Warhammer 40K MMO is No Longer a Warhammer 40K MMO, Layoffs Hit Relic and Vigil

There's probably going to be a day when we report happy THQ news. This isn't that day.

It's not that we enjoy talking about THQ's miseries, though you'd be forgiven for thinking so, given the general volume of rather lousy news we've reported on the publisher in the last several months. Today's news probably isn't going to help matters, but we swear, we hate reporting on this. It's just that this stuff keeps happening.

Imagine this, but less massively online.
Imagine this, but less massively online.

Today's woeful news comes surrounding THQ's former Warhammer MMO, Dark Millennium. At one point not too long ago, industry fixture Kevin Dent proclaimed the game dead on twitter, which got THQ PR into a tizzy of denials, claiming the game was still in the works, though eventually conceding that the company was seeking a partner to help finance and publish the game.

Now Dent's proclamations of doom have been proven partially right, as the game has been shifted to a more traditional "premium" single- and multiplayer game. Dark Millennium, the MMO, is dead. Long live Dark Millennium, the single-player-focused adventure, apparently. The new version of Millennium will include online multiplayer, but it shall be decidedly less massive than previously intended.

As if that news weren't troubling enough, THQ decided to put a particularly unpleasant tasting cherry on top of this whole shit sundae by also announcing over a hundred layoffs, split between Vigil Games and Relic Entertainment. 79 were let go from Vigil, while 39 were laid off at Relic.

The layoffs were perhaps inevitable, given the shift in Dark Millennium's direction. Still, this is just the latest volley of layoffs surrounding THQ products in a year's span that has already seen several bouts of this. 240 employees were let go back in February, while last June THQ shuttered Kaos Studios, the team behind Homefront, altogether.

Wow.... I just saw this game on mmo-play.com and now that I'm reading up on it... That really sucks. Are they going to close the game or just cut content here and there? I don't understand!

I'm curious how such a huge vast MMO world will handle just one player. Are they going to minimize the world? Make it open world like Fallout or Skyrim to handle just one player? Take out all the instances and raids? That's my biggest concern. How they are going to take an MMO quality landscape and make it into single player.

This really fucking sucks! The only MMO I would even consider playing at this point was 40k DM... I'm so horribly disappointed! I was gonna be a Eldar Warlock... With a power sword and a pistol! Dammit!!!!

So would I. I'm curious how action oriented was the combat actually going to be though? I hadn't heard that really expressed.

If it's done pretty well and there is RPG progression, I'm actually quite excited and probably more excited than for the MMO. Hopefully we still get multiple factions though.

Honestly, I'll be more likely to pick this game up now that it's a single player focused affair with only a mild focus on multiplayer. I've never been big on MMOs anyway but I love the Warhammer games. Still, it's horrible news about Relic and Vigil. They are two of my favorite modern developers, Relic in particular.

Are there any women in the 40k universe? Or anyone whose life isn't, y'know, constant unending misery? Is there any domestic life? I dunno if the setting would have worked as an MMO anyway.

Yeah, that appeals to me more than an MMO to be honest. It could be a good thing in the long run?

As much as I'd love the idea of a 40K MMO, deep down part of me knows it would have a hard time finding a big enough player base to really work. a More focused Action RPG/Multiplayer game could be a good thing in the long run...s till it's very sad. I'm worried that the lay-offs at Vigil will affect the Darksider's franchise which I'd really love to see continue to grow.

I am kinda disappointed that they wont get the game they wanted to make but I supposed a third person shooter/rpg a la space marine is much better than no game at all.

Oh well... there goes my most anticipated MMO... So I have to put my hopes in "The Secret World"... And we all know how this might end, judging by Funcom's track record so far...

I know :(

I heard from a couple of people (and Jeff) that GW2 wasn't as amazing as it looked, which Fing suuuuucks, because the only thing that will get me back into MMOs is something very different.

I don't actually think Secret World looks that great, I don't get why everyone thinks it does. Is there a video or something I missed?

Even so Age of Conan was my last Funcom game (I was so excited for that game, and it started great) but man they really let you down.

It's not so much the mechanics or the looks which keeps me interested in "The Secret World", but more the general setting. I am really a total sucker for all these Cthulhu and conspiracy stuff...

Seriously, they probably weren't working on a Homeworld follow-up but DAMN killing teams that make the good stuff. ;(

I really hope someone picks up the Darksiders IP and the core team making it when THQ shuts down. Looks like Darksiders 2 is going to be pretty good and I'd really like to see more of that in the future. :(

That is a bugger, from what little (nay tiny) information I had about it Dark Millennium seemed interesting, even if it was an mmo. Too much to hope for that we could get a Dragon Age Origins style single game where we pick a race and class and have this big ass adventure. No, that is too much for. hell, when it comes to anything to do with Games Workshop and its universe, I tend to assume its all going to be awesome (like the Horus Heresy book series... jesus, I keep reading them but they are a long way off what I was hoping for) and get a little bummed out when they don't hit my expecations.

@iAmJohn: Yeah I guess maybe "never" was a tad hyperbolic.

There are a couple of times they mentioned about there being "no room for a sequel". It seemed that it was because they were stretched thin with the MMO and the rumoured new RTS they were supposedly making, but, I remember they were quite adamant that there wouldn't be, they didn't think it went as well as it could.

And, they see the Imperium Faction in the MMO was sufficient to be considered internally as the sequel.

Same. The layoffs are really, really unfortunate, but let's be honest, this MMO would have been fucking doomed even if they had scraped together enough cash to take it all the way. Now there's a chance (a slim chance, admittedly) that it will end up a viable thing.

Nooooooooooooo. I need a 3rd Darksiders! Let's all buy two copies each of Darksider 2!

I knew something bad was going on at Relic. They haven't announced a new game.

That couldn't have anything to do with, oh I don't know, the fact that they shipped a game in September? They aren't a huge studio, they can only release so many games at a time.

Honestly, I feel that this news is better than the result of a 40K MMO would have been. Making it a single player game means I'm far more likely to play it. They won't have to worry about ongoing server costs or competing with ToR or WoW. Its incredibly unfortunate that people had to be let go, but I can't see a future where a 40K MMO wouldn't have tanked incredibly hard.

Relic is working on Dawn of War III, last I checked. They haven't made a big reveal, but they've definitely announced it.

This is the worst news -- THE WORST! Was so looking forward to this game. I hope whatever Vigil ends up with at the end of all this is still an enjoyable experience, but I have my doubts that you can rejigger an MMO into a single-player game and have it end up all right without some major, major changes. Wouldn't it make more sense to try to scale it down to a PSO/Guild Wars sized "mmo"? Solo-friendly, heavily instanced, but with a lot of the MMO trappings intact and the ability to party up for more challenging content and PVP.

They put way too much money into Homefront which I thought shoudl've never been made with the horrible story it had.  These days, we need to at least be able to believe somewhat a story based in modern times.

I do say THQ took way too long to make a WH40k or just a WH game for at least the Xbox 360 and PC, it could of been a huge money maker if done mostly good.

mmos without a real triple A following can't survive. They all go free-to-play with micro trans after a year and everyone stops playing them. Publishers need to learn that if they want to create a real triple A mmo, they need a more established base than warhammer. Warhammer is awesome, but doesn't have the wide mainstream appeal that an mmo needs. That being said, Half Life mmo in 2051!
