When The Gunstringer Comes Out, You'll Only Pay $39.99

Fruit Ninja Kinect and free access to downloadable content also inside the box.

Pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew.

The first retail release from Twisted Pixel Games wasn't always meant to be. The Gunstringer was intended to continue down the downloadable path, but during development, things changed, and Microsoft worked with Twisted Pixel to transform The Gunstringer into a game inside of a box.

That box will arrive on store shelves on September 13 for $39.99, which is $10 less than the average price for a Kinect game, and bundled with a copy of Halfbrick Studios' Fruit Ninja Kinect.

The bundling of Fruit Ninja Kinect might not mean that much to you, though, since the game arrives on Xbox Live Arcade on August 10.

The Gunstringer will also come packed with the ability to download a free add-on pack entitled The Wavy Tube Man Chronicles, wherein you'll fight off cowboys and future dudes.

Man, I hate future dudes.

Still don't know what to think of this game. Looks very odd...

Posted by newsocks

I glad they're selling it at reasonable price

Posted by jozzy

Wow, the fruit ninja guys must be thrilled that this news comes out right now, mere weeks before the release of their standalone game. Could impact it significantly.

Posted by Krakn3Dfx

$40 for a game that was originally a$10-$15 XBL title, plus it comes with another $10-$15 XBL title.

Yeah, uh...no.

Posted by TheMartino

I came here to say "man, $15 sounded better" but bundling it with Fruit Ninja Kinect totally defused me.

Look forward to purchasing it!

Posted by RE_Player1

While I think Fruit Ninja will be bad on 360 I'm glad they are bundling it in with this at $39.99. Softens the blow for what appears to be a short game.

Posted by DrRandle

Hmm, the Fruit Ninja thing is weird, only because of it's existence Arcade. This now makes me think that I should wait to get it, since I'm getting Gunstringer.

Posted by Cameron

While it might be $10 less than the average Kinect game, it's $25 more than the average XBLA game. Unless they have added roughly three times the content they originally had, I still think this is a bad deal.

Edited by Deathpooky

The Fruit Ninja thing is kind of ridiculous. Summer of Arcade was already a non-deal because you had to buy Fruit Ninja to get the deal, and now even those with Kinects have no incentive to get it since you'll get it for free with the only other good Kinect game to be released this year.

Edited by sixpin

Giving away a Summer of Arcade game with this seems odd. That potentially wrecks sales of Fruit Nina and/or people wanting to take advantage of the Summer of Arcade free game deal. And $40 seems high since this was originally going to be a downloadable game... Maybe there's more to it than the usual XBLA title?

Posted by Cybexx

Man XBLA prices just keep creeping up...I kid of course. Its interesting they figured out a way to release a retail version of Fruit Ninja, there really should be more XBLA Kinect games though, I think most Kinect ideas don't justify a retail release.

Posted by AndyPhifer

Buying that!

Posted by bhhawks78

Would consider a purchase at 8-10$. 40$ with a bad iphone game translated to kinect jammed in? No chance in hell.

Posted by B_Heart

Too expensive

Posted by Slaker117

Twisted Pixel seems like a cool developer and they have a fun flavor, but given their track record, I don't think I trust them to make gameplay worthy of a $40 release. Their games have worked because they were clever and cheap. If they can't step up their overall design, I don't see clever justifying the price tag.

No. I won't.

Well said. From the sound of it the point of bundling Fruit Ninja is for people who don't have an online console, so it won't be a code, it'll be on disc. If it WAS a code, people would still be confused about the Summer of Arcade promotion. If it isn't, there's no way it would apply.

Seeing how Arcade games are rarely discounted and how frequently retail titles are, I suspect most people considering buying Gunstringer will just wait until Best Buy or Amazon put it on sale for $20 or $25, completely gutting day 1 sales.

Posted by beefmotron

Oddly enough packing in fruit ninja turned this from a likely buy to a rental, since I'll probably get fruit ninja to get crimson alliance free and I don't want to "buy" it twice

Posted by m0rdr3d

No I won't.  Twisted Pixel has some funny folks there... But no.
Posted by MaFoLu

Well, atleast it's nice of them to tell people Fruit Ninja will be included with this before it's released on Arcade.

On the topic of Gunstringer, I don't really care about the price considering I don't have a Kinect...

Posted by Winsord

Sounds like a good deal to me, but I'd have to get a Kinect first, which doesn't sound like a very good deal at all.

