Wii U Does Not Play GameCube Games

You'll have to toss those tiny discs into the closet.

You'll be able to play existing (and perhaps forthcoming) Wii games on Nintendo's Wii U hardware, but if you were hoping to play more Super Mario Sunshine, there's bad news to report.

Wii U will not play GameCube games. I learned this and other details I'll share soon about Wii U during a short interview with Mark Franklin, the head of Nintendo's public relations division.

@YukoAsho: Yeah but having two consoles out as well as the 360 and the PS3 with all the prefirols is annoying - I don't have the space for that - the WiiU is advertising itself on being able to replace the Wii completely with all the games and downloadable stuff and controls but with more games - I don't want to have the WiiU and the Wii out at the same time just to play Gamecube games or use the gamecube controllers on Wii games.
I've stopped keeping all my systems out all the time as well, but that doesn't mean you have to toss 'em.  Me, I have everything pre-PS2 in a couple of large tupperware cases to keep it all protected from dust and other shit like that.  When I wanna play a game, just pull it out, play, then put it back.

Gamers need to learn to stop treating these devices as disposable, quite frankly.  Hell, I learned that lesson after Grandia kept shitting out on my PS2.

Guess they'll definitely be selling Gamecube games on the WiiU store.
Not with that pathetic 8gb onboard storage.

Good thing I've got an external hard drive for my PC that can hold more than PS3 and 360 and is said to work for the Wii U and costs like a quarter of what a 360 HDD of comparable size does.

Nintendo hasn't outright said 8GB I believe, but it was among the rumor mill along with the screen controller, and we KNOW Nintendo's stingy with memory and reluctant to do anything more than token Internet efforts, so I'm going with that assumption.

I don't know if that's going to spur 3rd parties to make large downloadable games on the thing.  Even with 250GB hard drives, MS bottlenecks Arcade games at 2GB because of the stupid 4GB model.  I have no doubts Nintendo will push the "lowest common denominator" in their TCU, even if you CAN run games off external HDD.

Really, the only company that got it right was Sony making a huge hard drive a standard for the device.

I'd guess that if the onboard storage is 8GB, they would allow for any downloadable game up to that, and I think most Gamecube games would qualify (though I'm not exactly proficient in this kind of tech stuff, but 360 games are usually less than that on Games on Demand), because you know how much Nintendo loved that fridge analogy.

My assumption is that they'll require the game, on it's own, to be able to fit on the onboard storage, with the implication that anyone that would buy a game big enough to fill it on it's own would buy SD cards or an HDD to hold multiple games. So, like in the Microsoft situation, I think they'd bottleneck downloadable games to 7 or 8 GB.

I actually like Nintendo's approach. For the people that just buy discs and DLC, 8 GB is probably plenty, and the kind of people that buy a shitload of big DLC games for their consoles are more than competent enough to buy a cheap HDD on their own. It's the most cost effective way for them and for their users.

Nintendo always includes their old hardware on new consoles for backwards compatibility instead of doing emulation, so this was totally expected.

Pros:

-It's compatible with 99.9% of the games for most of them consoles (yes, the Wii had some incompatibility with 1, and only 1 stupid shovelware game on the gamecube no one wanted anyways)

-Same with peripherals, most of them if not all are supported (except addons like the gameboy player, which the wii didn't have anyways)

Cons:

-Of course, they run the same way, so no upscaling, no filters, no nothing. They just put the old console into your new one and you can't make it better. It's a shame because some Wii games would look pretty nice at native resolutions of 1080p and filters.

-Like this news page says, there's no compatibility with previous platforms. It's also a shame, because the Wii played, in fact, all previous Nintendo home consoles. And people also believed the Wii was a gamecube with a Wiimote, guess if it was that, there'd be no problem with backwards compatibility with Gamecube.

I was going to buy a cheap Wii anyways before this was even announced and I'm still doing it, because they are cheap as hell now, and this new one is not gonna come for like 9 months at best. Besides, I wouldn't mind if it didn't have backwards compatibility because honestly, everyone has a Wii, they're dirt cheap, and that would probably lower the price of the console and also skyrocket the possibility of just getting away from the whole wiimote party thing they'd been doing for quite some time. Guess now I'll just hopelessly wait until they announce that they will also separately sell standalone Classic Controller Pros with no need of a Wiimote.

I'd like to think you're right, but I can't help but wonder.  Nintendo's approach to anything with the internet has been... Less than stellar, and let's be honest, there's probably more money to be made in HD collections like we're seeing on the PS3 (and I guess on the 360 now with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary).  I think a "new play controls" series like what we saw on the original Wii is more likely, though having a controller with actual buttons might make that more palatable than the Wii push.

