Visceral Games Staffing Up For Dante's Inferno 2?

An EA job listing makes it sound like more Dante's is on the way.

Instead of moving on to Don Quixote, Jack the Ripper, or Titus character-based action games, it appears as if Visceral Games is staffing up for a sequel to this year's Dante's Inferno--at least, a recent job listing from EA.com seems to suggest as much.

"Seeking a highly motivated game designer & level builder for a new IP in the action/adventure genre," the listing reads. "Looking for a creative leader. This is a major opportunity to contribute to a bold new franchise, heavily backed by the EA Games Label."

The big tip-off is located a little lower in the listing, as it mentions specifically this game will be a sequel to a "major new IP" and Visceral Games is name-dropped as the team in question. Melee combat, 3D level design, and knowledge of cinema framing are also mentioned, which if you remember, are all things Dante's Inferno has. Granted, a billion other games do, too.

Hopefully, the last game my mother will have a role in.

== TEASER ==Considering the vague nature of these listings, there's a chance we're wrong: the listing could be for... Dead Space: Kick Fighter or The Simpsons Game 2: Simpsons Harder or something. But in light of the reception and decent sales of Dante's Inferno, it seems more likely that we're talking about a Dante's sequel.

Hmm. Now that I think about it, that Simpsons game doesn't sound so bad. Make it happen, Visceral.

Do you fight the 7 streets of Purgatory followed by the 9 steps of Heaven this time?

Posted by Microshock

If Dante's Inferno wasn't such an ass rip-off of God of War, then I'd be excited.

The only thing it was good for was to be a placeholder while everyone waited for God of War 3

So...Purgatorio and Paradiso coming soon?

....That sounds like a really bad idea....

No shit. Unless they revamp the gameplay, the character, the design (read: everything) I'll continue to hate this direction EA has gone in with a passion.

Anyone know how well the first sold?

I liked the first one just fine.
I'm game for more of Dante's Big Adventure.

I'm playing through Dante's Inferno right now and I'm loving it. So there!

Posted by Binman88

I actually vastly preferred DI to GOW3, so I'm looking forward to it.

Posted by TheFreeMan

It took me way too long to get the mom joke. Good one.

Also, I'm interested in seeing how they work with a sequel to Dante's Inferno and all the inevitably insane shit that they're gonna put in it.

Posted by Aarny91

Pass. The first sucked.

I remember I was pretty excited about the first game until I saw that infamous video on this site.

The listing is kind of big, though. Are they really auditioning for a new game designer? That is like asking for a reboot.

And Brad, I wouldn't consider The Simpsons a "new IP"... just saying.

Nah.

I actually liked Dante's Inferno more than GoWIII, this is fucking awesome news IMO.

If it is a sequel, I guess he's going to Purgatory if they follow the three cantas.

They said this is a new IP, which can only mean this is going to be Visceral's version of The Scarlet Letter.

Fight as Hester Pryne, shooting massive As and using a giant letter A to fight against hordes of good  men who want her to tell them her baby daddy's name and take away his baby. Fight the hordes of naggy women who shake their heads at her. Protect you daughter from your husband. And team up in two player cooperative with Arthur Dimmesdale to battle back the hordes of married people who did not commit adultery, but make sure not to get too close together, or both characters lose their abilities. The Scarlet Letter, coming next summer!

Making DI such a carbon copy of GoW was a big mistake, in my opinion. Visceral is capable of so much more, and I thought they knew better than that. If the sequel has its own identity, there may still be hope.

Another Dante's Inferno? Meh

1. Lose the cartoon.
2. Don't recycle enemies from previous circles.

I can't wait not to play your game a second time.

Posted by Xolare

Alright, I guess I'm the only one that wants a sequel. Great.

Posted by Landon

Pass.

Posted by Kiro

Calling it now. the new IP will be The Art of War. You'll be playing as Sun Tzu himself as he walks the path to become the greatest killing machine of the ancient world.

