When Passions Flare, Lines Are Crossed [UPDATED]

One player's heated rhetoric about sexual harassment in the fighting community causes a furious debate, one that has Capcom apologizing.

No Caption Provided

UPDATE: Bakhtanians has issued a statement in the wake of today's coverage. Read it here.

--

“This is a community that’s, you know, 15 or 20-years-old and the sexual harassment is part of a culture,” said competitive fighting game player Aris "Aris" Bakhtanians on a recent live stream for Capcom's Cross Assault show, “and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community.”

Capcom has since apologized for comments made during a conversation on sexual harassment in the fighting game community, which that quote was pulled from. It was a discussion focused on Bakhtanians, and took place during a recent episode of the company’s Cross Assault reality show. It’s part of a promotion for Street Fighter X Tekken.

Cross Assault started with 10 contestants divided into two teams, Team Tekken and Team Street Fighter. The final four contestants will be determined today, and the last matches begin March 3.

A reader initially pointed out the inflammatory commentary, which took place during day five.

Bakhtanians is the head of Team Tekken, and was engaged in a conversation that chiefly involved Twitch.tv community manager Jared Rea. Twitch.tv is hosting the daily streaming of the day-long Cross Assault episodes.

“The views and opinions expressed by cast members in the live internet program 'Cross Assault' do not reflect those of Capcom,” said a Capcom spokesperson in a statement issued to me last night. “As a company, Capcom believes that everyone should be treated with respect. This particular issue was brought to our attention and has been addressed. We sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by any comments expressed during the show.”

You can listen to the conversation by fast forwarding to one hour and 45 minutes into the following video. A user on YouTube also collected a series of comments made by Bakhtanians on day one.

For example: "Miranda, I wanna know your bra size."

Tensions were immediately raised over Rea's suggestion the fighting game community, once insular and limited but now steadily growing year-over-year, was potentially alienating outsiders from becoming fans of fighting games or the competitive scene because of inappropriate sexual language. Bakhtanians took issue with Rea's criticism.

Here’s a lengthy transcript of their exchange:

Rea: You know what it is, to be honest with you? We’re getting older. Do you really want to keep hanging around with a bunch of [guys in their] early 20s who don’t know how to treat one another with respect? That’s what it is.

Bakhtanians: Alright, man. The thing is...if you don’t like the scene, how it is right now, it just seems like you’re trying to create...turn it into something that it’s not, and it’s never going to be. You know what I mean?

Rea: That’s really unfortunate [inaudible]...the way it is right now, they want to enjoy fighting games, but they’re so incredibly turned off by [the language].

Bakhtanians: This doesn’t involve me, Jared, I don’t know if you can hear me--this is Aris. This doesn’t really involve me, but if you don’t like onions, you get your sandwich without onions, man. I mean, this is the fighting game community.

Rea: Can I get my Street Fighter without sexual harassment?

Bakhtanians: You can’t. You can’t because they’re one and the same thing. This is a community that’s, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community--it’s StarCraft. There’s nothing wrong with StarCraft if you enjoy it, and there’s nothing wrong with anything about eSports, but why would you want just one flavor of ice cream, you know? There’s eSports for people who like eSports, and there’s fighting games for people who like spicy food and like to have fun. There’s no reason to turn them into the same thing, you know?

You can’t go to the NBA and say “hey, I like basketball, but I don’t want them to play with a basketball, I want them to play with a football.” It just doesn’t...it doesn’t make sense to have that attitude, you know? These things are established for years. That would be like someone from the fighting game community going over to StarCraft and trying to say “hey, StarCraft, you guys are too soft, let’s start making sexual harassment jokes to each other on StarCraft.” That’s not cool, people wouldn’t like that. StarCraft isn’t like that. People would get defensive, and that’s what you’re trying to do the fighting game community, and it’s not right. It’s ethically wrong.

I know that you’re thinking “what do you know about ethics? You say racial stuff and sexist stuff.” But those are jokes and if you were really a member of the fighting game community, you would know that. You would know that these are jokes.

Rea: So, ensuring that we alienate any and all female viewers...that’s the ethical thing to do?

Bakhtanians: Well, you know, there are layers here, if you think about this. There are layers of ethics. There are people who are racist and commit hate crimes, right? And then there are people who are racist but they have tons of friends of all colors and they have deep love for those friends. Do you think those people are one and the same? Absolutely not.

