When The Gunstringer Comes Out, You'll Only Pay $39.99

Fruit Ninja Kinect and free access to downloadable content also inside the box.

Pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew.
Pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew pew.

The first retail release from Twisted Pixel Games wasn't always meant to be. The Gunstringer was intended to continue down the downloadable path, but during development, things changed, and Microsoft worked with Twisted Pixel to transform The Gunstringer into a game inside of a box.

That box will arrive on store shelves on September 13 for $39.99, which is $10 less than the average price for a Kinect game, and bundled with a copy of Halfbrick Studios' Fruit Ninja Kinect.

The bundling of Fruit Ninja Kinect might not mean that much to you, though, since the game arrives on Xbox Live Arcade on August 10.

The Gunstringer will also come packed with the ability to download a free add-on pack entitled The Wavy Tube Man Chronicles, wherein you'll fight off cowboys and future dudes.

Man, I hate future dudes.

I have a Kinect. If there is a Quick Look of this and think "cool," and if there is a demo for it I can try, then I'll think of thinking of getting it. I paid $30 for Dance Central and thought that was the perfect price point. Also, I despise westerns, so this is going well for me.

Wow. So not only did they lose my sale for Gunstringer by making it retail, they also lost my previously guaranteed Fruit Ninja sale during Summer of Arcade (because I'll feel like a sucker if I impulse bought Gunstringer down the line and had already purchased Fruit Ninja).

I don't have a kinect but I am looking forward to hearing what the bomb guys have to say about this when they review it (assuming they will).

It seemed like they made the jump from arcade game to retail game a little too late in development for them to have enough content to fill what a $40 game should have.

In my opinion as someone who is not an employee of theirs (and thus am not privy to all the little important details) I feel like they should have just buckled down and got their game to 2gigs.

I don't know where all the hate is coming from, but the game looks fun. Plus there are numerous full priced games that are definitely shorter than whatever this one has to offer.  This price for a charming game from a fun developer plus an extra Fruit Ninja for me to give away is worth my money.
Of course in the end it will all come down to if the game in the end is fun or not, which I'm sure we will all find out when it's released.

I love the Twisted Pixel guys, and will totally support their jump to retail.

Once I get kinect I'll buy this. By then I'm guessing it probably won't even be $40 anymore.

For the record, I was just trying to even out the glowiness. I got nothing against this game. Well, I would like it if he moved more like a marionette, but that's pretty minor.

Now, I don't want to sound negative, or like I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth, but this seems like they're trying to compensate for the notion that this was supposed to be an XBLA game. Knock it down $20 and throw in another game and some DLC, and it makes it look like a much more reasonable deal. And hey, it probably is a pretty good deal.

I think you're pretty much spot on. Who knows what Gunstringer would have been priced at on XBLA.. $20? $15? If the value of the current standalone game doesn't add up to $40 retail, it's good of Microsoft to throw in some extras. But everything about the way Gunstringer has been handled feels overthought by marketing people.

Should have just stuck with the original plan, and added in controller support. Now it all just seems like some crazy experiment, which isn't fair to Twisted Pixel.

They need to prove that they took this game far beyond the original scope of when it was a downloadable game, before anyone should even consider purchasing this at $40.

Wait so they bundled fruit ninja in with the summer of arcade games so that people without kinect will have to buy it to get the free 1200 point game and are giving it away with the gunstringer too.

Wow, the fruit ninja guys must be thrilled that this news comes out right now, mere weeks before the release of their standalone game. Could impact it significantly.

Surely the Fruit Ninja devs will get the same royalties from a sale of this bundle as they would someone buying it on Live Arcade. I I don't see why they'd be pissed as their game should benefit from two marketing pushes.
Is it wrong I'm interested in Gunstringer getting a retail release solely based on the assumption Twisted Pixel will use all that disc space to include a ton of video?

I was interested in both games, but not to the point of even thinking of purchasing either. This definitely has piqued my interest though, so I might be picking up Gunslinger if it turns out OK.

Flawless logic right there. Also, love how Twisted Pixel went from becoming a really fun and well-liked developer to receiving some serious backlash for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Oh, videogame community, this is why I hate you.

I don't think anyone has said one negative word about Twisted Pixel as a company. They just don't want this game and they're annoyed by the BS with free games and Summer of Arcade.

That sounds like pretty flawless logic to me (I'm assuming you're being sarcastic). Nothing else on Kinect is looking like a killer app from where I'm sitting. I'd probably play this if it wasn't tied to Kinect. This is going to sound like another old hardcore gamer hating on Kinect, but the lowered price (and especially the mass market pack-in) sorta stinks of desperation to me.

considering the millions of people who own kinect and the fact that they would be potentially averse to buying a downloadable game, it makes sense, but it would have to be completely unlike any other twisted pixel game for me to drop that much money on it.

I was thinking the same thing, especially since Fruit Ninja Kinect is part of the Summers of Arcade deal. It seems like they should have kept quiet on this one until after that game dropped and people picked it up for that reason (since I'm assuming it will impact sales somewhat for people planning on buying this in the future [myself possibly included]).

Giving away a Summer of Arcade game with this seems odd. That potentially wrecks sales of Fruit Nina and/or people wanting to take advantage of the Summer of Arcade free game deal. And $40 seems high since this was originally going to be a downloadable game... Maybe there's more to it than the usual XBLA title?

Well said. From the sound of it the point of bundling Fruit Ninja is for people who don't have an online console, so it won't be a code, it'll be on disc. If it WAS a code, people would still be confused about the Summer of Arcade promotion. If it isn't, there's no way it would apply.

Seeing how Arcade games are rarely discounted and how frequently retail titles are, I suspect most people considering buying Gunstringer will just wait until Best Buy or Amazon put it on sale for $20 or $25, completely gutting day 1 sales.

Twisted Pixel seems like a cool developer and they have a fun flavor, but given their track record, I don't think I trust them to make gameplay worthy of a $40 release. Their games have worked because they were clever and cheap. If they can't step up their overall design, I don't see clever justifying the price tag.
