What Happened While Playing Prototype

Maybe Nintendo's onto something with this whole wrist strap thing.

I've always suspected that this console generation's complete lack of wired controllers was going to come back around and bite me at some point--and while I was trying to get Prototype reviewed on a deadline last week, it did. As I wrote in the review, the game can get pretty darn frustrating from time to time. You'll occasionally have so many tanks, helicopters, and burly mutants bearing down on you that the only viable way to survive is to peel off, go heal in a hidden place, then come back and return to your objective.

When you're trying to get a game finished expeditiously in this line of work, though, you sometimes don't have the option of slowing down and withdrawing for a bit (and forget about turning the game off to take a break outright). I foolishly kept banging my head against the same tough mission over and over, until... it is with some shame that I admit I let the frustration get to me and hurled my controller at the (thankfully carpeted) floor, resulting in this:

No Caption Provided
OK, maybe the picture is anti-climactic since there's not a lot of damage to the controller itself; you can see a bit of the red plastic chipped off on the left , and there's some separation between the red and black parts that some work with a Torx screwdriver may or may not fix. The controller still works fine.

It's my pride that took the real beating, the embarrassment of having lost my temper and expressing it in such a childish way. This is the most damage I've ever caused to a piece of hardware due to video game rage in nearly 25 years of playing them. (Seems like there should be a clever word to describe "anger at difficult video games." Any ideas?)

Anyway, I can't help wondering if I'm not the only one. How angry do difficult games make you? Are you in the habit of taking it out on your stuff? What do you do to cool off? If you have photos of any broken controllers or other casualties, I'd love to see them.

I never expressed my rage on the expensive equipment. My rage usually gets me to punch my sofa (it works, most of the times at least). When i'm in god-rage-mode i usually just punch my closed, witch, as you may imagine, results in some heavy pain in my hand reminding me that i should just stop and take a break (and some ice).

I dont get frustrated that much to this point though. I think it has only happened in Fighting games, wich i dont play that often (guess why :P).

With other genres i mostly get "sad" when things are not working for me or how i think they should work. Take Far Cry 2 for example, i love that game so much but the supid, stupid design choices make it unplayable for me.

I remember wen i was playing soul caliber IV i was going up the final stages in the tower, which were so frustratingly hard because the conditions made it almost impossible to win. i tried so many times that i ended up punching my couch and after a while the wood in the arm broke =/ so after that i cooled down and took a break, and to this day no one has realized the broken arm yet......

My keyboard has taken many hits caused by gamer rage. The way the keys fly out is very satisfying, and it does give you some time to cool down while searching for the pieces.

Yeah...I twisted apart my PS2 controller over a certain puzzle in Okami that I was stuck on for an hour. I almost did that to my 360 controller when I kept losing to Seth...alot.

I destroyed my Xbox head set by throwing it at the wall when CoD was being very unkind with a series of brutal spawns. I've also punched a guitar controller, but if I get frustrated enough to throw/hit I grab something nearby that isn't electronic.

I've tossed a controller hundreds of times, but I always aim for the pillow on the other end of the couch. Those things cost to damn much to go out and buy new ones like back in the NES days.

I flipped a table in my living room once after failing freebird on the very last note on expert  - i kicked that table so hard it flipped and landed upside down, smashing the glass-top, and all the stuff stored on top of it - i was instantly embarrased

You call THAT controller rage?! Brad, if that's your idea of controller rage, you really are the most mellow person I've ever met. I caused an Xbox 360 R Bumper to cease functioning in one of my milder controller rages.

Prototype got me fuming as I bashed my head against the wall  time and time again in the last boss fight. Fortunately when I threw my controller it was at a nice soft couch. And then I played some Flower to calm down .

Bruised knuckles/fingers from punching the ground or other solid object nearby, but nothing particularly serious. I've done the controller drop, but it's usually onto the couch or a pillow or something. I've gotten pretty good at detecting when I'm about to break, and I usually change games or do something else just before I freak out.

My PC likes to randomly crash and blue screen for no good reason when playing games. So I devoted a day to try and get the thing to behave. After some time I ultimately formatted and installed nothing but display drivers and The Sims 3. Then it crashed.

Then this happened.
Then this happened.

You should see the 360 controller I'm currently using; held together by one or two screws and some mangled plastic. At least that one works, unlike my wireless controller with half a thumb stick missing that can't run off a battery pack. Such a horrible curse is the nerd rage.

Hmm, haven't gotten that angry over a game in a long time. Lets see...usually if i get angry i just shout explicatives. If i get really angry, then i may hit the arm-rest of my sofa...i think i have actually thrown the controller, not the floor mind you, but instead onto the sofa across from me.

I don't think I've come close to throwing a controller or smashing my keyboard, but if something starts not going right repeatedly, I just stop playing that. Or sometimes I do feel a good kind of rage, the kind that makes you play harder. In a way that I enjoy myself.

I used to throw and break every single controller due to Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and other frustrating games back in the Genesis Era. Now I really try to hold back my anger and try not to break my controllers. Although I have thrown several game cases and one hit a really nice poster on my wall and tore it up. I regret this...

I used to destroy controllers quite often until the current gen hit. Controllers are freaking expensive nowadays. Now I just yell and swear. The last ones I smashed were (malfunctioning) guitar controllers like a year ago. I still get very tempted to break shit but the sad state of my wallet brings me back down to reality.

