seven percent of the players who pay for F2P, but normally on PC it's only about five to seven per cent who pay anyway, the rest is pirated. It's around a 93-95 percent piracy rate, so it ends up at about the same percentage. The revenue we get from the people who play is more long term, so we can continue to bring content."

When pressed Ubisoft for more details about Guillemot’s statistics, I didn’t get much in response.

“That was an internal estimate for a few of Ubisoft’s popular PC titles like Assassin’s Creed and Driver, based on our own measurements,” the company told me a few weeks back. “It’s similar to broader external estimates from groups like the UKIE [Association for UK Interactive Entertainment], and to some recent examples of popular PC games from other companies.”

Better late than never, I suppose.

Bet that when there game is released and they still get hate from some people (either for other reasons or because they didn't know they removed the DRM), Ubisoft will then complain about the continued negative response (and/or the 'low' sales of AC3 on PC regardless of the sales due to the quality of the game or if their expectations are too high) and say that DRM is needed because it is a suitable evil and that they didn't get the good response that they were told for so long that they would get. Then Ubisoft would go back to DRM (and probably convince other developers/publishers to go back to DRM).

That said, I am glad this has happened. And I will give Ubisoft some real props if they manage to keep from going back to DRM for a year (don't let me down Ubi).

I think the headline of this story is misleading. Maybe "Ubisoft, A Company Known For Lying About DRM, Claims To Be Done With It"

Too little, too late. Bad DRM wasn't their only PR misstep and they still have a long way to go before they ever see a penny from me.

Man, what a great interview the RPS guys ran. They really just absolutely bent them over a barrel. Good on them, there's way too much PR tiptoeing in the industry, and I honestly think that really upfront interviews like this one help push consumer issues up the food chain in a way that people whining on forums never can. Fucking A man.

Finally they got it. Very late but they got it.

I didn't play any Ubisoft title since several years so I can't judge from my personal experience, but the people who bought from them in the last years said that DRM was nasty for real, so good riddance, but as I've said, it's a little too late, but better later than ever, don't you think?

Now all they need to do is stop releasing half assed ports with no settings, barely any steam support, shitty controls and bloated prices and I might just consider undertaking the task of once again buying Ubisoft products on PC.

I'm confused; according to the statement, it's been 14 months since they published a game with always-on DRM? Am I missing something, or at no point in the quote does it say they are deciding to stop using that just recently?

Didn't a story recently say that 95% of ubisoft's PC games are pirated? So this is good news for the other 5%? :P

Are we sure that most of that 93-95% didn't buy the game and then torrent it to circumvent the DRM?

As a PC gamer, I refused to pick up their games. I finally got a 360 when I came back to the states, and I'm currently loving the Assassin's Creed series. Maybe now I can play them in better detail on my PC.

I have honestly no idea why they decided to shoot themselves in the foot like this, or why they stuck so hard to their guns and highly suspicious percentages.

93% to 95 figure I think is derived from a generalized parameters that applies worldwide. There are regions in which piracy is so prevalent as to be acceptable to be out in the open retail channels being peddled wantonly, no restrictions whatsoever. Also I think that it is calculated from the sales potential that takes into account the general MSRP, and the various sales and promotions that do not fully reflect the full price will generally skew the figure toward their favor.

The more transient point is that Ubisoft will now consider free to play option almost exclusively for PC. More segmented and extensive DLCs and F2P are the way of the future for PC titles, in addition to always online.

And the community was so pleased that Ubisoft reduced the restrictive anti-piracy measures, that they made numerous posts stating their enthusiasm, and then pirated the game in half the time it took them before.

Yeah, that tripped me up too. The RPS interview is more clear. The always-on DRM had been scrapped 14 months ago according to Ubisoft, but only now is it being "officially announced."

Dear Patrick "Tricky" Klepek.

Might want to change one of the lines in the story. I feel like it doesn't really make sense the way it is formulated at the time. It's a super minor flaw, but the sentence makes no sense without it.

"When pressed Ubisoft for more details about Guillemot’s statistics, I didn’t get much in response."

It should say "When I pressed". As it stands, it kinda sounds like you were being pressed for details. Oh what a difference an "I" can make.

@Elow said:

That interview on Rock Paper Shotgun really is fantastic. John Walker is both aggressive and persistent in his questioning about the DRM.

Why don't you ask questions this way Patrick? I have no doubt you would bring up a DRM question in a similar interview, but would never go at it this viciously (or passionately?).

That RPS interview is fantastic. The typical PR non-answers make me doubt that Ubi actually cares or is likely to change they way they do business.

Awesome. Assassin's Creed 3, Far Cry 3: Here I come

It's weird how Ubisoft on the one hand is one of the few publishers who developes/publishes high-quality PC-only games (Anno, Settlers, HOM&M, Silent Hunter, Trackmania) and on the other hand does everything to annoy PC gamers (their DRM, their policy of releasing PC games weeks after the console launch etc.)

93% of people pirate? Where are they getting that from? Seems like a stupid number to me because There are plenty of PC games that sell millions. Why don't theirs? Well probably because they aren't aimed at the platform.......

I bet Project Zomboid is more popular or even mods like Goldeneye Source, I even bet more people have played SWGEmu than say Ass Creed 2 on PC.

You games aren't aimed at the PC and you always release them months after the console launch, by then people have forgotten about them and don't care.

At least the people that cried "DRM is why I don't buy ANYTHING from UBISOFT!"

I know that I will. The only Ubisoft PC game I own is Assassin's Creed 1, and that's because I was able to get it on GOG.com...DRM-free. This gives me incentive to actually pick up AC3 on PC now.

What about their backlog of games that DID use this intrusive and nasty form of DRM? Are they going to be reverse engineering that shit out of the releases? If so, I'll be on an Ubisoft PC game buying spree.