Dante's Inferno 2: Degrade Classic Literature Harder

Maybe Alan Rickman will be the devil in this one...

Edit: Once I read the article throughout, I noticed Brad made the same Die Hard joke that I did.  Fail.

Okay, try this: Dante's Inferno 2: Electric Boogaloo.  Boom.

Dante's Inferno wasn't a bad game.  It had some issues, but was still enjoyable.  I'd like to see what they change in a sequel.

Posted by raikoh05

is it going to be good and on pc this time?

While I feel Dante's Inferno was definitely less than Visceral was capable of (also underwhelming considering I played God of War III first), I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing it exists.  The problem I had with the game was that the historical/poetic parts were more interesting than the gameplay.  I think they made a lot of missteps... my favorite parts of Dante's Inferno were the ones that made Dante look like a man, rather than a deity of conflict... there are a lot of areas in the game which could have called for a lot more level design than just 'kill all these demons, yo'.

Excited/cautious to see how Visceral handles the much more introspective second and third chapters of the Comedy.  It's easy to make a boiling river of blood with the souls of tyrants and murderers into a character action level... it's a bit tougher to render a mountainous hike where souls consider the righteousness of their earthly motivations into something where you can hit X to do a quick attack.

Fun story on that video... Ryan obviously blew through the game neglecting the cross, which turned his hours of frustration into about 40 seconds of dodging and mashing B.

Jeff actually could have taken the controller from Ryan and beat it on his first try.

This made my day. Kudos to you sir.

The only saddening thing is that now I desperately want to play The Scarlet Letter, and I won't get to.

With God of War 3 out and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow on the horizon, these guys are SERIOUSLY gonna have to step their game up. Dante's Inferno was a serviceable GoW clone and a decent stopgap, but absolutely nothing more. It had decent atmosphere, but that's about it.

Nah, the 9 steps of Heaven are for Dante's Inferno 3.

The pardoning mini-games were not only annoying, but made no sense. Then, the absolve option was poorly named seeing as how Dante brutally murdered the creature he was supposedly absolving. ALSO, how do you pardon the characters in the game who haven't even wronged you??
...Hm. Mechanically the game was solid, but the rest was just stupid.

I can just imagine how XTREME they'll make Purgatory if they decide to green light a sequel.

I believe the first one actually sold quite well, but I could be wrong.

No matter how good the second one is, the first one will be a blight on any effort called Dante's Whatever.  Making the first game a God of War clone basically means any other game in the franchise HAS to mirror that and frankly that means the entire franchise is utterly dead to me.

They could have made a great character-driven story-based game but instead it was a soulless angsty sub-par God of War clone.  Again it begs the question of why they needed the license if they wanted to evoke hell.  Just put it in hell and call it a day.

If the game was conceptually sound but executed poorly, a sequel is justified.  Not the other way around.  And it's not like the game was executed so well that it can hold up a second time.  This is just EA making a game purely for the money and they're not being honest about it (which is what actually bothers me).  I only hope Visceral knows what that franchise means because that's years of work down the drain if they don't.

The Inferno 2 is my favorite poem book of all time W8WUT

Edited by NTM

Cool. I liked the first a lot although I can easily agree it had problems. I'd buy the second without a doubt, unless it was an abomination. I also saw the animated film, but that had problems too even though it was good as well. And yeah, better than GOW3.

I just picked up the game recently and loved it. Would be awsome to have a sequel.

Posted by niamahai

they just gotta make bigger demon dicks and the game will be all right.

Annnndddd here come the literature elitists.

i loved Dante's Inferno.. and never understood why people so easily fell for the "this is a God Of War clone so you'r suppose to hate it" stigma.  as a game on it's own accord, it was a great adventure game and i thoroughly enjoyed it and would happily put down $60 more for another romp with it.

I think it 's funny that this game gets so much hate. It's made by the creators of the much praised Dead Space which is a RE4 rip-off.

Posted by Lydian_Sel

Good for them, I hope they make a really tight sequel & improve on a bunch of the originals issues.
