We Can (Soon) Play Handhelds for an Entire Flight

Praise the sun.

No Caption Provided

Assuming your 3DS or Vita battery can last, the Federal Aviation Administration has announced passengers will soon be able to power their electronic devices gate-to-gate.

Due to concerns about signal interference, passengers have been asked to switch off their devices, be they gaming or otherwise, while the plane was taking off or landing.

Airlines must reportedly demonstrate devices will have no impact on their flight electronics before the rule change is applied, but it’s expected these changes will roll out universally by the end of 2013.

This will serve me well for catchin’ Pokemon on a flight I’ve got coming up soon.

I saw this thing on plane crashes and they said the real reason why you can't use electronic devices on landing or takeoff is that in the event of a crash those objects can act like projectiles. Imagine having a 3DS XL smacking you in the face

In the event of a crash I would be more concerned with all of my limbs detaching from my body and then going on fire.

"Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways wasted no time announcing Thursday morning that both airlines have filed plans with the FAA to allow for use of approved electronic devices below 10,000 feet on their flights. Both carriers had representatives on the FAA advisory panel."

Haha, I had skimmed this somewhere else on the internet, and couldn't help think it's funny how Patrick associated this piece of news with video-games enough to put it up as an article on the site.

Yeah this is pretty great news.

This is fantastic news. Shame I don't fly as much any more, but it'll be cool when I do.

Also: go catch them Pokémons, Scoops! =]

I dunno, I always kind of liked that there was still one reason out there to force people's faces off their screens for a moment or two - even if it is in a shitty situation like air travel.

Does this include like an iPhone on airplane mode or an MP3 player? Because I'm tired of having to discreetly listen to music during takeoff/landing.

It's great news, though when you say "universally", you mean "nationally" in US, right? Still wondering how long it'd take EU to sort their shit.

There never was a reason to power them down, flight attendants just get off on the power trip.

Multiple professional pilots have told me this has nothing to do with interference. Takeoff and landing are the most dangerous times of a flight and they want your attention in case shit goes sideways.

I really can't imagine if shit goes sideways in either of those cases there's anything the passengers can do (if they would even know what to do) with the extra several seconds (if that) reaction time they might gain by not using an electronic device.

I really don't see the problem with turning off and on devices for landing. I hate flying and wouldn't even dream of doing ANYTHING when taking off, let alone looking down at a screen.

So were people really that bothered by having to not use their devices during take-off and landing? I mean if you're taking any sort of substantial trip you still have a good 5-8 hours of dead air time when you're cruising to your destination.

Landing and taking off are the best parts of the trip though. When you can look outside and see the land recede or get closer. And closer. And closer. Wow that's... fast too fast oh my god oh my god

The only reason, that I've heard, they make you turn off your devices is so you'll pay attention to the instructions about the oxygen mask and flotation devices. I believe it's already been proven phones and such do not effect the plane's electronics at all.

You know what this means? It means no more snarky comments from people sitting beside you saying "haha my magazine does't need batteries!" whenever I'm told to put my Kindle away.

This'll be nice. I'm always terrified during takeoff and landing, so anything extra I can use to further distract me from reality could help me a lot.

Unless you have way of extending battery life it doesn't change a lot I'd rather have that half an hour of juice on flight than when I'm sat waiting for every else to board. I've never really looked if there are any generic battery packs that are used for phones etc...that can also accommodate DS' and vitas.

Umm, bit of a misuse of the Dark Souls meme there, Klepek.
