Wii U Does Not Play GameCube Games

Gamecube was my first console. This kinda sucks.

It probably was not reasonable to expect the Wii U too play Gamecube games. The wii's backwards compatibility was miles better than the PS3 or 360 ended up being.

Eh. Not worried about this one. I have a Wii and a GCN and they're both in pretty good shape. I also prefer to play Brawl with the wiimote + nunchuck already, so I'm all set there. ;)

remember the DS eliminating Gameboy games? it's the natural Nintendo progression of backwards compatibly. 

How am I supposed to play Smash Bros. Wii U without GCN controllers? It's personally amazing how much I've chilled on Nintendo -- for many reasons that going into here isn't proper. I would like it if no exclusive titles I strongly cared about came to Wii U/3DS so I wouldn't have to concern myself with them.

Luckily I still have my Gamecube... :)  But it would've been awesome if it could...  Though saying that I don't think that supporting 2 previous generations is asking for too much... :/

Darn it.

No surprise. Backwards compatibility requires a lot of time and extra work. They supported it on the WII. It's time to move on now that they're moving forward.

Especially not when Wii and GameCube were so similar on the hardware level. Couldn't be that much harder to get GC compatibility working when Wii compatibility works. Not sure how I should handle this then, I own neither the Wii nor the GameCube, should I then still get a Wii for GameCube games, and also get the Wii U later? Damn.

Doesn't surprise me at all, but it's still a bummer. I've probably gone back and played Gamecube games more than any other last-gen system. So now even if I get a Wii U (doubtful anyways) I'll need to keep my original Wii to play GC games through component out, cause GC component cables are like a million dollars.

OH SHIT! My interest in new Smash Bros just dropped significantly. Been playing those games with Cube controllers since '01...Man...

You know, you don't need to use a Wii Remote to play Smash Bros. :P

It's about time.  Those FOUR Gamecube ports on my Wii have been useless and it's a step in the right direction for them to take them out and free up valuable space for more valid hardware.  Besides, if I want to play Sunshine, I just get out my Gamecube (but I'd rather play Wind Waker).  

Fuck you Nintendo, fucketh you.

It's good to know I can sell the Wii and dig out my Gamecube and be no worse off. Just traded for a GC copy of Ikaruga last week. That's a good game to play with a Wavebird!

I keep my PSP-1000 as a glorified allofthesethings.

I can kind of understand why it wouldn't, but it's disappointing nonetheless.

hmm, that kinda stinks, but it makes me wonder if that means there's some kind of higher-density media drive in the system instead...that would be cool.

@LordAndrew That is crazy retro. I mean, I have a SNES sitting in my living room right now collecting dust, but I never had one of those GameBoy things for it (my neighbor did though).

I am not really a fan of the new Nintendo Console or anything but this seems like the most petty aggrievance possible, Gamecube games? really? Really?

Aw frak. How am I going to play Eternal Darkness for the 12th time now? 

I can't understand why they put the joysticks above and not below the other face buttons.

Is it perhaps a matter solely of the drive not accepting them or what?

If we bug them enough maybe they will put that functionality back in.   Or put them on the new Wii U online shop.

Oh well. Looks like we'll have to pony up for the Wii version of Metroid Prime.

Makes sense. Things can't be infinitely backward compatible. I'm happy enough that the Wii works with Gamecube games. Even though I initially bought a Gamecube for $30 when the Wii came out since its games seemed far more appealing. I love that little purple box, it's so compact, sleek and lightweight, fits anywhere. The handle is the best part.

I'm surprised anyone expected them to put GC controller ports or memory card slots on the thing. That wouldn't make sense.

Just put your wii console on top of the wii u if it's laying down and it should be easy to switch between the two.

Yet another reason on my long list to stay away from new Nintendo products.

Why would ANYONE play Gamecube games on a GCN instead of on a Wii? Chances are you don't have component cables for your Gamecube because they never came out anywhere but in Japan.

Man, used GameCubes are like $20 - $30.  Where are we supposed to get that kind of scratch?

Well at least this means its not two Gamecubes taped to two more Gamecubes.
