Watch The Whole Darn Final Fantasy XIII Demo Right Now

Who needs to import games from Japan when we have YouTube?

If you haven't heard, the new Blu-Ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is on the streets in Japan. Why should you care about the umpteenth version of a movie that originally came out almost four years ago? Because it comes with a playable PlayStation 3 demo version of Final Fantasy XIII, silly. Faster than we could even import a copy of the demo, some intrepid YouTube user has posted high-quality footage of the entire thing in five parts.

Here's a choice installment, where you can see cutscenes, combat, and running-around-in-the-overworld. You know, all the parts of your balanced JRPG breakfast!

This is the latest in a long line of Final Fantasy demos being packed in with other products Square wants to sell en masse. I remember running to the store as fast as possible and buying Tobal No. 1 just to get my hands on the FFVII demo disc contained therein (and then being pleasantly surprised that I'd gotten a pretty sweet fighting game in the process). Maybe I'm just old and jaded, but that rabid excitement for new Final Fantasy games burned itself out sometime after FFX. I still want to play XIII, but for the time being, I'm happy looking at this demo from afar.

If you want to see the whole 45-minute demo, just start at the beginning. Fair warning: The videos may get pulled at any moment, so you're better off watching them sooner than later.

Do the mechanized soldier-dudes look like Helghast to anyone else? That aside, I'm excited. I've been excited for every FF since 8, and haven't been disappointed. Mostly. 12 and X-2 weren't my favorites, and FF11 was average at best.

Pros:

  • Battle transitions.
  • Graphics.

Cons:
  • No levels or XP.
  • No MP -- the timer is the only limiting factor.
  • Terrible music.
  • Overblown, crappy, anime cinematics.
  • Silly, rehashed, story.
  • Fails at humor.

It's not looking good to me. The only FF I dislike if FF12. I can't say without playing it really, but I suspect I might be adding FF13 to that list -- albeit for totally different reasons. Where did it all go wrong?

"I can't help but feel that the game would be infinitely better if the fighting engine is akin to that of the kingdom hearts series..."    No, that would just make the game infinitely more button mashy and shitty.

Dude, this is more proof than ever that Final Fantasy just does not play anymore in North America.  It's an irrelevant 90s series still trying to hang with the current top dogs like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect

Looks pretty cool. I had a period where I no longer played JRPGS but I got The Last Remnant on steam and now I'm back on board. I'm excited to check this out.

I love the Final Fantasy games and been playing them since FF7 ( never played FF 1-6 because I didn't even know they existed back then, never played FF11 because I hate MMOs ). Nonetheless, I remember buying the Playstation One just to play FF7 and nearly dropped out of college because I couldn't stop playing long enough to go to class. That game was so addicting!  LOL!

FF13 looks stunning, the character models look awesome ( Lightening, Oerba, Sazh, and Snow ) , and the cinematics are absolutely beautiful, as always.  Battle transitions are very quick, I love it!  Kool music too!  Let's hope the story is as epic in scale.  I'm so glad Squenix didn't fill the game with annoying teen or pre-teen brats like most JRPG developers do (Blue Dragon, Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, etc. Yuck!).  I am just too old for that shit.

The battles seem too much like FF12, which I found disappointing.  Don't get me wrong, FF12 was a decent enough game and sure, the gambit system used for controlling the AI was pretty sweet and has great potential with further refinement.  I just didn't like the boring battle system, that's all, and the license board sucked.  Bring back the Sphere Grid!  I guess I prefer the strategic old school pre-FFXI way of doing things.  Also, there's too much crap on the screen during the battles.  You would think video game developers would learn to tidy up or strategically place their UI elements so that they do not obstruct the gamers view of the action.  Well, that's my two cents.  I'm still buying FF13, I'll just have to grit my teeth and bear the disappointing combat mechanics, so I can enjoy everything else about the game.

I wonder who they will get for English voice actors?  Any guesses or hopes?  I would like Jennifer Hale for Lightening and maybe Tara Strong for Oerba.  Hedy Burress is a great voice actor, too!

After battle, does their HP regenerate fully?  It seems like it does.   That was one thing in The Last Remnant that I thought was a great idea.  I hate having to replenish after every round.   This game looks great!!!

"Yep, that's an RPG.  I don't really hold Final Fantasy above any other RPG coming out these days.  Which is good, because it's as generic as the rest of them.  I'll wait for the hook to make me choose this one over anything else, but right now just saying "It's Final Fantasy" isn't doing it.

