We're Getting a LEGO Marvel Game, Even Though We Probably Shouldn't Be Getting One of Those

Warner Bros. has swallowed its pride and also probably a lot of money to produce LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.

No Caption Provided

Here's something that I doubt anyone expected to happen. Today, LEGO video game publisher WB Games has announced LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, a blocky, kid-friendly take on the Marvel Comics universe, featuring all the heroes and villains you've seen on screen so regularly over these last several years, except made out of blocks.

Why is that weird? Well, for starters, WBI's parent company also owns DC Comics, otherwise known as Marvel's chief rival over, like, all of the decades they've coexisted. So, basically, this is all very peculiar.

But hey, at least it's positive peculiar, right? If nothing else, it just goes to show that with the right amount of money, heart, money, determination, and also money, no LEGO adaptation is impossible.

This particular adaptation, by the way, features an original story with Thor, the Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and a host of others as they attempt to thwart foes like Loki and Galactus. It, like most LEGO games, is coming to myriad different platforms, including...*deep breath*...the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, the PC, the Wii U, the DS, the 3DS, and the PlayStation Vita. Maybe even other platforms, if we get more platform announcements this year.

I'm totally in. The question is can I hold out till Christmas so my son doesn't feel like even more of a spoiled brat? It's hard to not spoil your kid when you have so much in common.

I guess I should also be concerned that I have so much in common with a five year old.

: Dialogue or not the LEGO games are quite a bit of fun whether you're one of the people who like or not. I've been wanting to snag LEGO LOTR too and I've heard mixed feelings on the whole dialogue argument but either way it's still LEGO and thus still just simple fun. LEGO games let you turn off your brain and just play a game for the sake of playing.

This doesn't seem that unusual given that there have also been LEGO Star Wars games long before any of the DC properties, and Disney now owns both the Marvel and Star Wars IPs. I wonder what the ties are between Disney and Warner Bros.?

LEGO Lord of the Rings is fucking great. Probably the best LOTR game I've ever played. So I'm all over this.

Is it? I've been thinking about grabbing my first LEGO game, but wasn't sure about how the abbreviated dialogue from the movies would work.

I don't think LoTR was as good as Lego Batman 2, it suffers from the levels having to be structured around events from the movies. The dialogue is fine, but it was again done better in Lego Batman 2, where they had completely original voice overs. Batman's attitude towards Superman was especially hilarious. Kids can laugh at the funny lines, but it was quality voice work with a lot of adult humour there too. I can't imagine going back to a Lego game without dialogue now.

It's weird to me that people are whining about there being too many Lego games. There's always going to be properties worth exploiting, there's always going to be children wanting to play Lego video games, and there's always going to be money to be made.

DC and Marvel have collaborated a few times over the years, so it's actually not that unusual.

@crithon: When voices were first introduced the developers said that all LEGO games going forward would be voiced. This was a result the talkless humor being lost on children, ie their target demo. They held focus groups (which are always a good idea) with various children and when asked what their least favorite part(s) of the LEGO games were it was the fact that the characters didn't speak. Now as a result of that all LEGO games will be voiced.

I'm pretty sure the guys all talked about it briefly on the Bombcast (or maybe it was a Quick Look) at some point.

Lego Lord of the Rings kicks way more ass than it has any right to, and so do the Star Wars and Harry Potter games. Honestly, I found myself forgetting it was a Lego game just got really immersed in the LOTR story again.

In large corporations, such as this, the branches (publishing, creative etc) often operate 100% independently. Within the movie/TV departments, it is pretty regular that the production teams are bidding with other production teams from rival companies for IP created by their own company's creative departments. It makes sense- if any other company is willing to pay more than you'd pay to publish, you are effectively getting paid by another company and freeing up your production team to work on another project.

I feel the exact opposite. I think Batman 2 worked a lot better, because they were free to come up with their own levels and story. A lot of the movie based games really struggle to make interesting levels out of the events of the films, it only really worked in the original Star Wars game.. Probably because the prequels were designed as massive videogames/toy cash grabs.

Just for the record, this isn't by far the most bizarre Marvel and DC interaction. Not only was there a JLA versus Avengers comic crossover, but for a while there was a comic book line called Amalgam in which both sets of characters coexisted on the same universe and interacted with each other.

So hey, 7/10 in the awkward frenemy meter for these two companies.

Been anticipating this since the Sam Raimi films came out. Spider-Man was the first license I remember them having, and it was a HUGE deal back in the day. This'll hopefully satisfy anyone who was bummed Spidey wasn't in The Avengers film for legal reasons.

Bring on more Avengers Assemble...Literally and LEGO Legolas jokes. I never get tired of them.

Huh. I hadn't even thought about the fact that WBI had to be publishing this. I just saw "Marvel LEGO Game" and thought "naturally". I wonder how the licensing works with all of those characters with Activision and Sega and things, or if Disney Interactive got all of the video game rights to those characters back after the Marvel purchase... Doesn't really matter, but that kind of business stuff I always find interesting.

Anyway, LEGO Batman was my favorite LEGO game, so LEGO Avengers seems like something I'd probably enjoy as well.

It's not weird or peculiar at all. Lego Marvel Game = Money. WB and Disney like money. The competition between the two brands does not mean that their respective owners would pass up an opportunity to make said money. Also, WB has used Disney IP on at least two of these games already (Indiana Jones and Pirates).

EDIT: Yeah, I see that I'm way late to the party on this.
