Wii U Arrives in United States on November 18

The date is set, prices are in ($299, $349), new games have been announced (Bayonetta 2, Black Ops 2), and the road to Wii U's launch has begun.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo of America has announced a release date for Wii U in the United States, and it's November 18. It doesn't launch in Japan until December 8, but Nintendo launched the original Wii first outside of Japan, too.

There are two sets. The basic set includes a Wii U, Game Pad, Game Pad charging cable, AC adaptor, HDMI cable, sensor bar and 8GB of memory. The "deluxe" set also includes 32GB of memory, a Game Pad charging cable, Game Pad cradle, a copy of NintendoLand, and enrollment in a premium service on Nintendo Direct, where you earn points for each purchase and can redeem them later for other purchases.

The big question? Price. It's $299 for the basic set, and $349 for the deluxe set.

As for big game announcements, Nintendo is publishing (funding?) Bayonetta 2 with Platinum Games, Monolith Soft is making a new game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is coming to the platform, and there's a new Monster Hunter. Well, "new." Monster Hunter Ultimate (Monster Hunter Tri G U in Japan) is based on the 3DS game, and the save data will be interchangeable between the two platforms. It's available at launch in Japan, and March everywhere else.

Project P-100, also from Platinum Games, was easily one of the most exciting Wii U games at E3, and that's been renamed The Wonderful 101. Spoiler: still looks awesome. Epic Mickey 2 will also be receiving a Wii U upgrade, and Activision made the clutch announcement of Skylanders Giants. Nintendo didn't discuss the NFC features baked into the Game Pad, though, so one might expect that will still have a separate device to scan the characters in.

Nintendo broke down the hilariously large "launch window" for Wii U, as well: November 18 until the end of March. Besides New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand, the company wasn't confirming release dates, but since Pikmin 3 isn't coming out until next spring in Japan, I wouldn't expect it over here this year, either.

No Caption Provided

In America, Nintendo spent the most time going over its big media initiative, Nintendo TVii. It aggregates content services--Amazon, Hulu Plus, etc.--and allows users to search, track, purchase, and play content from them on the Game Pad and the TV. There's a neat dynamic between the Game Pad and TV, too. The Game Pad takes screen captures of what's happening on TV, and allows users to comment and share on Facebook and Twitter. You also have access to your DVR through the Game Pad, though right now, that seems to mean TiVO-only devices.

Nintendo TVii launches alongside the device this year, but only in the United States and Canada.

The company also unveiled a strange interface for Nintendo TVii. Maybe it'll make more sense in our hands?

No Caption Provided

Over in Japan, there were some big announcements that should guarantee some folks on day one (like, say, 8-4). In addition to an even more deluxe package that comes with a Pro controller and a copy of Monster Hunter Ultimate, anyone who buys the premium version of the console also gains an invite to the upcoming beta for Dragon Quest X.

Nintendo won't be getting a dime of my money this time. And a base price of $250 for this under powered piece of junk? Too funny.

So in other words without the premium package your Wii U gamepad will either eat all your batteries or die without charge. I'm pretty sure which version to get.

@Lucidlife: HA! Not really. It's just really tiring how much negative bullshit the games community at large spits, especially in the last year or two where every game, every piece of hardware, every piece of new DLC and every initiative any developer or publisher tries is pushed into the mud. So now, how about go fuck yourself? Low enough for you?

Does NIntendo honestly think they will be able to recapture the same market as the Wii did? Watching the TVii "experience" made me wonder who is actually going to use that. I know I won't because I want to play games on my TV and my parents get frustrated with a DirecTV remote having too many buttons. Nintendo really has left us gamers at the bus-stop with nothing to hold on to but a great back catalog from 10+ years ago. $350 black matte my butt!

The only reason I'm really put off by the WiiU is its graphical capability. It's not going to advance consoles to the next generation whatsoever because of it; it'll just get ports of games that came out on PS3/360 as well as some new stuff that'll probably launch alongside PS3/360 as well. Once Sony/Microsoft put out a new console, the WiiU might struggle.

Well, you did it Nintendo. You got a 3rd party exclusive that is a must-buy for me. Guess I'll be scouring the internet for Wii U deals come Black Friday.

That is, if Bayonetta 2 is coming out in the nearby future.

Let's see how long that lasts when the next systems come out.

If it IS a true exclusive, than I'm surprised. You'd think Platinum would have learned their lesson after MadWorld tanked.

From other sites and reading comments, it sounds as if Nintendo paid Platinum 100% for exclusivity.

The hard drive limitations are astounding. It's almost like Nintendo doesn't want consumers to buy games/movies from their online store. Hard Drive's are cheap - Nintendo should be packing in as much as they can to get people to buy more.

