Worth Reading: 08/24/12

After a few weeks off, Worth Reading returns with a barrage of games, stories, and links to keep you busy this weekend.

No Caption Provided

Welcome back, everyone!

I’ve been dumping Worth Reading material into a digital notebook for the last few weeks, and we’re filled to the brim with stuff today. I still have a dozen or so links that I didn’t even get to, and maybe some of those games and pieces will sneak back in next Friday.

I mentioned this on the podcast, but I just wanted to take another moment and thank the Giant Bomb community for their support over the past month and change. Few people go through an experience like mine and feel as though they have the backing of thousands. Your comments made me stronger, and this thread was bookmarked on my phone for a solid week, a source of comfort.

It’s been a bittersweet ride, and one I’m hoping to encapsulate in words soon. As a writer, catharsis tends to come from expressing yourself in the medium you spend the most time in. I’ll get there.

Thanks.

Hey, You Should Play This

  • Zenith (PC, Mac / Free) by Jacob Knipfing, Tom Astle, Sylvia Forrest, Tom Lanciani, Evan Gonzalez, Dan Spaulding -- www.arcanekids.com

With the high-definition tweaking of Jet Set Radio on the horizon, I’ve got buzzin’ around on skates on the brain, and the student-made Zenith is an interesting distraction. I’m not sure how I feel about the dude with the big, wacky arms, but after playing Vanquish and Gravity Daze rather close to one another, I’m reminded how much fun a game based solely around movement can be. You can play Zenith with a keyboard and mouse but it’s not recommended--plug in an Xbox 360 controller. Coming to grips with wall jumping is a little tricky, but whereas Jet Set Radio keeps players relatively grounded, Zenith releases the constraints of gravity, and you’ll be flying high. Freedom feels good.

It’s satisfying to know my horror kick doesn’t have to end soon, since October is only a few weeks away. Senscape’s Scratches has been recommended in the past, and I’m more inclined to try it, given how impressive the interactive teaser for its next project is. Rather than just give players another trailer for the long-delayed Asylum, Senscape actually released a playable demo that doesn’t feature gameplay from the finished product, but gives a strong sense of atmosphere. It’s a little jarring to be playing a first-person adventure that, at times, feels like a first-person shooter, but once you become adjusted to swapping screens, you’re quickly drawn into the world. An insane asylum is the perfect setting for a point-and-click adventure, a place of dread and madness that clicking will only make worse.

And You Should Read These

With Nintendo likely revealing the final launch details regarding Wii U in New York next month and everyone’s focus squarely on whether Wii U has a chance in hell at replicating the success of Wii, it’s easy to forget how much trouble the 3DS was in not so long ago. Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo recently sat down with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata to extensively discuss the hurdles facing the 3DS going forward, and I’m surprisingly inclined to agree with Iwata’s optimistic assessment about the future of dedicated handhelds, especially ones produced by Nintendo. The big caveat? Nintendo has not produced the same level of innovative software that made DS catch mainstream eyeballs for 3DS, and that, more than anything, is what’s to blame for 3DS being able to catch fire, decent sales or not.

Iwata didn't let the presence of an Apple laptop and the iPhone do all of his talking. He never said the words "Apple" or "iPhone" or "Android," but when I pointed to my iPhone that was recording our interview and began asking him about why some people think that device is the future of portable gaming, he knew exactly what I was talking about. He knows people wonder about the long-term viability of dedicated gaming handhelds. He cited the arguments himself and proposed that there are people who argue that the period of gaming handhelds "has passed us by" due to the popularity of gaming on "a device that you're always going to be carrying with you at all times"—a phone. He knows that logic is what produces the doubts. "I don't think that opinion is completely nonsensical," he said.

One of the reasons I’ve gone out of my way to play a game like Dragon’s Dogma (which I wound up enjoying) or spent an afternoon with a three-hour 8-4 Play podcast about Monster Hunter (which I still don’t care for) is a desire to better understand the games outside of my usual comfort zone. You may not care for the Japanese aesthetic or approach to design (see: Team Ninja's recent confusing and questionable comments about portraying women in Dead or Alive 5), but there are plenty of people who do enjoy them, so there must be something there. Uncomfortable experiences are a healthy deviation from the norm, whether it’s surviving a nightmare like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, or violating a personal one-hour rule for having fun to give an unorthodox game a longer, closer look.

This cultural chauvinism has reached the point where western game designers feel the need to pontificate about the apparently objective failure of Japanese game developers to design games and tell stories. Nonsense: Japanese game design is valid in entirely the same way as Japanese storytelling and visual art tradition is valid, founded on a very separate range of aesthetic ideals that share few parallels with the Western cultural traditions.

Great having you back, Patrick. And congratulations on the marriage! It's interesting. I'm only 19, so none of my friends have even really thought about marriage yet. The only weddings I've attended were for family friends I knew to varying extents. Seeing the photos Dave put up of his wedding a few months back, and now seeing the photo you have here has given me the warm fuzzies more than most weddings I've attended personally. Anyway, congratulations again. I wish you two the best.

Man, that Nintendo Power article warped my brain. I felt like some part of me shook off a pound of earth and moss and came back to life when I read phrases like "We've managed to beat several games" and "I've solved these games" that brag about the number of games people completed. Top that with letters about kids helping other kids get through the challenge of finishing a game, and my ancient pre-internet self is threatening to explode, Alien style, through my chest.