StarCraft was brought up several times during the discussion of fighting games role in the larger eSports movement, specifically in regards to what lessons the community should and should not learn from its popularity.

I reached out to Bakhtanians to discuss his comments on Cross Assault, but he didn't respond.

When I contacted Capcom, I included a transcript of the relevant conversation. The company told me the cast and crew had been informed that “any inappropriate or disrespectful comments will not be tolerated during filming.”

Upon receiving the statement from Capcom, I forwarded it in full to Bakhtanians. No response.

And there is one very important fact about this whole story: Cross Assault is not a male-only event. There are two females: Team Street Fighter’s Sherry “Sherryjenix” Nhan and Team Tekken’s Miranda “Super_Yan” Pakozdi.

During the exchange, as matches raged in the background, Pakozdi chimed in about Bakhtanians’ explanation for the pervasiveness of inappropriate sexual language within fighting game culture.

“It hurts the community,” she said.

Everyone in the stream made reference to Keystone events at the San Jose Bar & Grill in San Jose, California, a spot that’s reportedly known for its more crass comments about during play. Pakozdi acknowledged it was an issue during Keystone events, but that it never went, from her perspective, over the line.

“You don’t know where the line is,” she declared.

“My point is is where I’m from, in our arcade, our line may be different than yours,” responded Bakhtanians, “but the point is that fighting games are never gonna be the same as StarCraft, it’s never gonna be the same. You can’t turn basketball into baseball, no matter what you do.”

Rea said sexual harassment was less of an issue in the StarCraft community, a point that others, including Bakhtanians, pushed back on. He conceded. Regardless, he argued, private matches can’t be controlled, but the actions of the participants and audience members raised the real concern.

Again, here’s a snippet:

Rea: When I go to MSL or MLG and someone blows up a ghost [Starcraft], does someone go “Yeah, rape that bitch!”?

[group laughter]

Bakhtanians: But, you know, Jared, you’re right. But if there was that much money being spent on Street Fighter, it wouldn’t be happening here, either, you know. There would be more rules, there would be security here, it’s not the same thing. It’s not the same thing.

Rea: When I go to SoCal regionals and I see a Phoenix [from Marvel vs. Capcom 3] on main stage getting blown up and there’s some dude in the audience just yelling “Bitch! Bitch!” every time she gets hit and then she killed and goes “Yeah, rape that bitch!” Yeah, that’s totally acceptable! Really? Really? You’re going to tell me that’s acceptable?

Bakhtanians: Look, man. What is unacceptable about that? There’s nothing unacceptable about that. These are people, we’re in America, man, this isn’t North Korea. We can say what we want. People get emotional.

There was some light discussion after this, but it mostly trailed off.

Pakozdi, who was assigned to work with Bakhtanians as part of Team Tekken, did not simply blow things off. Like many people, she signed onto Twitter and expressed disappointment over the day’s events. She eventually deleted much of her commentary, but it was captured by the same reader who tipped me off to this in the first place.

“I hope my mom isn’t disappointed with all of this shit,” reads one tweet.

“Capcom and the stream teams know and they don’t care. I just gotta wait 2 more days,” reads another.

“I’m not leaving because by contract I have to stay here 2 more days. If it were up to me I would have left long ago," she said.

Bakhtanians is a well known in the community, explaining his Cross Assault involvement.
Bakhtanians is a well known in the community, explaining his Cross Assault involvement.

I reached out to Pakozdi, but she did not respond.

Day six of Cross Assault took place yesterday. Pakozdi played, but if you start watching around eight hours and 32 minutes into the stream, where she's playing as Balrog, she doesn't even attack. She just pushes forward on the stick. This continues in the next matches, where she plays as Ken using the same "strategy."

Essentially, she's given up.

Per the rules of the show, she would then have to face off against John "Dr. Sub-Zero" Rockafeller, who was already eliminated. If he beat her in three out of five matches, he would be "revived."

Instead, she forfeited. Moments after she bowed out, Rockafeller looked over and handed his prizes over to her.

“I would like to donate everything to Super_Yan for being an angel,” he said.

Bakhtanians also contributes the website Avoiding the Puddle and the site’s associated Twitter account.

“esports,” he wrote last night.

Previously, however, he did have his own personal Twitter account. What’s listed in his bio?