Bayonetta 2 exclusive? Yup, I'm getting a Wii U. I think this gen I'm just going with the U and PC.

Pretty great launch window lineup, too. Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (with 3DS cross-play!), and that premium bundle's eshop discount is a really good idea. Please, Nimtendo, don't botch this like you did the Wii. Not that it'll matter, as it seems most people still have no idea what the Wii U is or that it even exists.

If the US prices is $350 I'm scared to think what the European price would be and specifically the Norwegian one.

The PS3 launched in the US for $600 but we had to pay like $1000 for it.

It's an interesting pricing. Try to make some money back from the early adopters that were going to buy it at damn near any price then cut it before the real next consoles get announced. I never though about that. Not bad, Nintendo.

I wish them well, but at 300$ or 350$ for a Nintendo, it’s too much for me and by the time its 200$ the ps4/Xbox 720 will be out and have games.

The comparisons some of you are making with the PS3/360 are hopelessly dumb. Of course it's more expensive than a 6-year-old console from a concluding generation that's had over half a decade to cultivate a library of games. Remember the PS3's growing pains?

All things considered, this is a fairly reasonable starting price for the system, as slow as its software launch might seem at first (also not surprising because, hey, it's new system). But most of what will be there plus its new media interfaces and features show a lot of promise. Right now, the system, in all its capabilities, looks like a good start.

This shit isn't new, folks. I know it's been a while since a console launch, but I'm sure at least some of you have lived through enough of them to know that this is a relatively sane deal being made on Nintendo's end.

Not Nintendo's fault, I mean they can't be giving these things away but the price takes it well out of my "buy it for my son on a whim" price range.

Especially when Pikmin is the only exclusive that interests me personally.

Because Bayonetta 2 is worth $360, am I right guys? What else are you going to play on this thing? Mii mini-games and yet another rehashed Mario? Whee? This console doesn't appeal to the mainstream nor the core gamer. I don't see grandma waving around a huge pad on morning talk shows.

So their "premium" model has less storage space than the launch PS3? Sounds like some really forward thinking! So advanced I can't even see the benefits, but certainly Nintendo knows what's best.

Also both SKUs are about 50$ too expensive for a Nintendo, I'd say.

Bayonetta 2 as a WiiU exclusive is diabolical. Probaby won't get a WiiU, but this is the first thing to make me even consider it. I had been worried that a sequel to Bayonetta might never happen.

As someone who really isn't a fan of traditional nintendo franchises, i really don't see the point investing 300-350 dollars in the WiiU. I can get just as good of an experience with AC3/BLOPS 2 on my Ps3 or 360 and with the Ps4 and Xbox 3 coming around the corner buying the WiiU will just be circling $400-500(WiiU + a couple of games or more) down the drain.

Games, yes, they want you to buy those directly from them. Movies, it sounds like those are all streaming through separate services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.). Amazon lets you download movies, but it also allows you to stream them, so why bother with space?

Hell, if Nintendo is smart, they'll offer the same thing. Not streaming, but keeping a library of your purchases to download at any time, so you can just uninstall any time you need space, and reinstall any time you feel like playing New Super Mario Bros. again.

Hard drives are cheap, but what's the biggest iPhone size these days? 64 gigs? And who fills it up? Crazy people, is who.

Yep, pretty much my thoughts as far as currently announced games are. There'll be more eventually, I'm sure, but I'd only want a Wii U so far for two games that will be released a long while after the console itself.

Pffft. Bayonetta 2 won't sell on Wii U. It'll be on the other consoles within a year. I don't care if Nintendo is publishing. Microsoft publishes stuff all the time that winds up on other platforms, published by other companies.

Definitely not buying the Wii U. I'm pretty sure the GameCube was my last Nintendo console. I don't see them ever breaking out of this cycle of releasing last-gen hardware with a dubious gimmick slapped on it and trying to pass it off as current gen. The value is not there for me and long gone are my days of arguing that Nintendo was the best at the lunch table.

I don't see that in the launch window unfortunately. No Metroid announcement, no Smash Bros, no 3D Mario, no Zelda. No sale.

Kind of indifferent on the Wii U so far, but...

32GB of memory? What year are we in? How do you make a console with no storage capacity with the amount of digital content that is available, and what WILL be available in the months/years to come?

As for Bayonetta 2, i really feel sorry for Platinum Games. This game should be on Ps3/360/WiiU, instead it'll be a WiiU exclusive that will be buried and ignored on a new platform with a low install base. Unless Nintendo is handing PG a big bag of money for it's exclusivity(i severely doubt that) i don't see how this makes any sense for Platinum Games business wise.