Nice read on this article, guessing if Patrick or anyone else runs out of horror games, there's always the bundles of Barbie or Ubisoft games that end with the letter Z that are truly horrific (at least to me). Welcome back Patrick!

I like the style of Mercenary Kings but calling it Paul Robertson's style like they do is weird; Paul Robertson is just straight up aping Brian Lee O'Malley's comic art in his stuff, as he was paid to do in the Scott Pilgrim game. I like it and all, it's just weird that he calls it his style.

Robertson's art style was previously used for his short films Pirate Baby's Cabana Battle and Kings of Power 4 Billion %. They sought him out for doing the art for the Scott Pilgrim game because it was a perfect fit for what they wanted to do.

Excellent compilation, as fucking always, Patrick. That Nintendo Power article is cute - I never read it or was really even aware of it (my gaming history is sporadic at best, much to my fuggin' dismay), but it was cool to see decades-old write-ups on why people loved "Nintendo", and why Nintendo was a household name, and even a common noun ("Let's play the Nintendo").

Takahashi mentions it in the article, but the similarities between OnLive and 38 Studios are surprising, with hint of predictive direction for the game industry akin to a Mayan Calendar-esque meltdown somewhere in the near future. I can't imagine gaming would have to suffer an '83-esque crash again, and two companies do not an industry make, but they're definitely harrowing examples to all others.

Also, that video is mislabeled - Scully has been saying "Oh my car" for decades and no one noticed.

"Unsurprising for an Obsidian game, but a whole bunch of stuff was cut from Fallout: New Vegas."

This just makes me angry, really. Apparently Obsidian had a ton of stuff planned for FNV which had to be cut due to time constraints. The thread mentions they packed about twice the content of FO3 into FNV in half the time, and still a ton of stuff was left on the cutting room floor due to the realities of release dates. This article is super interesting if you're into FNV as I am; it explains why the intro scene is some shitty FMV and why Freeside is broken up into chunks and has few inhabitants (thanks, console users!), among other things.

Can someone please give Obsidian all the time they need to develop a PC-only title? Looking at the imagination and dedication put into stuff that was totally cut from FNV shows how wonderful a game of theirs could be if it were given time to reach its full potential. As it stands I really like FNV and much prefer it to FO3, but man, some of that cut stuff sounds awesome. Freeside being one major open location, beggars and pickpockets in the area, destitute inhabitants littered about, and whole host of other stuff not just related to the Strip/Freeside.

Also, fuck you, gaming news sites, for using this info to blast Obsidian. I think what they managed to pull off was a goddamn miracle, what with the shitty engine they had to use and the seemingly ridiculous deadline in which to finish the game. I'm lookin' at you, Kotaku. Shitting on Obsidian has become akin to Chuck Norris jokes and its just lame and unwarranted.

That Edge article about Japanese games is an overwritten piece of garbage. You can tell it's from an Internet commenter because, instead of framing it as just a defense of Japanese game design (and there's a lot to defend there! I don't like a lot of their games, but they're definitely not terrible), he also just needs to use his soapbox to take down the Western games that so offend his sensibilities.

The suggestion that Western games are designed for mere wish fulfillment, in opposition to Japanese games that offer more subtle, nuanced, meaningful experiences, is laughable. That whole article is laughable.

And to top it all off, the writer describes in the last paragraph the most boring possible approach to criticism. I don't want a critic who will half-heartedly approach a game and say "well I have to respect this even though it's not for me." That's terrible. I want a critic who knows what she likes and why she likes it, and can express those opinions clearly and entertainingly. I don't want a critic who will tiptoe around the fact that Japanese game design, though equally "valid" (whatever that means), just isn't fun or interesting for a lot of people.

Also, Patrick, welcome back. I've missed these weekly roundups, even if I usually find something to disagree strongly with in there.

Just looking at the trailer for Zineth makes me wish Sega would a) make a new Jet Set Radio, or let Headstrong make the one they pitched to Sega for Wii years ago. Or b) design a Sonic game like that. Completely 3D (instead of the linear and 2D stuff in Colors and Generations), with a massive focus on just making moving around rewarding, and lots of big jumps and wall runs like Zineth.

I have to play this.

Congrats on getting married Patrick! I'm not your biggest fan, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't glad you weren't here to do Quick Looks these past few weeks, but I'm not going to be a douche here. Congrats are always in order for that kind of stuff. Besides, no matter what beef I have with you work, you still give me stuff like that video up there of two hot blonde chicks playing Elder Scrolls music on enormous harps. So, yeah, thanks for that! And Congratulations.

I still think handheld DS or PSP games are different than iPhone app games, and there's really not a lot of comparison between them. Not yet. PSP or DS games have more of a story and customization than an iPhone game does, and if I have an iPhone or an iPad, games aren't the thing I'm buying them for.

Out of curiousity... Has Patrick posted just a straight up list of horror games he's played and recommends? I apologize if he has and I haven't been paying attention but his fascination with the genre has gotten me back into it as well.

Oh, and if he hasn't posted a list feel free to recommend me games yourselves. I'm more into Lovecraftian horror than anything.