“Fuck you.”

This is new and exciting.

No really, Aris is actually right to a certain extent, not only has he been doing exactly the same thing for years now (just take a look at his recent SC5 streams for reference) but so have a large portion of the SF/SC/Tekken/whatever else commentators. I find it odd that people are only starting to complain now.

It's way too late for me to bother throwing in my two cents, but I'm glad that this story's blown up over the past couple of days. People shouldn't be dicks. Quit being dicks, people!

@benson: Right. Because he didn't write a whole book about how he was born a man and chose to be a woman. Seriously, fuck off.

So you finally admit that she IS a woman! You're making progress!

edit to respond to your edit: I did read it, it shows clearly that gender isn't a binary thing and is determined by a multiplicity of factors wich can be affected by a number of pathologies.

This is what the FGC is about. Fuck the fringe players. They can have their awful sexist rape jokes and awkward advances. Nobody gives a shit about them anymore.

@mrfluke: Like I said to the other guy, despite the Ryu a/v, I'm not a part of the fighting game community. My stance on that issue is that if their community wants to change, it should be their culture changing from within, not having to bow under populist pressure from all these people dying to protect an innocent little girl from the mean misogynists. I'll always give props to the elitists who kept the culture alive when no one cared about them. They were fine before the casual revival, if it fades out as a fad, they'll be fine after.

@GreggD: There is a reason I didn't list SRK. They have some good people and do work with Level Up, but their forums are huge risk for beginners to wander into. They also have links to the old guard of SF players that spawned Aris.

Fans of MK should check out TestYourMight and follow 16bit on twitter. His podcast is okay.

There are a lot of great things coming out of the FGC. Cross Assault was a bad marketing experiment that was doomed from the start when they picked Aris. It also seemed poorly planned when it came to the events. Shouldn't have been live.

The worst part about it, I bet that Aris guy is enjoying all of the attention he is getting.  I try to watch some of the fighting game tournaments on twitch, but just about every announcer is racist and/or sexist.  It's like, they took the anonymity that people hide behind on the internet and removed it and that's how they act in real life now.

What is funny...is the MOBA community is even worse than the fighting game community if you can believe that.

@RagingDaemon: The people that matter support Super__Yan's actions. Continue on thinking everybody wants this, because they don't. A couple want to hold it back and to themselves like they are still in high school. Nope! Don't think so. Either you guys mature with the rest of them kicking and screaming, or be left behind.

It's as simple as that. It's not 1997 anymore.

@Zokari: One dude engaged anything I had to say with any substance. The rest of you that responded were clearly gotten to and went right to some version of insults that didn't even contain a cursory element of calling someone out. Point out things I said that were untrue, provide counter examples. Like a woman that won an EVO, or say the WNBA gets awesome ratings for their terrific slam dunks. If you want to pepper ad homs in between that, go nuts. Otherwise I write you off as both indoctrinated and too stupid to even explain yourself.

I agree that his comments were sexist! Very sexist! But, I disagree with people saying that the clothing in fighting games is sexist... Both men and women alike wear little to nothing in fighting games! I think that female fighters in a bikini and dude fighters going shirtless is not really that bad!

If this is the kind of crying and hand-wringing that ensues, "Esports" just needs its own version of a WNBA that no one gives a shit about and no one watches because comparatively speaking it's unskilled garbage. I can remember an 8 year old boy getting close to the finals at the last EVO. Can't remember a single woman getting that far.

"Correlation does not imply causation" - Perhaps the reason a single woman didn't get that far is a symptom of the inherent misogynist tendencies of the community.

Real talk: name a single thing women have ever invented that men clamored to be a part of? Vagina doesn't count. Everything from dungeons and dragons to combat sports started as a by dudes, for dudes cool thing.

Really? Let's see... How about Dr. Grace Murray Hopper? She lead the team that created the first proper computer language, COBOL. This site and probably half the stuff you use a day is influenced by her actions.

Or maybe how about Stephanie Kwolek? Her chemical research created Kevlar. Or Patsy Sherman, another chemist who created Scotchguard? I could go on all night but what a ridiculous statement for you to have made...

If the community doesn't want to change and is willing to give up some or all of the corporate money to be free, it's their choice. The choice of the guys who were there from day 1 and paid their dues. They don't need your idealistic bullshit moral highground finger wagging.

