Valve, J.J. Abrams Want to Collaborate on Movies, Games

Who knows if anything actually happens, but Patrick is freaking out.

No Caption Provided

It’s an unwritten rule between Alex and I to avoid the most of the news about Hollywood picking the rights to produce movies based on video games, largely because they almost never happen.

That said, all bets are off when it comes to Paul Walker (Alex) and JJ Abrams (me). I'd apologize, except I'm not going to apologize.

Anyway, Valve founder Gabe Newell and director J.J. Abrams were part of a joint keynote this morning, the kickoff for the the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas this week (we aren't there, sadly). The duo revealed a mutual admiration for one another, and Abrams revealed he’d like to work with Valve on a game, and Valve would like to work with Abrams on possibly creating a Half-Life or Portal movie.

No real details were revealed, and it may only be aspirational between the two, at the moment.

The keynote was titled “Storytelling Across Platforms: Who Benefits Most, the Audience or the Player?”

The connection between Valve and Abrams isn’t completely new. An interactive teaser trailer for Abrams’ Spielbergian flick Super 8 was produced using Valve’s Source engine in 2011.

Spoiler alert: Nothing is going to come out of this.

The same thing happened with Del Toro, Jackson and Spielberg (well, I kinda don´t count Boom Blox) bunch of hype and nothing to show.

It’s an unwritten rule between Alex and I

I hate to be that guy, but this is a nit I must pick. It's an unwritten rule between Alex and "me". Well, Alex and Patrick, but in that sentence, Patrick is I and should be me, see?

Something gets on my nerves about Hollywood and games merging. I guess it's sort of because Abrams is not a game designer so it seems like it would be a shameless branding grab to attach his name to a game. Like that del Toro game. It's monopolizing personality when there are a lot of talented game designers who don't get mainstream recognition. Moreover, I worry about Hollywood influence on games. Games are a billion times more varied and creative than Hollywood movies (I mean in terms of: Hollywood movies having the same Hollywood stars, the same three act structure, mass appeal cookie-cutter movies, etc. etc.. "Creativity" isn't exactly encouraged in Hollywood, is all I'm saying.)

Maybe that's facile or stupid, but it's just a gut reaction; not really a complete thought.

I hope this keynote was recorded in some fashion, I'd love to listen to it.

First, can we stop sucking the dick of everyone in Hollywood, as if their form of entertainment is somehow superior and we have to learn from them?

Second, JJ Abrams is over-hyped and sucks at endings (thanks, but game writers can already write decent games with shit endings, as it is!). And trotting out his anecdote about the magic mystery box his dad gave him that he has never opened because the mystery is more meaningful than the truth ever could be in order to excuse his shit endings is a lame justification.

Third, JJ Abrams probably wants to do a lot of stuff. Saying so doesn't make it a reality and hopefully Gabe would show the wisdom to tap someone with more talent than fame to produce something of quality for them, rather than doing the "we paired up with a famous Hollywood guy because... whatever!". Abrams has done a couple decent movies, but most of what I have seen (especially Lost and Fringe) have had pretty poor final acts that followed a bunch of mumbo jumbo middles and beginnings that are totally deflated by the way the throw-away endings devalue them.

Let JJ Abrams do what he does - making decent movies and shitty television shows. If a collaboration is ever necessary, emphasis a search for talent rather than brand name value. When your'e Valve, you don't need the brand name assistance. You need the quality content creator.

This is going to be either a pipedream or a disaster.

It's going to be a pipe-dream. All he did was say something like "I'd like to work with Valve" while he was giving a talk. Shit, Notch said he'd like to fund Psychonauts 2. *shrug*

People would like to do a ton of shit. Just because they say it doesn't mean they really intend it or that there is any reality behind. For another example, let's think of . . . that whole "ermagherd, Nathan Fillion wants us to start a fundraiser to gather a few hundred million dollars so we can buy the rights to Firefly and he can make a bunch of new seasons of it!" from a few years ago . . . .

This has to just be aspirational though, right? I mean, you get two guys who like each others work on stage, they get a bit gushy and the audience (read; the press) jump to conclusions. Don't get me wrong, if they did collaborate then I'm sure something interesting could come from it, but I also know that films and games are very different beasts and nothing in life is certain. As a HL fan I'm also inclined to say, "Gabe, stick to your guns and DON'T turn this into a film." Even in JJ was at the helm I don't see the end product being anything I would really want to see. However, get Abrams on board as a script consultant for HL3 or the next Portal game and you might be onto something.

Ugh - any TV/film writer, director, or producer who agrees to pose for a picture of them casually pointing to their own head like "this is where the magic comes from!", needs to be flogged with a golf club.

I liked Star Trek 2009 (though it was kind of brutally disrespectful of Star Trek canon), but JJ Abrams has created a lot of shitty stuff in the past few years, too.

It's hilarious how many people will take any chance, no matter how slight, to dig at Patrick. Seriously, the article authors don't always write the decks (where Patrick is referenced by name).

Also: "I'd apologize, except I'm not going to apologize." I HAW'd.

I disagree with the rest of your post as I actually like Abrams quite a bit (certainly more in movies than TV, but that's another story) but THIS has got to be in my top 5 pet peeves of the videogame industry. It makes us look like a little kid desperate for their big brother's attention and approval and it's PATHETIC.

@Branthog:

My thoughts exactly, Hollywood and company need to stay the fuck away from the games industry, unless it's truly to the benefit of the content.

Anytime there is bleed over, film industry people should be treated as humbled guests when collaborating on game content and not some fucking savior or star that is going to show us how to do it right.

I really hope this doesn't become a reality, I prefer Valve's Meet the Team series 10 to 1 over any of today's Hollywood dribble. Now if we were talking about 80s-90s Hollywood that might be different.

Bullshit. As someone who has watched all of TNG and most of DS9 I loved 2009's Star Trek and it definitely has some of the core principles of the franchise. The most important part of any story is its emotional core, and for Star Trek that tends to be self-sacrifice and friendship, two things the reboot was full of. Everything else is just the window dressing.

@Branthog: What endings are you even talking about? Has he even been involved in the endings of any of the TV shows he started? He didn't write the endings to any of those shows, and I don't know if he was even still involved at that point. You can't really judge him by his early work, so all you're really left with is MI3 and Super 8 which both had fine endings and Super 8 had a great last scene.

@TheGorilla: Star Trek 2009 has nothing to say about ethics or morality. There is no dilemma about the use of technology or science, no commentary on the interplay of religion and science, nothing about equality or discrimination, no commentary on philosophy, culture, or humanism. 2009 is a black and white version of Star Trek with lens flare. It was an excellent action movie with a Sci Fi setting but it didn't have the things I love about Star Trek.

and almost all of it took place on or above Earth.

Half Life 2 Episode 3 to be a movie releasing simultaneously on Steam and in theatres, Fall 2013.
