Wii U Does Not Play GameCube Games

You'll have to toss those tiny discs into the closet.

You'll be able to play existing (and perhaps forthcoming) Wii games on Nintendo's Wii U hardware, but if you were hoping to play more Super Mario Sunshine, there's bad news to report.

Wii U will not play GameCube games. I learned this and other details I'll share soon about Wii U during a short interview with Mark Franklin, the head of Nintendo's public relations division.

The only fucking reason there is no   gamecube support is nintendo removed the ports and the OS support to save money and won't let you use wii controlers of any kind  but who cares go biy a fucking game cube I got at least 6 things that play gamecube games  and a fucking gamecube hooked up to a TV.

and you people shoul dbe more fucking conseried nintendo Dodges around Optical Toslink support every fucking time they are asked and that measn some of you people are going to get crap Stereo sound if you fucking reciver does not have a HDmi connection you are fucked (

(IE everybody who bought a cheep 5.1 sound system or have a cheep one a few years old  nintendo is screwing you over by not giving you the middle of the road option its high end  connections or Crap stereo those are your choices.

It probably was not reasonable to expect the Wii U too play Gamecube games. The wii's backwards compatibility was miles better than the PS3 or 360 ended up being.

That's because the Wii WAS a Gamecube.

I can't understand why they put the joysticks above and not below the other face buttons.

Because of how far apart your hands are while holding it, it's actually more comfortable to have the sticks above the buttons. It's sort of weird, but I'd rather have an unconventional setup than an uncomfortable one.

Where did this expectation of being backwards compatible two generations come from?   The 360 was theoretically backwards compatible one generation, but it doesn't even work right with everything, and we all know what Sony pulled.   As far as Nintendo, the Wii was actually the only console (not portable) that they released that was backwards compatible, and as far as their recent portables, The DS played GBA games, but even later models of that same system dropped that functionality.

So, just for future reference:  If you all expect these consoles to be backwards compatible two generations, you apparently have not been paying attention to this industry like...ever.  They are not even very dedicated to making them go back ONE generation.

I'm not saying I like it.  I just don't understand why anyone is surprised.

So those 8 Gamecube games you still haven't played? You gotta go buy a 20 dollar Gamecube to  play them omg such a tragedy. I thought Patrick was above being such an obvious Nintendo troll.

Much like the DVD player argument for the Wii, you can get a Gamecube now for about $30.

Same here. I sold my copy of WW like a dumbass a few years ago, and really want to play it again, but not on a Wii or GC, and not in SD.

I don't think reporting information on a new console is being a troll. It's something that should be reported, even if it's not really that important.

Fine, that would be like asking the original Wii to play N64 games.

Exactly. We ended up being able to download N64 games, so don't be surprised if the Wii U can download GameCube games. You can download PS3 size games now off PSN, so GameCube size games shouldn't be a problem with the Wii U.

Wii U should have GCN support.  It makes no sense to get rid of a whole console of titles and a very unique and functional controller that would sit very well in the arsenal of controls Wii U offers.  Wii never took full advantage of the Wavebird and Nintendo should re-release that damn thing.

We can't forget about the Wavebird!

It doesn't really bother me that GCN games aren't playable but what would be cool is if the GCN greats were to be downloadable off the Wii U shop.

Only game I have for Gamecube...Pokemon Colosseum. I don't think I'm missing out from much. The Wii sucked as far as games go. They're only limited. Most games are geared towards young children. That's not to say I don't play the Nintendo classics like Mario, Sonic, and Metroid because I do. I hope the Wii U will have more games geared towards casual gamers.

@MooseyMcMan:

Point 1: I have a sizable amount of cartridges on my shelf that are perfectly legal for me to play in emulated form. (Where I live, anyway.)

Point 2: Really it should be Marcus that comes to my door and kicks me in the shins. With luck he'll stick around for an autograph and a game of ModNation Racers.

This is fine. I agree with @Praetor_Sean, it is not reasonable to think they would support a system that old. It is too system cycles before.

But what if I want to play WindWaker again - or Ocarina of Time which I do sometimes (would be annoyed if I had to re-buy it on the store to play it and then lose all my saves - already had to do that when the gamecube came out from the N64) - or what about Melee - man I can live without them but it is kind of annoying, I mean removing something the wii does is helping me get the console - I mean losing gameboy functionality on the 3DS also didn't help. It's undrstandable but still annoying.

@YukoAsho: Yeah but having two consoles out as well as the 360 and the PS3 with all the prefirols is annoying - I don't have the space for that - the WiiU is advertising itself on being able to replace the Wii completely with all the games and downloadable stuff and controls but with more games - I don't want to have the WiiU and the Wii out at the same time just to play Gamecube games or use the gamecube controllers on Wii games.

It's not less backwards compatible, technically, since both the Wii and Wii U each support one generation of previous software.

The biggest reason for losing GC compatibility is probably the controller and memory card ports. The cost for these is pretty significant, plus it takes up a lot of space on the console.

I wonder, however, how the GC games will be controlled when Nintendo tries to make us re-purchase them (which they will eventually). Maybe they will reconfigure the controls to fit the new controller, like they did with Ocarina of Time on the Gamecube.

This way it will be a dual win for Nintendo:

1. Save money by eliminating the controller and memory card ports, even though the Wii U is actually able to run the Gamecube games.

2. Make more money by selling the Gamecube games all over again with updated controls.