Just because a "good ol' boy" club exists doesn't mean they should get a free pass. Times change and people are expected to grow up and change with them or they will be left behind. Of course that is there choice they are free to choose whatever they want.

Or it's entirely possible mainstream culture accepts the behavior. Look to rap lyrics and torture porn style horror movies for one. Competitive outlets must exist. You cannot shut away the primal and negative sides of human emotion because in your rainbow sunshine worldview that would be real nice.

Don't confuse free speech with acceptance of an idea, people can say whatever they want. Doesn't mean you have to listen or accept them.

Those of you going nuclear at this smack of hyper liberal idealists who are either ignorant or willfully naive about how the real world with real people works. It's ugly. We're tribal.

So it's fine to just give in to your baser side and be a horrible human being? I thought the idea was to be a better person and rise above that.

Look at your righteous indignation and understand there are people who legitimately wish one or all of their hobbies never went mainstream. Back when it was just the truly passionate working in the trenches without leeches and Johnny come latelys trying to change the shit the pioneers built. And people who wanted to be a part of it had to be able to handle it.

I was a huge time anime fan back in the day, back when we were still bootlegging VHS tapes and subtitling things with Amiga with genlocks.. I saw the same thing as anime became more mainstream. Plenty of anger from people, screaming how anime isn't pure and the new fans are posers. Isn't the point of prompting a hobby to expose to to more people? To get people to share your passion for it? You are winning, people are taking notice. I don't understand why you would push away those you were trying to attract in the first place?

This situation reminds me of the vast majority of women who tried to hang in one of my former kickboxing gyms. They would talk a good game, but the first real, full force punch to the face, and they were gone. The ones who stayed and flourished weren't the cry babies, mentally weak, victim mentality types.

I'm not even sure what to say to this? Equating sexual harassment to sparring? No one wants to be broken down, male or female.

@RagingDaemon: enjoy  fighting games while they last you asshole,

look at you, your part of the fighting game community and this is what you saying are you that dense?

youve got a boatload of new players breaking into fighting games due to SF4 and Mk9 and thats your fucking attitude  towards new players? to fucking be an elitist towards new players, and scare them off.

i hope your a minority , otherwise this genre's growth is going to get stagnant real fast as fighting games dont have the luxury of a call of duty mainstream appeal to keep it alive, and sooner or later this genre is gonna depend on a community to keep it alive ,

which if it has pricks like you that love to be "passionate" about a fucking video game enough to scare off the newcomers, then enjoy wacking off with your other elitists about fighting game theory and see u in another 10 years

I wonder what the reaction would be if instead of shouting about rape, it was, "That nigger is getting hung!" I'm guessing people would be generally less cool with it.

People need to look at more of the FGC than just those clips and Cross Assault.

1. Maximilian the Online Warrior: Great and informative videos for fighting games and Call of Duty. Check out his work and see the new face of the FGC.

2. Level Up Series: They were the first to ban racism and most profanity on their stream. They stream a weekly event "Wednesday Night Fights" that is a lot of fun to watch and other than the weak pre-game show it is very professional. Find clips on their youtube page to start and maybe catch a stream.

3. Cross Counter - Gootecks and Mike Ross: Pro players that reached out to the online community and now have a pretty decent weekly live show. They are a safe start for most people and Mike Ross did have a documentary done about him. They make good Youtube videos and have called out offensive people on xbox live.

4. Ultra David and James Chen. They are the professional voices of the FGC. They are always good to listen to.

5. Iplaywinner: 50/50. They have great streams, but they pride themselves in keeping aggressive arcade culture alive. They have tried to make things better in the past and one of their writers even wrote a post about sexism - http://iplaywinner.com/news/2011/11/2/the-salty-runback-oktoberfest.html They aren't perfect, but they have been working on it.

DON'T LOOK AT THE CHAT. THAT IS ALWAYS GOOD ADVICE.

I also want to mention that Jared isn't perfect. I watched the TNT when he pitched Frame Trap and I watched every episode of that show. Jared was a perfect example of the childish cynicism that he harped on while talking to Jeff and the gang. He picked on fans of non street fighter games and passed judgement on games he never played.

@Napalm: My bad chief. I first sent this reply as a PM. Here it is in comment form for more people to reactionarily get angry at.

