Valve Launches Steam Trading Beta

New bartering system is almost assuredly the first step toward launching a reality show, where middle-aged overweight men haggle for the contents of abandoned Steam accounts.

Have you ever had a leftover or gifted game sitting around your hard drive, and wished to yourself, "Man, I sure do wish I could trade this to a friend for a sweet in-game item in Team Fortress 2!"? Then friends, does Valve ever have a sweet new offer for you!

Today marks the launch of the Steam Trading beta, a new system within the Steam client that allows users to trade everything from random in-game items to full games with each other at the drop of the hat. Unless of course the thing you're trading is a hat. Then you probably shouldn't drop that.

This seems fair.
This seems fair.

Users can opt in by going to their settings tab and selecting the "opt into Steam Trading beta" option. Once you're in, you can set up a trade with anyone on your friends list that has also opted in, or anyone residing within a group chat you happen to be in. Currently, the only title that supports in-game item trading is Team Fortress 2, but Portal 2 is expected to receive support next, and Valve aims to add support to several third-party titles as well. As for full games, any game that has been gifted to you, or came as part of a package release as an extra copy can be traded away, meaning it's now easier to regift than ever before.

The idea of trading digital copies of games does present an interesting theory. While the current scope of Steam Trading is limited to games that haven't been opened on a users' PC, what's to stop this concept from morphing into a method of online used game sales? Yes, issues like install keys, DRM, and whatever else probably make that a difficult prospect beyond the scope of games purchased within the Steam client, but even still, it's an interesting concept to think about.

Regardless, that's probably a ways off, if it ever happens at all. Right now, you'll just have to stick to trading hats for unwanted gifted copies of AquaNox 2: Revelation. Seriously, if anyone wants this copy of AquaNox 2, I will just give it to you. I sincerely have no idea how my dad even found that thing on Steam, let alone thought I would want it.

How come Teddy is so valuable if you can simply buy it in Mann Co. store... Or am I missing something here completely?

Loving it so far. I have a desktop for games and a laptop that can't play much of anything but this allows me to trade Team Fortress 2 items between two premium accounts without much hassle. Another plus is allowing users to trade more than 8 TF2 items which is a huge time saver and probably helps against getting ripped off.

Teddy Roosebelt for L4D1? Not worth it. It's worth about 2.5 Teddy Roosebelts, or 2 Bill's, or a Buds. Yay TF2 economy jargon!

I would gladly trade my copy of L4D1 (or 2) for a Teddy Roosebelt.

D-.. do you want my Teddy Roosebelt for a copy of L4D1?

For in-game sales trades, you would probably have to pay something,
a monthly fee or give a cut to Steam (who then cuts it with the Developer).

Yeah I realized this a moment ago. Oh well I've got extra copies of Portal, Half Life 2, Episode 1, Defense Grid and soon Darksiders that I'll hopefully be able to do something with.

this is a pretty cool idea...

Now, when a game is on crazy steam sale & I already own it, I can buy some copies discounted, and then when the game jumps back up to full price, I can trade it for some other full-price games, provided I can find somebody with the specific game I want.

Guys, FYI: You can trade "gift" copies of games for other "gift" copies of games, not just TF2 hats. If you bought Orange Box you already have duplicates of HL2 and Episode One. Granted they're probably not high-ticket items but you can make a random Steam player happy for a free game.

Maybe I can get Portal 2 hats and other assorted goodies with this... the ideas are endless.

Game trading is something that needs to happen! Although it kinda foils the idea of having people buy single player games, because once you've finished it you might as well trade it to someone.

@Agent47: There's nothing lazy about people choosing Netflix over Blockbuster. They offer much more for much less even with their recent price increase. There's also Gamefly if you're so keen on renting games. They also offer much more for much less.

@Frank_Mann: I was only joking around but I do belive things like this prove that people are getting lazier.Like BlockBuster(a video retail store where I live)I used to rent all my movies and games there after the week ended so I could relax from school. But since that stupid Netflix shit started they closed BlockBuster down so I can't rent any games at all I miss out on so many titles I just buy the ones I know will be good so it saddens me.But I hope you are joking with your comment cause if thats true then man you are lazy as hell bro not saying it in a dick way just in a neutral way with a friendly overtone jaja.

@Agent47:  You're so right. I know I just love to get into my car, or wait for the bus, fight downtown traffic, find parking downtown, go into Gamestop and be hassled by the clerk to reserve a game or ten, then get back into traffic, find parking back home, unwrap the box and it's bullshit theft proof seals, put the DVD in my computer, do all the key bullshit, wait for install, then finally play. Total time around 2-3 hours depending on traffic, lines, etc.

OR...I could get out my credit card, buy the game, install on high speed connection, and do more meaningful shit than sitting in traffic while install/dl is going on. Total time around 30-45 minutes, depending on game size, and almost no time is wasted on the "fetching" of the game.

Time is worth money, as the adage goes. I just saved around 2 hours of it by buying it on Steam. I'm not lazy, I'm rational.

I'd much prefer web-browser-TF2-item-crafting and drops for item management, like during a glance at one's TF2-backpack (so that technically: you're still playing the game even though an instance of it isn't actively running, even in the background), and/or web-browser-replay-management (recording, editing and saving) to trading, but it's a start.

edit: (so that you could do crafting and video editing, from... like an iPad. That would be awesome)

edit, edit: ...Because you have to "drop everything" to do either while playing TF2 too, since Valve has the omni-present warning about the mortality of your unedited and "unsaved" videos hovering above your replay collection.
