What's This X-Wing Buzz All About?

LucasArts is teasing some sort of resurgence for its hallowed Star Wars flight combat games. But what's going on exactly?

Don't call it a comeback (yet).
Don't call it a comeback (yet).
Now that the Monkey Island series is enjoying all kinds of new popularity, and several of LucasArts' other hallowed old properties are back in action, it's time to start asking about the LucasArts games that really matter: X-Wing and TIE Fighter. G4's Patrick Klepek did just that, starting all kinds of trouble this morning by inquiring of the company's president, Darrell Rodriguez.

I asked Rodriguez for thoughts on a return of the company's lauded X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim series. His answer?

"We don’t have any announcements now, but stay tuned," said Rodriguez. "We will soon….."

By the way, that's his number of dots, not mine. We conducted the interview over e-mail. Five dots is far more mysterious than three dots, so I'm willing to bet I'm onto something here. Whether it's a full-on remake ala The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition or an addition to the company's growing Steam lineup…well, who cares? Either one would be the first acknowledgement of a major part of LucasArts' legacy in a long, long time.

Let's examine a list of possibilities Rodriguez might be referring to, in order of descending likelihood.

  1. Steam rerelease
  2. Steam and Xbox Live Arcade rereleases
  3. Rereleases with some kind of enhanced graphics and/or reworked controls
  4. An actual, new, honest-to-goodness X-Wing game

Number 1 is practically a given, considering the success Lucas seems to have been having putting its other games on Steam. Anything beyond that and I'm not holding my breath. As much as I'd like to think a brand new X-Wing might be on the way (and might be good), you didn't hear anyone getting particularly excited about the last project from Larry Holland and Totally Games, Alien Syndrome. On the other hand, I don't think I'd trust anyone else with a new X-Wing game.

Let's put on our wait-and-see hats, shall we? In the meantime, what would you want to see if X-Wing were to come back all proper-like?

Yeah, well I'm 2 years after you, how do you think I feel!

But, with recent Sol: Exodus quicklooks and stuff, and Tested doing Star Wars lego, and me building an X-WIng this saturday, ALL I can think of thios morning seems to be "Tie Fighter, Tie Fighter, Tie Fighter" because that thing was amazing. Let me max out the speed on an interceptor and go roaring!

I had about the same feeling, but replacing Tie Fighter with Freespace. It's a bit too early in the year for my yearly Freespace 1/2 playthrough tho.

SOL: Exodus controlled too wonky and just didn't do it for me at all :(

Did you try Evochron Mercenary any? That game has future potential if the guy who built it would flesh out the story more.

Haven't yet, should try and watch the quick look when I get the time and then go from there. If it's similar to Privateer and more understandable than X3 seemed to be, then that could be pretty great.

Let us over analyze those two extra dots with out TV CSI technology and zoom right in to see what secret messages lay between the pixils!

The whole Star Wars flight sim added to steam; i'd buy the collection in a heart beat.

A remake with better graphics to the series; even more buy-ing-ish extra good...style......deluxe

A whole new game would be great as well, i liked X-wing Alliance and i'm still disappointed that there's no news of a new game...what i want to see from a new one is more gound missions and more interior missions and good multiplayer with various mission types.

@mrsmiley:   I played it on a 1.6 gigahertz processor.  Man, that was good fun.  I'd love to see a cleaned up version, though.  What I remember about X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter back then was everyone said it wasn't as good as the original Tie-Fighter game.  I don't know, I never played that one, but I enjoyed X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter well enough.  Ha! I think I even tried playing it online over my crappy 56k modem.

Man you sum it up exactly how I feel about this game. Its the first game I remember having a decent amount of expansions to it also.

My first online multiplayer experience was X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, I was heavy into that stuff and not bad to boot...those were great days...the real reason I enjoyed it was the fact the a flight stick could be used which made it feel so realiztic when you had a throttle control, quick hit buttons, and force feedback, but playing that now would only seem old and bland, exspecially since I dont own a stick anymore, and an X-box live arcade realease seems impossible for a re-hash since there were so many key commands in the old games such as setting speed, shield, and weapon power schemes, changing flight speed, setting deflector area (Front, back, or a all), locking s-foils into attack position.....actually, you know what, if they made the next game where all it was, was an fully detailed X-Wing, and all you did was push the A-Button to toggle your s-foils....I Would So Buy That!