I'm not even part of the fighting game community, despite my Ryu a/v. Don't bring up hyperbole like slavery or the holocaust and compare it to offensive language. That's intellectually dishonest and disingenuous. The point is, the dabblers and outsiders want to exert control on this group because it offends them. It crosses your particular line. If the fighting game community chooses to be insular and abandon the money, they're the ones who were playing obscure shit while no one cared about them for years, they'll be fine.

In this particular case this chick jumped in with both feet. She knew what she was getting into, supposedly. When she couldn't handle it that's when everyone had to come to the rescue. If you get in to spar you suffer the risk of a broken nose. No one lures you in with candy saying you are going to get hugged for 3 minute rounds. It's a caustic and tough community with jokes and language that are offensive to some. No one was deceived.

There's huggy bear shit out there for people who are into it. You're all up in arms trying to homogenize and dilute everything under your banner of the greater good of gaming or somesuch nonsense.

Also Capcom is probably thanking Aris for his antics due to bringing publicity to that unheard of (and boring by all accounts) show.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU GIANTBOMB?

Don't blame Giantbomb for this bag of dicks.

@Zokari: You are born one sex (usually...and he was).

If you're a male you're more than free to "be" female if you want, but you can not change that you were born with a penis, testicles, and a Y chromosome.

Saying someone can't factually refer to you as "he" anymore is fucking absurd. And frankly if genders are so unimportant anyway, why get so up in arms over calling someone by their genetic sex?

Man, as stupid as Aris' comments are, I still think some people try WAY too hard to get offended, women more often than men, it seems.

Dumb shit like "Rape that bitch!" is said by plenty an idiotic gamer, to men quite often as well . Then they say the same shit to a woman, and now you're not only an idiot, but you're a sexist too!

I don't support any stupid dialogue as such, but "closing off a community to people" and "people trying way too hard to get offended by dumb shit and thus avoiding your community" are two different things.

It's like calling a man a sexist because he's openly berating a woman. Her gender has nothing to do with it, the man just happens to be a fucking asshole.

Imagine you're a woman who WAS raped. Would you feel comfortable hearing people yell that shit all around you as a fucking cheer? Probably not.

I think most people don't have to "try' to get offended at comments that treat rape as a joke.

@RagingDaemon: You are a real piece of shit who is clearly lacking the emotional maturity to grasp the point of this article.

And real talk: it sounds like you're a fairly massive misogynistic prick.

@Zokari: Truth hurts?

No, your complete lack of awareness when it comes to societal norms despite underlying cultural biases does make for comedy though.

Add "transphobic nonsense" to the list of entitled bullshit comments in this thread left by sexist men who enjoy their sexism.

People like this exist unfortunately but I don't know what bothers me more, that dumbass or that he was able to go on and on harassing her without someone telling him to shut the fuck up. I'm surprised she didn't walk out sooner than day 6. If you watch the end of the Day 6 footage, she was clearly scared and apprehensive when she decided to. That's messed up.

She was, unfortunately, contractually obligated, as she said on her Twitter, to stay two more days. It'd be sad if she decided to leave the scene. We need people like her to counterbalance the asshole population that currently overwhelms the FGC.

It's mind boggling that you have people so profoundly bigoted and stupid that they are, like aris, actually proud of the way the fighting game community treats women. "Hey, if you don't want bigotry you should go play starcraft instead".

Indeed. I'm sure MLG and Activision will GLADLY take the players that these morons turn away.

@Robo: Oh, okay. Good thing Giant Bomb user Robo is here to make these grand pronouncements about the nature of sex and gender for the rest of us peons.

You don't get to decide these things, asshole.

Gender, even on a purely genetic standpoint, isn't a binary thing.

@RagingDaemon: Okay then. Have fun keeping the community down by accepting genuinely offensive comments as the norm. Nobody's asking the community to become a bunch of politically correct angels. People are just saying, "hey, maybe this racist/sexist language is a bit over the line." It's not our fault you can't see where the line is. Saying the community is "just that way" doesn't make it any better. Slavery used to a be a "thing" that was acceptable until people said, "hey, guys? Maybe we should stop disparaging an entire race of people."

There is also a very clear difference between normal trash talking banter, and offensive commentary that crosses the line. Like I said, there is a line. Maybe you should use it and stop acting like a bunch of barbarians because, "that's just how we roll, dawg!"