Posted by Zabant

GRRRRRR BUT I WAS GOING TO PICK UP ALL THE SUMMER OF ARCADE GAMES TO GET THE FREE GAME DEAL. THIS MAKES THAT TOTALLY POINTLESS.

I think if you wait to get fruit ninja kinect from this, you won't be able to get the free game, as that deal expires August 23rd I think.

I have a feeling MS was sensing that there wasn't a lot of excitment over the second half of this years SoA releases, might explain why they're offering up this bundle.

I was thinking the same thing, especially since Fruit Ninja Kinect is part of the Summers of Arcade deal. It seems like they should have kept quiet on this one until after that game dropped and people picked it up for that reason (since I'm assuming it will impact sales somewhat for people planning on buying this in the future [myself possibly included]).

Now, I don't want to sound negative, or like I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth, but this seems like they're trying to compensate for the notion that this was supposed to be an XBLA game.  Knock it down $20 and throw in another game and some DLC, and it makes it look like a much more reasonable deal.

And hey, it probably is a pretty good deal.

Nice of Twisted Pixel to keep the bad Kinect game market alive.

Really? That much for a re-skinned Comic Jumper? Which was already waaaaaaaay too much at $15. Hipster con-artists at work.

Posted by iDarktread

This requires Kinect though, right?

$39.99 + Kinect.

Posted by Wandrecanada

For those complaining about it requiring Kinect.  If you don't already have a Kinect you probably won't want Gunslinger.  So no one really cares if you aren't getting the game.  Gunslinger is certainly not going to be the title that sells Kinect.

Wow. A lot of hate from people who haven't even played the game yet. Also, blinded by the Kinect, Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night.

considering the millions of people who own kinect and the fact that they would be potentially averse to buying a downloadable game, it makes sense, but it would have to be completely unlike any other twisted pixel game for me to drop that much money on it.

I'd like to see a Quick Look first...

Flawless logic right there.

Also, love how Twisted Pixel went from becoming a really fun and well-liked developer to receiving some serious backlash for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Oh, videogame community, this is why I hate you.

@Peanut: Ehehehe.

I'm just saying that's it's unfortunate I'd have to shell out the money for Kinect in order to play Twisted Pixel's new game at all.

That sounds like pretty flawless logic to me (I'm assuming you're being sarcastic). Nothing else on Kinect is looking like a killer app from where I'm sitting. I'd probably play this if it wasn't tied to Kinect. This is going to sound like another old hardcore gamer hating on Kinect, but the lowered price (and especially the mass market pack-in) sorta stinks of desperation to me.
Posted by SamFo

I actually think this has 'bad move' written all over it. I can't see this game not being a total flop at retail.

I don't think anyone has said one negative word about Twisted Pixel as a company. They just don't want this game and they're annoyed by the BS with free games and Summer of Arcade.

Sweet, now I don't have to buy Fruit Ninja, I'll just wait for this to come out.

Posted by IshimuraD

I was interested in both games, but not to the point of even thinking of purchasing either. This definitely has piqued my interest though, so I might be picking up Gunslinger if it turns out OK.

The title of this article does not sit well with me, so I'll rename it "If The Gunstringer is sold, its buyer will pay close to $50 with tax."

Surely the Fruit Ninja devs will get the same royalties from a sale of this bundle as they would someone buying it on Live Arcade. I I don't see why they'd be pissed as their game should benefit from two marketing pushes.
Is it wrong I'm interested in Gunstringer getting a retail release solely based on the assumption Twisted Pixel will use all that disc space to include a ton of video?

The subtitle would be "Damian concludes glass to be half empty".

Shame, I have no plans on getting a Kinect anytime soon.

Posted by buft

Wait so they bundled fruit ninja in with the summer of arcade games so that people without kinect will have to buy it to get the free 1200 point game and are giving it away with the gunstringer too.

Posted by Asurastrike

They need to prove that they took this game far beyond the original scope of when it was a downloadable game, before anyone should even consider purchasing this at $40.

I think you're pretty much spot on. Who knows what Gunstringer would have been priced at on XBLA.. $20? $15? If the value of the current standalone game doesn't add up to $40 retail, it's good of Microsoft to throw in some extras. But everything about the way Gunstringer has been handled feels overthought by marketing people.

Should have just stuck with the original plan, and added in controller support. Now it all just seems like some crazy experiment, which isn't fair to Twisted Pixel.

Still no.

@CH3BURASHKA: lol. Not bad.

For the record, I was just trying to even out the glowiness. I got nothing against this game. Well, I would like it if he moved more like a marionette, but that's pretty minor.
