Wii U Will Launch Without a Few Things We Thought the Wii U Would Launch With

TVii? Nope. Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix video streaming? Nuh-uh. Games? There are still games? PHEW!

You mean I'll have to keep using a remote control like some mere commoner? THIS IS NOT THE FUTURE I WAS PROMISED, NINTENDO.
You mean I'll have to keep using a remote control like some mere commoner? THIS IS NOT THE FUTURE I WAS PROMISED, NINTENDO.

It is never a good omen for a console to launch without things that had, up to the few days prior to said launch, intended to be included at launch. People certainly made plenty of fuss when Nintendo delayed the 3DS eShop until post-launch, and I imagine those people will be making equal fuss about the fact that the Wii U, scheduled to release this Sunday, will now ship without several of its multimedia features.

Specifically, the TVii feature, the one big trump card Nintendo's been touting for this new box over the last couple of months, has quietly been pushed to a December launch. Why? No idea. Nintendo buried the information in a general purpose press release touting the console's myriad gaming benefits, and hasn't followed up in the time since the release went out.

Similarly, the system's Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, and Netflix video streaming support will not be available at launch either. Those services will debut in a more nebulous "in the coming weeks" time frame.

While the video services are hardly a deal breaker for most (after all, how many of us already have at least one of those video services hooked up to another console), the TVii features have been a unique selling point for the Wii U since they were unveiled. The service, which allows you to control your cable/satellite television services using the Wii U's GamePad, certainly had people talking for a bit there. And while a couple of weeks isn't a huge delay, it's still kind of crazy that such vaunted features are being quietly pushed back on such short notice like this. It's just weird, really.

Journalists are blowing the delay of these features out of proportion.

Gaming press is anti Nintendo. What else is new.

Calling them a "press" is giving them too much credit.

Yeah those anti-nintendo fat cats probably getting paid by m$ and fony to write legitimate non-inflamitory articles about the competitions new console.

Give me a break guys. He didn't call for a boycott, all he said was the features nintendo promised earlier are not not going to be there for launch. Not a huge deal.

Wow that's disappointing. Hopefully they'll get these services up and running quickly otherwise public opinion may turn sour on the Wii U and, once that happens, it's very difficult to turn things around.

Aren't people still buying Vitas for some reason?

If I gave half a fuck about the WiiU, I'd care about this. As it stands, it's just sort of amusing.

Ouch, disappointing for early adopters. I'll be good until Monster Hunter releases, though... Unless that gets pushed back too.

Whether journos blow this sort of topic out of proportion or not (Alex didn't), these sort of u-turns are prime examples of shady-hype-business, and it's worth highlighting.

Considering these are US only features, I guess I can see why it's not included at launch. The US is a good chunk of the market, but not big enough for them to really focus that hard on it. Europe would have no benefit from those features what so ever, and there's vastly more people in europe than in the US. Not even mentioning Asia, which outnumber both EU and US by a factor of tons.

What I said is only true if my assumption that nintendo and hulu/netflix/whatever work together to develop the apps? If netflix and whatnot can just make the app and launch it, then it's basically out of nintendo's hands.

So Netflix just said they'll still be available on WiiU day one, just not with the TVii integration.

Who's apologizing, and for what? Sorry, these North America-specific features won't be ready until next month? Don't be foolish.

@Nals: but for me it's not a what if, the game already exist. I already know I'm going to play them.

Also when the next xbox is out I'll buy that too. I'll wait with the new playstation, unless what I think is going to happen, happens and it comes out the spring or fall after the xbox.

If you are tight on money then yes, wait. But right now i'll pay $350 to play a game or two. Something else will come, something always comes.

Goddammit, yes - well, I tried, anyway, but GameStop wasn't having any of it, so now I'm out $1500 for all 5. I blame for making me reconsider.

Not really. I was speaking common sense. There's nothing to apologize for. If you don't live in North America, this doesn't even affect you.

If there are issues with the software it's better for Nintendo to get that sorted out rather than make a bad first impression with this stuff.

Im sorry but if people are buying a WiiU to watch netflix they are kind of missing a point, hasnt Nintendo made one thing crystal clear over the years? Their machines are game consoles first and everything comes as additional or bonus content, i know they did a big song and dance about it during the last few Nintendo directs but that feels to me more of a counter attack to the new PSN and Xbox Live front ends.

Dont get me wrong, when those features launch i will use them and i dare say ill wonder how i got along without them, but i have right now, two X Boxes, a PS3, PC equipment and several tablets and phones that all have this functionality as im sure just about everyone else has. Lets enjoy the games for a couple of weeks before we start burning Nintendo at the stake for not giving us yet another way to view netflix ^_^

This is really a deal breaker Alex, a whole f**king month!! Maybe you should give a thought to the rest of the world that probably never gets TVii, since that service only is slated for North America and Japan.

Usually I rally like your articles, but this is just ridiculous, all these stuff is like a few weeks away for you guys, which isn't a big deal, especially since you at least in the end will enjoy it all, unlike more than half of the worlds customers whom as usual gets f**ked in the brownie.

It is still valid to post this news, to inform people they won't be getting those features, and it is still shitty that this stuff isn't coming when it was supposed to. This is stuff that should just be packed into the console already.

It's also worth noting that delays almost always mean a very specific thing: trouble. The kind of trouble that involves a lack of polish or understanding of the job at hand. Usually that results in a poor product/service/feature.

360 launched without reliable hardware but everything worked out OK.

It also came out during a time when there was no HD consoles, for that crowd stuff looking that good was all that mattered so even if Call of Duty 2 at the time looked insane on the PC it was shocking to see it look that good on a console. The Wii U doesn't have that advantage.

One thing to note, Netflix is available, though requires the big system update to work. It's probably my favourite Netflix app though, working just like the website, on the Gamepad.

Hulu Plus and Amazon Video will never work for me regardless, as I am in Canada, and they don't seem to care about us. Similarly, I can only assume that if TVii does function, it won't do much for me either, as I get my cable from a local provider.

@MordeaniisChaos: Of course it's valid to post about it, whats not valid is to whine about it.

And as far as I know Nintendo never said that these features would be there on day one. I really don't get why you're so angry over these things not being packed in, neither 360 or PS3 had these things on day one, but of course the only company that every time they release a console says that there machine is for games should?

But I have to agree with you that the reason for the delay probably is some kind of stability problem, which just makes me happy that they don't crumble under the whiny voices and role the services out just as is, instead deliver the "Game Console" first, and when they have the other stuff in fully working order push them out.

If theres some thing that people should be loudly complaining about it's the day one sys update, I mean 5 GB of your internal storage, so if you bought the white one, after update you should have like 3 GB left, that ridiculous, and thats a thing that makes me happy I'm not one of the guys and gals that has a preorder to pick up on day one.
