Ubisoft Maybe Thinking About Possibly Making a Rayman: Origins Sequel, Perhaps

Marketing survey features rather specific details regarding a potential sequel for the critically acclaimed platformer.

Rayman: Origins seemed a game doomed to fail at retail. No matter how much critics piled praise upon it (this one included), its $60 price tag and amiable, if not flashy gameplay just couldn't find a way to stand out amid the November retail rush. Still, Ubisoft reportedly did make some money on the game, which is great for those hoping Ubisoft might continue the series some day via some manner of sequel.

An image from the survey in question.
An image from the survey in question.

"Some day" seems perhaps a bit sooner off following this morning's Kotaku report that shows what is purportedly an official marketing survey from Ubisoft-contracted firm Arkenford. The survey images sent Kotaku's way show a few pieces of early art from the supposed sequel, as well as the claim that the new game will feature all of the same basic gameplay tenets of the first (co-op gameplay, a lengthy campaign, etc.) in a world filled with "castles, vampires, ghosts, Greek Gods, or dragons."

As with all marketing surveys, there's a goodly chance that this is all speculative and not terribly accurate, but the specificity of this one coupled with Ubisoft's assertion that Rayman actually was at least a little bit profitable, gives me more hope than usual. Considering how often tremendous disappointment wins out over true happiness in this industry, I am extremely careful about where I lay my hopes and dreams. Don't make me cry, Ubisoft. You wouldn't like me when I cry.

They probably wouldn't since they invested a bunch of money (and French taxpayer money =*( ) into the UbiArt platform. I imagine that they'll be using that for any 2D games going forward, which would have a lot of shared elements.

I don't care if it's $60, I'll pre-order a sequel the second it's announced, the first one was that damn good.

Well, if they make a 20-30 dollar downloadable sequel that cuts out some of the superfluous (read: first half of the game) levels.. I´m on board.

But who am I kidding, this is UbiSoft! They will surely launch it on the same day a new CoD comes out, charge 60 dollars for it and make it a Wii exclusive title and ship it only to select GameStops.

Couldn't agree more.. just got the platinum this weekend after skipping it on consoles. It's a game I'd rather play on a mobile device (so long as there are buttons).

$60 seems like a lot for a platformer when I can get Super Mario games on the 3DS for $40, or a bunch of good, challenging platformers on PSN/XBLA/Steam for $15.

Just my two cents.

Put the first one on XBLA so I can buy it! It was a great game, but I think a boxed release was a bad idea.

I will buy it if they do that.

wow there, he didn´t even reply to me as far as I can see. How about you stop messing with the quotes?

Anyway, I liked Rayman Origins, but the second half of the game was waaaay better. Those first couple of worlds just go on for too long and are too easy. Once you beat that middle boss thing and the game opens up the other worlds, things get a lot better. At least in my opinion.

A platformer doesn´t need a hundred levels to be great. If they make like 20 awesome ones I´ll be fine!

Have you played Rayman Origins? The amount of joy and depth that came from that game in terms of art style and game-play were down-right criminal that it didn't get the exposure it deserved. We all know it was from bad timing, but still, it's heart-breaking.

Origins is about $20-30 new wherever you go. You guys should probably get it if you found $60 too steep.

The main portion of 3D land on 3DS is half as long as Rayman, so hey by that logic it should make up for the $60 price tag.

...wait what? It's not even $60 anymore, it's like $20 or 30 at the absolutely max. You shouldn't be comparing it at that price.

It was $60 on consoles? I can see how that'd turn off many people. I got the PC version at $30, which seemed more appropriate.

I really loved the game until the last world, at which point it got too hard and stopped being fun. I was looking for an entertaining, colorful platformer - and it was exactly that for 80% of the game. Then it became a punishing Super Meat Boy style twitch fest that permits no mistakes and I really don't know what they were thinking. If they want to do that for the bonus levels, ok fine, but way to turn off more casual players with that last stretch of the game. I persevered and ended up beating it, but came away nearly being soured on the game and forgetting all the fun I had before that point.

@langdonx: For sure -- I find platformers in general are a perfect fit for (actual) handhelds. It's a genre I prefer on a smaller, crazy-gorgeous screen, intimately close, with a button layout that reminds me of SNES.

But I'm biased. I want everything on Vita.

All i was saying is i would like some new gameplay added to what they already made, if they just want to make some new levels why not call it dlc and sell it for 15 dollars instead of 15.

I'm sure new stuff will be added and hopefully michelle is going to be lead on this project aswell.

Me too! It's hard to find the time to sit in front of a proper TV/Console or Monitor/PC now that I have kids. Having my Vita in my pocket is great for those times when they're watching a show or actively playing together in the play room.

ETA: And gaming on my Android is just not satisfying.
