Valve Team Fortress 2 Community Creators Get Some Fat Checks

The Mann Co. Store is up and running, people are buying, and the creators are getting a cut.

Not too long ago, Valve added the Mann Co. Store to Team Fortress 2, allowing users to exchange items and real world cash for in-game items. Thus far, this new storefront has been featuring community-created wares from the winners of the Polycount item-modding contest, and as was promised, these creators are taking home a cut of what has been made during the first two weeks of the Mann Co. Store's existence--and it's a jaw-dropping amount.

According to Valve, five creators, Rob Laro, Shawn Spetch, Steven Skidmore, Spencer Kern and Shylyn Hamm, have taken home checks ranging from $39,000 to $47,000 dollars per person. That's, like, a lot of money for optional (and goofy) items and weapons.

No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==Gamasutra reckons from conversations its had with Valve and the winners that the cut is 25 percent, meaning, according to Big Download, that Valve has potentially made around half a million bones from these knickknacks. Half a million!

"At a time when content creators are struggling with changing markets and evolving technologies, the Steam community is sending a clear message with these checks," Valve president Gabe Newell said in a press release statement.

If you're saying to yourself, "Hey, I like money and I can do this," go ahead. Valve has a website up for those who want to contribute to future updates or learn more about the process. And, hey, since I told you about it and all, think I could get five-percent of whatever you make? Just asking.

I only hope I won't be extremely gimped someday by some dude who bought some crazy weapon that cost $29.95. "
No weapons in TF2 cost $30.

The most expensive item on the store are the Polycount update hats at $17, which IS crazy.  The average item costs between $0.50 to $4.99.

The prices are crazy but you can still obtain all the gear the normal way of drops and crafting. It's totally optional and no content is being cut off from anyone.

Yeah it's a little confusing when you spell the word wrong. Originally I read it as "fat chicks"...

They never started failing.

EDIT: And now I got a PM from you about how Valve can't "fix a game to save their lives" which makes no sense since none of their games are broken.

"LOL" is all I can say to that. Valve is easily the highest quality developer out there. The Half-Life series? The Portal series? The Left 4 Dead series? Team Fortress 2 (the PC version, at least)? I'd understand if someone just wasn't into their games, but to say that they're failing at anything, let alone "everything"? I have no problem with differing opinions, but that is just straight-up wrong.

Oh, and don't PM me about this too, Dinoracha. I won't read it.

I can promise you, you won't be gimped. For most (if not all) classes, their default weapons alone are more than adequate, if you know how to use them. The key for any weapon is how skilled you are at using it. The Spy's new knife isn't very useful to me, but there are others who destroy with it.

Within days of the Polycount update, I had almost all the new weapons. I didn't spend a dime on them - I crafted them. And I've only been playing the PC version since the summer, so it's not like I've had a significant head-start. I was shocked by the high item prices too, but then I realized that Valve is clearly offering the store only as a means for the desperate to get what they want. I mean, if someone's crazy enough to spend $20 on a pack of new gear, let 'em. Meanwhile, I'll just be patiently building up my inventory for free and missing out on virtually nothing.

Is that the American way of spelling cheques?  I've seen a few sites mis-spell it recently.

@IncredibleBulk92: Apparently 'check' is the American English spelling for the word 'cheque'.
I prefer the correct spelling of it, although I imagine if you spelt it as cheque in a USA school it would be marked as incorrect.

I wonder if this modding...model heh, heh, would be feasible in other games. Eventually I could see tons of games adopting in-game stores and letting content creators sell their stuff to the various game communities. I mean, 70,000 dollars. My god, work for a year or build 1 game mod, decisions decisions.

Really good of Valve to give them a decent cut. To me it seems they could have gotten away with a lot less.

Wow, that's pretty impressive.  Not sure how much content each person is responsible for but that's some decent supplemental income for something you do in your spare time.  Also commendable on Valve's part, I hope this starts a trend in other modding communities...cause nothing generates content like competition and cold hard cash can :)

Great, though Wikipedia lists the disambiguation as "Cheque," since Check can also be a verb of completely different meaning.

soon to be better chance at winning a contest for free video game system than to win this.  It was a contest, and now all the 3d modelers will be pouring in after stories (this is old story) like this are posted.

expect to have to compete with thousands and thousands of modelers looking for easy cash like this.