Yeah, trying to predict any aspect of Nintendo's online strategy is a fool's errand. There's really no way to tell what they're going to do with it. I'm trying to be optimistic, but I know that they are more realistically going to completely fail with it or be about on par with the PS3's launch network, at best. Your "New Play Control" theory is a distinct possibility, and now you've depressed me.

@Wrighteous86: Not as much as I've depressed myself, quite honestly.  I am sort of part of the problem, though at least I never had the Prince of Persia Sands trilogy or the Sly trilogy before getting those collections.  I just see Nintendo and Co. not willing to pass up the bigger money, especially if Nintendo's internet on the Wii U is as full of fail as the Wii and 3DS.

@YukoAsho: I don't treat them as disposable but I have health problems meaning I have to have the least number of surface sout because I have serious allergy to dust so I have to keep things clean so the more console sI have out and the more storage I need ot have stuff the less I time I actually end up gettign to play games - it's why I am so glad I got the original launch PS3 because it can (And still can) play PS2 games. I love games so the more that I can play with the least number of things out the better and having to have a console in the attic or garage and if I get nostalgic and want to play a game I don't want to have loads of work to get it out - I never sell or throw out my consoles and games too (Really not into trading games in) but this really isn't that biga  deal still kinda hyped for the potential WiiU has it's just when a news story is about something not having something and realising I am likely not goign to be able to play some really great games after I get this console then it is kidna sad.

Guess there's that.  Not a huge deal, but it would be nice not to have a bunch of shit that you have to keep around for these games.  It's part of why I really hope emulation for the Cube and Xbox finally start taking off.  I'd like to be able to pop in my PS2 disc on the PC the way I can with my PS1, Sega CD and Saturn.

And I also have an ol' 60 PS3 unit.  You know the fuckers at Sony actually charge more to repair those?  Normal PS3 repair is $99, but to repair a BC model, you have to pay $129.

Doesn't surprise me much, Nintendo systems have mostly been retrocompatible with a system back-to-back, not more. (Gameboy->Gameboy Advance->DS->etc..)

Guess I'll have to replug the GC. Question is now, will we be able to transfer saves/profiles/etc.. to the Wii U?

I assumed the controller would have a tiny side loading disc slot for independent GC playing.  Guess you can't have everything.  I don't doubt that the modders will work something out though.

I can't understand why they put the joysticks above and not below the other face buttons.

Because of the rectangular shape and size of the controller. Try holding something rectangular and move your  thumbs where you want the analogues to be - it is highly  un-ergonomical and painful to say the least.

Where did this expectation of being backwards compatible two generations come from?
Playstation3 can play Playstation1 games just fine. Also Wii and Gamecube are essentially the same hardware, just one is faster clocked then the other, so whatever can run Wii games should be able to run Gamecube games with very little extra effort. Essentially, since PC emulators can do it, there really isn't a good excuse for WiiU not being able to do it, as it either means Nintendo is just lazy or the hardware is quite a bit less powerful then hoped.

Why would you need GC ports and memory card slots? My PS3 can play PS1 games just fine without any of that, thanks to virtual memory cards stored on the HDD and compatibility between the controllers.

its a greed thing, no question. No one sells you what you already paid for like Nintendo. I played halfway through Pokemon White before i realized it was for the most part no different from Pearl.
the plan it to slightly improve (graphically) dozens of GC games, then sell them to you as digital downloads. Nintendo probably calls it free money.

Great little conspiracy theory there. What you call greed is what I call common sense. For people who don't have a Wii, they get the option to buy loads of new updated Gamecube games that they've never played. For people who have a Wii, then they can already play their Gamecube games on that so they have no reason to bitch.

I mean, I doubt they'll even sell Gamecube games at all digitally, but even in the off chance they did, it's nothing but a good thing. Who are these idiots who will buy a new copy of a game they already own?

Yeah, but if they had a Wii, they also got a free Gamecube alongside it.  They won't if they only have a Wii U.

One of the worst imaginable things a company ever did this generation was Sony removing BC for PS3. It was mean, it was greedy, it was stupid, and it was unfair, especially since it launched with BC already.

Seeing another company do that is nothing to be happy about, and much less defend it.

I guess this doesn't surprise me or make me sad. It's the Game Cube guys, it's getting to the point where you can just own one of those systems for $25 and to expect a company to keep filling in their boxes with old emulation software is getting a bit too much.

really? I was hoping to finally have 1 controller to play all my nintendo games.  I hate having to get out all the old gamecube stuff just to get my F-Zero fix.
