Ubisoft Responds to Assassin's Creed III Leaks by Just Up and Revealing its Cover Art [UPDATED]

After everybody already pretty much leaked the setting and protagonist of the publisher's latest time-travelling murder simulator, Ubisoft just reveals it all official like.

No Caption Provided

As you can see from the image on the side here, Assassin's Creed III's box art has officially been released by Ubisoft, and it confirms what everyone on the Internet has been buzzing about for the last couple of days: the lead character is of Native American descent, and the game takes place during the American Revolution.

All sorts of different art leaks had been popping up over the last day or two, some via a Best Buy employee posting promotional art sent to the store in anticipation of the reveal, and another via Game Informer's website (snagged by a NeoGAF user), which inadvertently posted a banner showing a new assassin holding a tomahawk and old-timey pistol against the backdrop of Washington crossing the Delaware.

And now we have confirmation of all of that. The lead character will be (at least partly) of Native American descent, and will be stabbing/shooting dudes against the backdrop of America's fight for independence. It's not that I hate the British or anything, but frankly, I'm quite looking forward to the notion of dropping a few tomahawks on a few Redcoat skulls. It'll be just like the movie The Patriot! Except with time travel. And without Mel Gibson. And maybe not horrible.

UPDATE: Game Informer just revealed their dual covers for their upcoming Assassin's Creed III cover story, which you can see and then begin picking apart for obscure details below.

After Revelations, I was kinda expecting it would be Desmond running around the last Vault, while flashing back to that weird First Civilization before the first Cataclysm. Japan made no sense whatsoever (unless he had a Japanese grandparent or something, who ALSO decended from Assassins), and London etc. would feel too close to Renaissance Italy/

A full-fledged modern Assassin's Creed just seemed too unrealistic. Creating this huge urban city that's almost completely climbable, filled with AI, filled with cars, and filled with interactive placements in the environment? The asset creation ALONE sounded completely unfeasible..

Storywise, this has great potential. Think of the dirty politics they can go nuts with?!

But the people who are voicing their concerns over city traversal have a point: there weren't really any huge buildings in most any of the US at this point. Boston, Philly, Baltimore, New York, none of them were particularly as awe-inspiring as the cities of the past two games. Maybe this'll be more about horizontal traversal, ranged fighting, etc. Or maybe they fudge it and throw in some anachronistic things to climb.

I'm a lot more interested in how the gameplay mechanics will be affected by this setting. Early Colonial America isn't exactly known for its towering structures or sprawling cities, so I'm guessing Ubisoft will have some new stuff to roll out from a gameplay standpoint in this game.

How cool would it be if it turns out to be extremely nature-focused, using natural elements like trees, snow and camouflage to provide the Assassin his elements of surprise and stealth instead of leaping from large structures.

@buzz_killington: Any source to this? Not saying it's not wrong, but have you seen the credits for the AC games? They're a mile long! I can't imagine they're is an entire team that wasn't even involved in AC:B. Apparently everyone in montreal works at Ubisoft.

Thank god. Can't wait to play an Assassin's that isn't an Ezio interlude. I feel like Brotherhood and Revelations have somewhat diluted the franchise. Now we have a real, honest-to-god Assassin's sequel that makes good on the promise that each game will take place in a wildly different setting and historical period.

Absolutely terrible setting for this series. A game focused on free running set in an era with nothing but one story buildings? Yeah. That makes sense. The open field areas of the previous games were always boring as heck.

Unless they plan to completely reboot the mechanics or something. Might be okay in that case.

@Shaanyboi: An entire game around that would be kinda hard, but just think of they made the last 2/5ths of this game to put you on a narrow path of some crazy world, be it present or first civilization? I feel like there's a reason they've been holding back on letting you see Desmond's world.

I look forward to collecting a bunch of British scalps.

Also as far as gameplay goes, as much as I love the series it has gotten pretty samey. I'm perfectly alright if they try to change things up a bit. Think about it, American Revolutionists used a lot of sneaky guerrilla tactics in the forest to fight back the British. I would love it if this game went from building hopping to running across trees, deploying traps, and basically doing a bunch of crazy Snake Eater shit. Super excited.

@peEtr:

I was thinking of him being an assassin, and/or able to use the Apple of Eden, rather than being an ancestor of Desmond's. Brotherhood and Revelations make clear that not just anyone can use the artifacts.

Choosing a native american is interesting because it lets them have the main character be neutral in this conflict. He'll doubtless be running around killing folks, but since he won't presumably be an actual colonial or redshirt, he can take out whoever needs taking out. A girl main character would have been more interesting, and the box art definitely suggests male, but I like the route they're going quite a lot for everything else.

The native american main character is also interesting because it lets them present the story from a perspective outside of the HOORAH jingoism the international community most likely expects from anything american in this day and age. I wouldn't be surprised to see several characters presented which act with that jingoism who the main character will then make fun of. This would make it more appealing to international people who might be put off by the distinctly american setting.

As much as I would have prefered seeing Ancient Egypt, Feudal Japan or the French Revolution, fuck yes, I am in. You know what I hope? That they do a proper sequel to this game and set it during the Civil War, so we can see the bloody thing without Hollywood taming it.

Yeah, those poor British imperialist soldiers throughout history. Also, as you can see in the background, this is during a battle. That's not exactly "murder" (any more than it's "murder" any time someone is killed in war).

Also, Desmond is boring as fuck as a character and while a modern AC setting would be rad just because it'd be modern, I could care less about playing him for any longer than the story requires in any given AC game.

It sure looks more interesting than anything AC has thrown recently, but I will need to see it in motion though. There are too many things in the gameplay I don't know how they will translate to the new setting.

I will also be disappointed if all the templars are on the british side, while the good guys are all american revolutionaries... Seems too politically correct for a game made out of "different people from different cultures".

This looks like a great setting. If this character is as long-lived as Ezio, he could conceivably pop up in the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. You've got AC III (2) and AC III (3) covered right there!

Also, tomahawk kills.

Ah fuck America! What will you do there? Climb on trees? How big were the buildings there? I mean compared to the Dome of Rock, medieval Italy or the Hagia Sofia? I fear they will remove all the verticality. I feel they betrayed by Ubisofts decision to remove it from Europe, but I think they can pull it off.

I love the AC series for choosing time periods that are largely overlooked by games. This is excellent! And it makes sense as AC:R starts to allude to New England being a key location in the mythos.

@UltimAXE: Exactly, Boston, Philadelphia, and New York would make for very boring settings, low buildings, small streets, close against the water and carefully walled. The countryside or native villages would obviously be not much better. Maybe if they expand environmental traversal (rock-climbing perhaps, or river-rafting or climbing and leaping between trees) they could make those outdoor settings more engaging.
