Warhammer 40K MMO is No Longer a Warhammer 40K MMO, Layoffs Hit Relic and Vigil

There's probably going to be a day when we report happy THQ news. This isn't that day.

It's not that we enjoy talking about THQ's miseries, though you'd be forgiven for thinking so, given the general volume of rather lousy news we've reported on the publisher in the last several months. Today's news probably isn't going to help matters, but we swear, we hate reporting on this. It's just that this stuff keeps happening.

Imagine this, but less massively online.
Imagine this, but less massively online.

Today's woeful news comes surrounding THQ's former Warhammer MMO, Dark Millennium. At one point not too long ago, industry fixture Kevin Dent proclaimed the game dead on twitter, which got THQ PR into a tizzy of denials, claiming the game was still in the works, though eventually conceding that the company was seeking a partner to help finance and publish the game.

Now Dent's proclamations of doom have been proven partially right, as the game has been shifted to a more traditional "premium" single- and multiplayer game. Dark Millennium, the MMO, is dead. Long live Dark Millennium, the single-player-focused adventure, apparently. The new version of Millennium will include online multiplayer, but it shall be decidedly less massive than previously intended.

As if that news weren't troubling enough, THQ decided to put a particularly unpleasant tasting cherry on top of this whole shit sundae by also announcing over a hundred layoffs, split between Vigil Games and Relic Entertainment. 79 were let go from Vigil, while 39 were laid off at Relic.

The layoffs were perhaps inevitable, given the shift in Dark Millennium's direction. Still, this is just the latest volley of layoffs surrounding THQ products in a year's span that has already seen several bouts of this. 240 employees were let go back in February, while last June THQ shuttered Kaos Studios, the team behind Homefront, altogether.

MMOs are designed very differently than Single-player games. This is going to be a rough transition.

Link? Was it a sales thing? This is the first I've heard of this and I am NONE TOO PLEASED.

Did anyone really think this game was going come out? As an MMO, that is. Not to piss anyone off, but it would have failed. It would have quickly been turned into a free to play MMO and slowly dwindle in the charts of popularity/player count. MMO's, subscription wise, are a thing of the past. Too many have failed at this point, and the market for it has changed. As costs continue to go up, and as more and more players continue to keep their money in their pocket (most players would rather not pay for subscriptions) it's just not worth the risk. If the developer doesn't have the money to TRY and make a high end MMO (most developers do not), then in the end, it's not even worth the cost. They are better off creating this game, and others, in a single player/multi-player setting.

Yeah, that appeals to me more than an MMO to be honest. It could be a good thing in the long run?

Kinda with you guys. A 40K MMO sounds super rad but I'm not really an MMO guy so I'm not too upset about this.

Actually now this game is on my radar! Because MMO's are for shit... Its like they are turning a pack of crappy cigarretes into a cheeseburger.

I hope it reworks into a cool Single Player game. With a real end to it.

I'm not sure I'd eat a cheeseburger that used to be a pack of cigarettes, but you're welcome to try to change my mind. What condiments would be on this cigburger?

This is utter nonsense.

They're going to retool Vigil's MMO in to a single player action adventure instead of continuing Relic's already stellar Warhammer 40k action adventure!?

This is why you're falling apart, THQ. It's shit like this.

I feel obligated to go out and purchase every game THQ puts out in the future, just to try and support them.

Goddammit, I don't care what you put out, just give me a product and I'll give you money.

Layoffs are never a good thing, but I have to say that I'm more excited about Dark Millennium now that it's no longer going to be an MMO. Though I love pretty much everything about the Warhammer 40K universe, I don't think even that would have been enough to make me want to play an MMO.

Yup, they sure are going to ruin it with games like Dawn of War, all the expansions, Space Marine...

lol thank you. Those games were fucking awesome. Also, EA has done more damage than THQ ever will. WAR was pretty fucking good (or could have been with a few simple updates), but EA didn't give a fuck about that game and now we're left with the atrocity we have today.

mmos without a real triple A following can't survive. They all go free-to-play with micro trans after a year and everyone stops playing them. Publishers need to learn that if they want to create a real triple A mmo, they need a more established base than warhammer. Warhammer is awesome, but doesn't have the wide mainstream appeal that an mmo needs. That being said, Half Life mmo in 2051!

They put way too much money into Homefront which I thought shoudl've never been made with the horrible story it had.  These days, we need to at least be able to believe somewhat a story based in modern times.

I do say THQ took way too long to make a WH40k or just a WH game for at least the Xbox 360 and PC, it could of been a huge money maker if done mostly good.

This is the worst news -- THE WORST! Was so looking forward to this game. I hope whatever Vigil ends up with at the end of all this is still an enjoyable experience, but I have my doubts that you can rejigger an MMO into a single-player game and have it end up all right without some major, major changes. Wouldn't it make more sense to try to scale it down to a PSO/Guild Wars sized "mmo"? Solo-friendly, heavily instanced, but with a lot of the MMO trappings intact and the ability to party up for more challenging content and PVP.

Nooooooooooooo. I need a 3rd Darksiders! Let's all buy two copies each of Darksider 2!

I knew something bad was going on at Relic. They haven't announced a new game.

That couldn't have anything to do with, oh I don't know, the fact that they shipped a game in September? They aren't a huge studio, they can only release so many games at a time.

Honestly, I feel that this news is better than the result of a 40K MMO would have been. Making it a single player game means I'm far more likely to play it. They won't have to worry about ongoing server costs or competing with ToR or WoW. Its incredibly unfortunate that people had to be let go, but I can't see a future where a 40K MMO wouldn't have tanked incredibly hard.

Relic is working on Dawn of War III, last I checked. They haven't made a big reveal, but they've definitely announced it.

Obviously the layoffs part of this news is depressing, but I am personally very happy that Dark Millenium is becoming a single-player game. I am not a fan of MMOs, but I do really like the Warhammer 40k universe, so I am happy that I will get to play this game now.

Same. The layoffs are really, really unfortunate, but let's be honest, this MMO would have been fucking doomed even if they had scraped together enough cash to take it all the way. Now there's a chance (a slim chance, admittedly) that it will end up a viable thing.

Maybe they realised that an MMO probably wasn't the smartest place to throw their money at the moment considering the competition and soon to be announced competition.

@iAmJohn: Yeah I guess maybe "never" was a tad hyperbolic.

There are a couple of times they mentioned about there being "no room for a sequel". It seemed that it was because they were stretched thin with the MMO and the rumoured new RTS they were supposedly making, but, I remember they were quite adamant that there wouldn't be, they didn't think it went as well as it could.

And, they see the Imperium Faction in the MMO was sufficient to be considered internally as the sequel.

That is a bugger, from what little (nay tiny) information I had about it Dark Millennium seemed interesting, even if it was an mmo. Too much to hope for that we could get a Dragon Age Origins style single game where we pick a race and class and have this big ass adventure. No, that is too much for. hell, when it comes to anything to do with Games Workshop and its universe, I tend to assume its all going to be awesome (like the Horus Heresy book series... jesus, I keep reading them but they are a long way off what I was hoping for) and get a little bummed out when they don't hit my expecations.
