Waste Your Weekend With Auditorium

Flash-based browser games are a dime a dozen, but this one's actually got something special going on.

Pretty, shiny...
Pretty, shiny...
This weird Flash puzzle game Auditorium has been making the rounds on gaming message boards all week. I'd been avoiding it since I saw it described as "like Electroplankton," because, really, that's not the way to get anyone to play anything. But a friend urged me to check it out today, and what do you know? It's pretty awesome.

It's a simple puzzle game where you direct a flow of little sparklies into a group of goal points. You have a predetermined number of resizable pathing modules that let you redirect the flow, and each goal fills up as you expose it to the stream. But the goals will deplete, so you have to find a way to hit all of them simultaneously. Allow me to stop describing it now so you can go try it for yourself.

The dynamically layered music is what makes Auditorium so pleasing to me. There's some percussion, or piano, or whatever, associated with each goal point, and that track only plays while the goal is being stimulated by the flow. So when you satisfy multiple goals at once, you hear pretty things. Maybe I'm just a sucker for this stuff; music that chimes in piecemeal, in correspondence to your actions, really tickles me in a special place. A special place in my heart, you perv.

Anyway, don't believe the headline. You won't actually be wasting more than an hour or two with the game, since there are only three acts with a handful of quick levels each. But the developers--a group called CipherPrime--are soliciting donations that are fueling work on a full game with at least 20 acts. They also mention your donations could help them get the game onto the iPhone or consoles. This would be great on the iPhone, because it plays quick and touch controls would really suit it.

Try the game and post what you think. Could Auditorium be next year's flOw?