I would be totally psyched for a modernized update of the original game, but there's no way I could play the original again.
It's been long enough that I could play through the same story mode without much deja vouz and I don't know if a new, different x-wing or tie fighter would cut it.

A update like Monkey Island (like most people have said) with online co-op or deathmatch added would be absolutely awesome.

Needs to be a proper sequel to TIE Fighter, with the excellent story telling and mission structure that implies.  I'm with Brad on this one, I don't know that anyone EXCEPT Larry Holland and company could pull it off properly, atleast from a design standpoint.

A new game with the same basic game mechanics as the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter games might actually get me back into Star Wars. They were friggin' AWESOME.

I really hope mechwarrior will be good and not a dumbed down paltry tribute like every other time the games industry has tried to reanimate the corpse of a long dead franchise.

Those games are the best Star Wars games ever made. While those Jedi RPG games are all the rage now, that is not what Star Wars is about.

An XBLA version...that would not fit the controls of the game. You had to utilize a ton of keys to play very effectively. Sure you could just use the throttle and weapon switch buttons, but to play at full efficiency you had to put ships to memory, adjust shield, lasers, and engines, command wingmates, switch through different classes of ships, choose weapon linkages, and a myriad of other things you just cannot do on a 360 controller.

Until LucasArts can really prove to me that they've repented and taken a new positive course, I'm forced to assume they will do whatever route lets them gouge the most money from the most people with the least cost.  Steam release it is.   Then maybe an iPhone app.

I wish Acti-Vivindi would do the Sierra adventures some justice instead of the half-assed digital version of the disc "collection" series that was already poorly slapped together a few years ago.

I wore out two joysticks on X-Wing back in the day. The joy of X-Wing was that it was usually just you and a few other X/Y/B/A-Wings against a whole slew of Tie Fighters. I always avoided Tie Fighter because (from my X-Wing experience) it seemed like it would be you and a bunch of Tie Fighters against just a few Rebel fighters. I seriously doubt that was the case, but my young mind always had that idea so I missed out it seems. They should TOTALLY remake Tie Fighter so I'll finally have a chance to play it.

I think that TIE Fighter was the first game I ever finished, and it caught me completely by surprise.  I was just expecting the game to go on forever, so when the credits started rolling I was crestfallen.  It never occurred to me that there would be an end to the missions, which kept getting crazier and crazier.  The TIE Defender? Absolutely nuts.

Also, way better than the Rouge Squadron games.

X Wing was my obsession back in 1993.  I used to watch just the beginning of these games just for the awesome cutscenes. Especially when I got a SoundBlaster card and could actually hear everything going on in the opening cinemas. Tie Fighter was even better what with being able to play as the empire which was such a perverse and awesome idea when I was 8 years old. I even did a book report on The Stele Chronicles which was a short story packed with Tie Fighter that also acted as a manual for the game itself.

So I think it should go without saying that a new game in the series would be more than a little welcome.

Proud to say that I still have right here on my wall the Tie Fighter poster that I ordered with my original copy of the game,
from the LucasArts store.

Wishlist for X-wing: better balancing, of course.  Fewer escort missions.  And a bevy of cheats/trainers.  God, some of those were hilarious.  Oh, and animated sprite cutscenes please.  Don't go all "re-imagined" just to keep your artists busy.
Or legos. But only animated sprite legos.

Fact: Best thing about X-wing was the fact it SPED YOU UP in the trench run.  So few games bother to do that.
Man, now I gotta look at new flight sticks.  Been ages.  I've never owned a flight stick that wasn't a DA-15.  Oh Thrustmaster, whither the glory days?

X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter was the shit.  I would definitely jump at the chance to play that again, as the originals just don't run well on newer PC's.  And an XBLA remake?  Or, dare to hope, a full blown new XVT game?  Hot damn that would be fantastic.

I'd hope this stonker arrives on ALL platforms, but as a person with all platforms available and a long time XvT mad fan I really want it to arrive on PSN because this is a game that could actually benefit from the Sixaxis motion control.  There were a whole lot of keys in the game, and having freeform flight would be quite a slick option.