I broke a mouse once, and then I decided never to expend physical aggression on something I value and would have to pay to replace.  The best thing to do is to walk away from it, take your mind off it, and come back with fresh eyes.  Seeing that you had a deadline and no time for that.  I usually just express to myself how much of a jerk the designer who decided to go in that direction with the difficulty is.  I stopped playing GTA 4 on one mission, decided that was when I stopped even liking the game, and haven't touched it since.  Though my situation is quite different, I am a graduate student with limited gaming time, so I am not going to waste it being frustrated constantly, that's what bullshit strategic management professors are for.

I punch my couch sometimes throw my controller, but I'm afraid to break it, but luckly 360 controllers are bricks, and yea - pretty much just wail on stuff, and cry inside

That's why I hate difficult games, everything takes a beating - including my ego

I used to suffer from this affliction pretty badly, but as I put on the years and had to start buying the hardware myself, I don't let it get to me. I play games to have fun, so as soon as a game starts to even hint at the potential of not-fun frustration, I shut it off and don't touch it for a few days.

Some frustration is good frustration and if the game is fun, you battle through it without getting too angry. But some games just put you up against too much, laugh in your face, punch you in the gut, and tip over your juice box. When I play the latter, I just take a deep breath and shut it off. There are better things to do with your time than get pissed at a video game. Plus, when you cool off and come back to it, more often than not you are able to push through to the next section.

It's weird how that works.

Rugby 2000 for the PS2  is the most infuriating game I have ever played, mostly because it was poorly made with frustrating controls. I used to scream at the television for hours while I played it . My parents couldn't understand why I'd bother playing it if it pissed me off so much. It boils my blood just thinking about it.

But the worst incident for me was FIFA World Cup 1998, playing against my brother. He scored an arsey goal and held the controller by the cord and just slammed the controller repeatedly against the floor until it was smashed to bits.

We then calmly got up, went to the video game store and bought a new one - and never really talked about it again.

I've been told I was a angry wee little lad at one point. I honestly can't recall ever being that angry as a child and considering my gaming was restrained to only a few hours a week I wouldn't be able to recall.

The only gamer rage I've ever expressed was about 2 years back when I picked up DOA4. Being the game that DOA4 is, I found myself inexplicably stuck on one stage (the opponent was of military origin apparently) with the opponent spamming the same move over and over. AND OVER. Then I snapped. I threw my controller all the way across the room where it abruptly smashed into the mantle piece. I sat there for a second breathing heavily staring at the screen with the intent of a man looking for blood. I finally got up and retrieved my abused hardware at which point I noticed that it was off. I turned it back on and it said the battery was low. I charged it. 3 minutes later it once again says the battery is low. To this day that controller goes wonky with it's power readings...so I've kept it as my 3rd controller which comes in very handy when I'm playing competitive local multiplayer with someone.

"WTF, my controller just died."

In RE5, trying to get an A on the mine level in the mercenaries mode drove me to punch my TV  because that stupid bug creature always kept grabbing me and killing me instantly.  (It's an old one, so it's a little sturdier)  I still hate those fucking bugs.

Hmm, I'm not sure ragequitting is truly evocative of this. There needs to be something with a bit more of a reference to controller, or pad, or sixaxxis or whatever the microsoft ones are called. Nintendo owners could potentially fall foul of the old 'nun-chuck' (sorry), but I'm not sure about the Sony and Microsoft heads amongst us. What about "and I got so mad, I wireless yo-yoed the controller across the room"?

Someone told me recently there are now officially over 1million words in the English language, clearly not enough (and I bet ragequit isn't in there yet either).

I still REALLY want to play both [PROTOTYPE] and inFamous anyway. I'm so behind on my gaming - I just finished Dead Space at the weekend, and then just finally got around to installing Bioshock, then I've got Killzone 2 to start, but before I do that I bet the Fallout 3 dlc starts to hit PSN. And I just bought FFVII, which is still awesome actually, I was kind of nervous about replaying it after all this time - it was the first rpg I actually played to completion, and I was concerned it wouldn't beat the test of time. But it does that and then some.

I remember trying to finish Call of Duty 3 on veteran pissed me off so much.  I was stuck on the part where you cross a road to the forrested area and there are nazis all over the place and the next save point were so far away, i would get to the bunker and get shot dead, or when i finally got to the mortar, it was so hard because there was no instructions!
Then all the old hard ass SNES and NES games pissed me off but I was just a kid.
Also some battles in mass effect where it just seemed like i could do nothing and was getting my ass whipped.

@FluffyNutSatchel:

Seriously, under the circumstances I think you'd have been justified in throwing the dog at the controller.

Reminds me of playing FFVIII. I was something like 40hrs into the story then bought a magazine with a memory card as a free gift. Copied my save across from my existing (and very crowded) card. I STUPIDLY deleted the original data before I worked out that the covermount memory card didn't actually even work. Oh dear. I couldn't face re-starting the game over again. Everyone has to have one I suppose...

Dude I've thrown my 360 controller so many times I can split it in half on command (still works though). Also, the arcade stick gets a really stern double-axe handle smash from my fists when I get uber pissed.

The door down here has taken more punishment as I've put several cracks in it punching, kicking, and throwing random objects I grab at it.

When I'm playing MLB 09: The Show, I sometimes slam my controller down on the carpet when I strike out, coincidentally mimicking my character slamming his bat on the ground. Sometimes when you got 0-for-4 in a game, three games in a row, you get a little angry.

It's ok Brad. We all wind up in the tosser camp from time to time. I know I do. Usually I just curse like a sailor, but if a game is really difficult and frustrating and pushes me to the breaking point I too am known to indulge in the occasional controller toss, though it is usually at the wall, or my nice clean hardwood floor...