Especially considering the huge development time on this one.  After so much investment, seeing so little improvement in this vid just ... isn't doing anything for me.  I honestly get more out of tri-Ace's offerings than I do the big S-E machine these days.

Also, can we get rid of Nomura and his lazy, recycled designs?  Especially the main character.  It's getting old really fast.  But that's just me, I think."

I Totally agree with this statement! FFXIII Has not sold me yet... why turnbased?...why?.. FFXII was a step in the right direction when they did away with cutting to another screen. if they just refined it by implementing a more action based button press direct action combat system I would have been happy...

Well, the presentation of the combat is nowhere near the stuff that was in the target renders. Not surprised, but you know, dang.

Well, so far I don't know. I wasn't really impressed by the video. The battles look cool, some sort of a cross between Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy XII, which could turn out well. Having a hard time dealing with the lack of Levelling up or XP, I mean, this game IS an RPG, what elements of it are going to make it an RPG? I don't get the complaining about going to a separate screen for battles, it's been a part of the series for a very long time. The only thing that really worries me about it is that battles could end up tedious like they did in Okami for me. The transition never felt natural in that game.

One problem I have is that it almost seems too much like Final Fantasy VII. Oppressive upper city, depressed lower city, citizens organizing to fight... I know Lightning is supposed to be the "female Cloud," but don't overdo it.
The other problem I'm having is that Square is really beginning the whole "Fantasy" thing. This isn't Fantasy anymore, it's science fiction. It's not even that Final Fantasy trademark fusion of fantasy with steampunk and sci fi. I can deal with labelling fantasy/steampunk fusions as fantasy, but I think the only thing in this game reminiscent of fantasy is a sword. Final Fantasy VIII really pushed the boundaries, but the world was unique enough that I didn't really give it a second thought. This, on the other hand, isn't fantasy one bit.
I guess my complaint isn't that the game doesn't resemble a fantasy world, it's more that it lacks that Final Fantasy charm of a world that can't truly be labelled as fantasy, it's a realm of its own. I just don't see that with this game, it's just lacking that personality thats linked the previous games together.
I don't think it will be a bad game by any means, I'm just not sure at this point. I'm also not really sure about the whole Final Fantasy XIII as a series of its own. That's really kind of stupid, to be quite honest. If Square wanted this game to be a new franchise, give it another title. Don't slap the FF name on just becuase you can, as was the case with XI. Well, I'll just wait and see, but I won't be officially sold until I see someone riding a chocobo with that trademark music playing in the background (baby moogle pet aint going to cut it), as well as a moogle or two.
Oh, and does anyone else find it completely idiotic that your espers/GFs/eidolons/Jinn turn into vehicles? A Shiva motorcycle? That's just stupid. GFs making your memory disappear in VIII was dumb, but turning into vehicles? whatever.

I'm gonna have to agree with BoG, especially the point about it being a science-ficition more than a fantasy. It feels as though Square-Enix is trying to force futuristic settings as the next big thing for RPGs, when that really isn't the case. Sure, it's cool if you can take a futuristic setting and still make it a fantasy, but that isn't what FFXIII's doing.

Right now, the main thing that impressed me was the music. The battle music sounds really symphonic towards the middle, which is nice.

Im less interested in this game now. The graphics look bland and boring (no matter how technically good they made be) and it looks like they have given up on the FFXII gameplay. I may be one of the few people who like the FFXII gameplay but I liked it a lot more than the turn based system which for is completely played out. Going back even with some modifications just feels "old". Maybe ill get it at some point but for me the name "Final Fantasy" holds nothing, its new always new characters and new storys, the only thing that stays is the (for the most part) the "gameplay" and names of things but for me I can get that gameplay anywhere and dont care what the airship pilot is called or whether I have magic or magika or anything like that.

I kinda like the new use of the ATB gauge. It sorta blends Chrono Cross and FF mechanics from past. Just from looking at it she had four attack options. The one with the 3 next to it takes 3 attack slots and requires a full ATB gauge to use. The others can be mixed and matched and used with full gauge for a combo or in one or two piece chunks for quicker attacks. I could see some decent strategy coming out of that potentially.

No way you just spoke down about Sakimoto's score in FFXII. That man's musical scores have all been excellent, and I really have a hard time believing you didn't like XII. Care to enlighten me?
