Valve Confirms New Counter-Strike for PC and...Consoles?

He's baaaaaaaack.

First artwork for the new Counter-Strike game, coming in early 2012 to PC, Mac, consoles.

Instead of finally announcing Half-Life 3, Valve has confirmed suspicions something was up with the Counter-Strike franchise the studio has left alone for a few years now.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a brand-new installment being developed in conjunction with Hidden Path Entertainment, the developers behind Defense Grid.

It's been 12 years since Counter-Strike first burst onto the scene as a Half-Life mod, but it returns early next year on PC, Mac, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network (yes, consoles--cue the angry PC crowd!).

If you're at the Penny Arcade Expo later this month, though, you'll get to play it far ahead of release.

Valve hasn't released any screen shots of the game yet, only the logo. The studio said Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will feature "new maps, characters, and weapons," "updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.)," and "new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more."

A downloadable shooter from Valve? Count us in.

Xbox Live and PSN? Rest in piece, Counter Strike. *tear*

HL2 on Xbox? Rest in Piece, Half-life. *tear*

Portal 2 on consoles? Rest in piece, Portal. *tear*

Steam on PS3? Rest in piece, Steam. *tear*

HL2 was made for PC, only later ported to Xbox. So PC version was safe from the dumbening.Portal 2 was made for consoles, so I dont even...   Cute.
Yeah, the clever dialog, masterful voice-work, brilliant level designs, expertly-paced plotting, and ominous aesthetics were really lost in porting the game from consoles.

Valve games are made for PC. Because you know, they kinda control that platform.

I can't imagine anything new beating the original CS in terms of raw feel, just like a new quake wouldn't beat Quake 3 in that respect. I can only see them putting a lot into the surrounding stuff like they have done with TF2, which holds pretty much no interest for someone like me. CS will always be special to me just because I have so many memories attached to it but I don't think I have the lifestyle or the time to get into a new one.. I hope the new generation of 13-18 year olds can enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the original during this period of my life. 'e-Sports' will become a legitimate 'thing' one day and Counter-Strike should always be remembered as the grand daddy. He's still got some fight in him yet.

If they change any actual gameplay, I feel like that would ruin it. CS is virtually perfected and as long as they just add to the game a little and update it's look, I think it could be a good addition.

Damn, you guys need to chill. It's fucking Valve, when have they ever shown the slightest interest in catering to the console crowd?

The console versions will be acceptable ports of an excellent PC game. No ironsights or killstreaks, no insta-knife, limited DLC support for the consoles (if there's even going to be any at all). Basically, think Left 4 Dead.

CS is a game designed for a mouse and keyboard, unlike CoD. CS as it is wouldn't be good on consoles, no one wants them to make compromises in order to make it good on consoles.

Lose the dickheads that populate CS & I'm in. Wait, shit. There'd be no-one to play against. Meh, then.

If this is like an updated 1.6 instead of CSS this will be awesome.

I'll undoubtedly agree that 1.6 is better than CSS but I have a problem with the idea that CSS is not exactly just an attempt at an updated CS 1.6.

No dumbing down please valve.

Can't wait to see what they come up with, I still play short cs_office sessions almost daily.

I love seeing the bitchy PC gamers rage. As someone who has been playing CS since 1.6 I am excited. Let the console players in on the fun, if it sucks then oh well. Valve didn't fucked up Portal 2 or L4D2 and those were both big on consoles.

Only buying it if I get a hat in TF2 with it.

@Phonics: Please tell me the reasoning for it to be slower? The most popular FPS on consoles (COD) is faster than Counter Strike.

Posted by familyphotoshoot

CS 1.6 was a Half-Life 1 mod

CS: Source was designed for the engine built for Half-Life 2

CS: GO will run on ?

I THINK I'M ON TO SOMETHING GUYS

Posted by myslead

@JEC03: CS has always been pretty straight forward, not sure if there is something to dumb down in the first place lol

Oh that was terrible. I don't know who was responsible for that, but I hope they aren't allowed near games again.

You know they actually made another game, a little known game called Left 4 Dead.

Read http://eseanews.com/index.php?s=news&d=comments&id=9969, which is a report from one the pro CS players who was invited a few weeks ago to Valve to playtest.

To anyone that missed this, READ IT. Hands on with Pre-Beta Playtest feedback. Also, Valve isn't selling out. You guys are ridiculous. Counter-Stiker: Condition Zero came out on consoles. Orange Box came out on current gen consoles. So did L4D and Portal franchises. Get a grip on reality.

Their specialty is PC gaming, but they're showing the console Devs how it's done when making games multi-platform. If you're gonna port to PC, don't just shit out a port and call it done. Tweak it so it works right and feels native to the platform.

Whoa! Ok then. Just thought I'd point out the fact that, yet again, in a PC oriented news article/thread, the number of people expecting some sort of nerd rage far outweighs the number of actual raging crazies (I count about 3 genuinely idiotic rage comments, and about 10 comments flaming a non-existent, assumed majority of angry fanboys, despite the overwhelming majority of comments from console and PC gamers being positive

Anyway. This sounds cool. I never really liked CS, probably because I came a little late to the party, but I'm interested to see how this turns out.

Patrick you do know that Counter Strike has been on consoles before right?  I guess you can't be bothered to research before you write an article.

Here let me link you the Giant Bomb pages:

Pretty much all of Valve's releases have been on consoles but good job trying to stir up PC-Console shit  and getting the name of the game wrong.

On an unrelated note, why was Brad Nicholson fired again?

ARRRRRRRGH BLIZZARD THIS GAME IS TOO COLORFUL WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUCK

Par for the course for PC gamers. Bitching about nothing, mad that their precious IP is going multiplatform so they have one less thing to feel superior about... Yup, nothing new here.

And before anyone says anything, I do most of my gaming on my PC. I'm just not an asshole about it.

Posted by nintendoeats

Fina-fucking-ly.

I can't wait to see what they do to CS. It's been sitting there more or less unchanged since 1.6, I have to imagine they have some crazy ideas that they have been dying to try out.

Posted by nintendoeats

@Phonics: Yo, they made CS for the xbox. It wasn't Call of Duty.

Edited by MrKlorox

Good luck. I just hope those weekend COD gamers are finally getting ready for some teamwork. I've already accepted that BF is way too involved for those people, but CS seems like an incremental step in the right direction. MW always seemed like a dumbed down CS to me.

Posted by TatsurouXIII

ah yes, the children of the internet will have something new to jerk off to. like if cod ain't enough...

TO everyone saying that this new cs ins gonna be dumbed down you need to do research before you start saying a bunch shit that you don't know about. Valve has invited in the CSS competitive community(mainly pros from Europe and ESEA which is NA's 1.6/CSS competitive scene) to playtest the game. So this game is going to be built around the competitive scene that of which I am happy for. One of the playtesters did an AmA on reddit it has some more info on CS:GO. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/jgehv/iama_guy_who_spend_the_day_at_valves_headquarters/

Really Patrick?

I thought you were above that. You led the Deus Ex QL.

You really think PC gamers would care that CS is reaching consoles too, especially considering how long it's been exclusive, how the rest of the key VALVe Source Engine catalogue is on consoles and the fact that gaming in FPS is always quicker on mouse and keyboard?

I game exclusively on PC, used to be a serious CS player and I don't care a whit.

Oh man-- how could they ever make a sequel to this game!? especially after the ending in CS:S :| WHEN THE TERRORISTS WON!?  (I hope there's finally going to be a good arctic map... I'm pretty damn tired of my skin never blending in.)
