Welcome to the #molyjam2012

What started as a joke has become a big, wonderful, super crazy thing.

No Caption Provided
Will Molyneux himself make an appearance? That's a good question. A really good question.
Will Molyneux himself make an appearance? That's a good question. A really good question.

Double Fine gameplay programmer Anna Kipnis jokingly tweeted on Tuesday that it’s crazy no one has organized a game jam based on the ideas of faux Peter Molyneux Twitter account @petermolydeux.

In response, I asked the world to make it happen. Kipnis told me I should make it happen. Then, Chris Remo of Idle Thumbs said he wanted to make this happen. We all thought it should happen.

So, it’s happening.

Starting on the evening of March 30 (Friday) until the evening of April 1 (Sunday), San Francisco, New York, Melbourne, Brighton and other locations will participate in a 48-hour game jam themed around the preposterous, hilarious ideas from @petermolydeux.

The game jam is officially called What Would Molydeux?, and has a constantly evolving, updating website at www.whatwouldmolydeux.com. If it’s broken, that’s because we’re trying to fix it!

A game jam is where a bunch of artists, programmers, designers, musicians and others come together to produce a video game in a very, very short period of time. I’m helping organize this game jam alongside Kipnis, Remo, Game Developer Magazine’s Brandon Sheffield, and many others around the world. The only reason this is happening is because so many people are working so hard together, and this dumb joke has turned into something amazing.

And if you’re somehow unaware, @petermolydeux is a hilarious parody of Molyneux and his often grandiose game ideas. Even though some of the mystery has been lifted, it’s still totally hilarious.

The biggest game jam is happening around San Francisco, but there are satellite game jams in Melbourne, Brighton, New York City, Seattle, London, Los Angeles, Montreal, and more are being added every day. If you want to put together your own local game jam, keep watching the website, as there's a FAQ that's being continually updated with details. We don’t want anyone to feel excluded, and you don’t need to be near a big city to participate.

Small plans have become big plans, and those plans keep getting bigger. I can’t share them all...yet. There is much more to come. Since I’m part of the team, you can assume Giant Bomb will be there, too. Somehow, anyway. I’m only vague because so much of this is being invented on-the-fly, and we’re nailing down logistics day by day.

Also, I've had the Space Jam music in my head the whole time I wrote this. #molyjam2012, everybody!

I expect they'll have the information once they've finalised it (which will hopefully be before the 7pm local start time, but these things are basically built on goodwill and community spirit* so it's all a bit of fun and you shouldn't expect unicorns flowing out of your screen if you decide to try and tune in).

* With a bit of 'if we give out free demo codes or trial/basic editions of our tools maybe we can sell some extra units next week' from some groups, but as they're normally the awesome teams who dedicate a lot of work to making the stuff they give out for free (basic editions, training and tutorials, open dialogue with everyone interested) that's a lot less sinister than the cynical might view it.

Has the identity of the person behind the Peter Molydeux account ever been revealed?

I'll be at the #molyjam2012 in Santa Monica. Anyone else going to this site for the jam? I'd love to meet other duders from the GB community there!

Also, raspberry jam is my favorite.

@steve86uk: I know it's crazy. I was just looking through the comments to see if anyone actually mentioned Capone. I quite like that he's one of the only people to edit his page and there's no mention of twitter. I'm not doing it, I like that there's no info.

People should listen to some of his old Joypod features.

If I had the Space Jam theme in my head then I would rapidly find a way to get it out. I would use a screw driver if necessary. And I don't mean the kind with orange juice and vodka, although that might work too and have considerably less tragic results.

Hey, how's this for a #molyjam2012 tagline?

This is the first I ever heard of a game jam, though I'm skeptical that anything tangible can come out of this other than drunk game developers, I'll be following this.

I don't get all the love and/or high praise for Molyneux? All I know of him is Fable and to be honest it's far from impressive IMO.

He made Populous, which was huge in the '90s and one of my personal favorites. He's also a very funny speaker (I saw him at the GDC last year). I've never even played a Fable game, but I really like Mr. Molyneux.

This. Also before Fable he was directly responsible for a lot of great games with varying degrees of innovation. Fable may not have lived up to all the hype, but its far from a bad game, in fact it's a pretty good one. I personally thought that Fable II was a great game, sans the ending, and I fondly remember playing through the co-op with my girlfriend and having a blast. But besides all that, Peter's just a good, down to earth dude.

The fact that you were a part of the reason this came to fruition is just awesome. If it's a big April Fools' joke, it is still awesome, but you're a crafty leprechaun.

It's not amazing until it WAS amazing, damnit.

I'm into the idea, but a bunch of journos throwing a dev jam and expecting everyone to turn up to the party because they thought a particular brand of joke was funny strikes me as kind of stupid.

I'm glad the term game jam has been explained. I thought it was a big competition where people tried to out pitch each other with Molyneuxesque ideas for games, like a rap battle.

Man Space Jam is awesome.
