Worth Reading: 09/28/12

With Cacodads and Cyber Demons on the brain, here's a selection of games, stories, videos, and other random junk to click, read 'n play this weekend. Oh, and a bunch of Halloween movie recommendations.

DOOM 64 was pretty great, and apparently people have made the sprites available for use on the PC. Loses some of its charm, though.
DOOM 64 was pretty great, and apparently people have made the sprites available for use on the PC. Loses some of its charm, though.

I’m hustling to put this feature together as poor Brad tries to finish the last few levels of DOOM II, an exercise one can only imagine will end in tears. Then again, I would have said that about the last Breaking Brad, and he managed to prove me wrong that time.

Watching Brad play DOOM II, though, reminds me about my family’s first PC. After we got one in house, my dad and I went to the CompUSA (that sounds right, anyway) and there just happened to be a giant demon standee for the launch of DOOM II. I’m not sure what I managed to say to convince him that buying DOOM II was a good idea, but we went home with the game and I was obsessed.

I was not, however, obsessed with playing the game correctly. If my memory’s accurate, most of that game was played with godmode on nonstop, noclip cranked to the max--and it was still a total blast. It’s too bad most games have forgotten what it’s like to hand over complete control to the player. Our desire to make sure the player feels or acts a certain way has forced us to lose something in the process. The days of cheat codes, GameSharks, and other hacks fostered a certain exploration we no longer have, and I suspect it's gone forever.

Oh, and by the way, I’ve put my list of Shocktober movies for Halloween 2012 at the bottom. Enjoy!

Hey, You Should Play These

No Caption Provided

Too many games featured here at Worth Reading fall into two categories: horror and platformers. That’s just where my personal interest have fallen lately, but I realize not everyone is as into those types of games as yours truly. I’m going to make a genuine effort to feature different types of games in the coming weeks, so if you have any suggestions or sources for new, weird games, shoot me a message. For this week, we have Demon Decimator, which is a fun puzzler that won’t cost you a dime on Newgrounds, and feels right in the spirit of hell on earth.

No Caption Provided

...then again, I can’t say I’m going to completely leave platformers behind, either. There isn’t much to Skylight, at least in the demo, but I’m fascinated by developers attempting to solve the problem of platforming making sense in first-person. It’s a testament to Skylight that I was freely jumping from space to space in moments. Mostly, though, it makes me desperately want to replay Mirror’s Edge, which is a game I should really get around to playing again.

And You Should Read This, Too

No Caption Provided

Giant Bomb is as guilty as any other section of the Western gaming press for painting Japanese game development with a broad brush of ignorance. For the most part, it’s because their games simply do not appeal to many of us anymore, but then stuff like Tokyo Jungle comes around and I’m reminded what attracted me to the Japanese design sensibility in the first place. I’m convinced much of Japan’s AAA development has been wildly distracted by trying to appeal to a worldwide audience, but one attribute that comes up time and time again is the overtly sexual wide of Japanese video games. I can’t claim much familiarity with it, only that I look at it with the same eyeroll as most others do. Thankfully, we have writers like Jeremy Parish around to enlighten us on what’s happening behind the veil.

If You Click It, It Will Play

I Don’t Know About This Kickstarter Thing, But These Projects Seem Pretty Cool

Valve Just Launched Greenlight, So Here’s Some Games That Don’t Look Terrible

  • Maybe this is why Valve is looking to clamp down on Steam Greenlight submissions.
  • I loved the first Octodad, so I'm a firm believer in the sequel, and it's amazing subtitle.
  • I'm a sucker for a platformer with a clever gimmick, and Contrast has exactly that.

And This Other Stuff, Too

Here's Your Official Lineup for Shocktober 2012

Every year, my wife and I try to cram in roughly 31 movies throughout October. We usually only end up making it through 20 or so, but the goal is 30, and it's fun to aspire in celebration of The Greatest Holiday. I've seen everything, which is why some stuff on here is pretty obscure. I try to strike a balance between oldies that I've either forgotten (The Shining) or somehow missed out on (The Lady in White), while also exploring the best of what other countries have to offer. I've noticed that the UK and Spain have been churning out the best horror the past few years, including Them and [rec]. If you want, here's last year's list, complete with trailers. I'll do something similar for this list soon.

This list is not in any viewing order. Enjoy as you see fit!

  1. The Children
  2. Pontypool
  3. Kill List
  4. The Loved Ones
  5. Angel Heart
  6. Videodrome
  7. Quarantine 2
  8. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Lesile Vernon
  9. The Monster Squad
  10. The Shining
  11. Event Horizon
  12. Cabin in the Woods
  13. The Squad
  14. Tokyo Gore Police
  15. Cemetery Man
  16. The Killer Condom
  17. Human Centipede 2
  18. Pet Sematary
  19. Woman
  20. The Lady in White
  21. Mother's Day
  22. Who Can Kill a Child?
  23. Father's Day
  24. Beyond the Black Rainbow
  25. Grave Encounters
  26. Lake Placid
  27. Frontiers
  28. Dead Heat
  29. Pandorum

I've got a rough list of horror movies lined up for October as well. I've seen a lot of the movies on your list; Pontypool, Videodrome, Behind The Mask and Cemetery Man are great lesser-known movies. I just watched Beyond The Black Rainbow yesterday; it's a little slow and obtuse but worth watching. I feel like it's a better music video than narrative film.

I know we've been racist about games that happened to be developed in Japan in the past, but those Jap games sure is wacky!!!! Wakka wakka!!!

I hope that the Shocktober 2012 movies aren't all supposed to be scary or even good. Cause there are a few baddies on that list.

Actually the hyper sexualization has nothing to do with the western world, it is purely fan service for their japanese and greater asia fans. People forget traditional porno is illegal in japan, hence the cartoon and video game porn.

I found Pontypool to be pretty terrible... Cabin in the Woods is amazing though; I've always had a soft spot for Pandorum (and it's similaritues to Dead Space).

Is the idea to watch one movie a day or do you watch mutliple movies, say, on weekends?

Be warned, Patrick: Tokyo Gore Police isn't a horror film so much as Robocop by way of The Toxic Avenger. It's fucking awesome and out of its goddamn mind in the best possible way, but there's nothing really to be scared by in the film.

Read the japan artical, still think japan is weird. But I also think they probably think the US is weird too, so. Also I love how humans only get a human rating of 40 in that AI story, while bots get a AI rating of 50, uh, someone needs to fix your human.

Videodrome is a sick movie. It's honestly kind of bad, but Chronenberg films are some of my favorite. Even if Videodrome isn't your cup of tea, everyone should see the amazing adaptation of The Fly that he made. It's a masterpiece.

Now I have an excuse to rewatch Videodrome, when I should be watching Die Nibelungen. Whoops.

Holy crap, and I just reread it and saw Lake Placid. That is one of the best bad movies ever.

Regarding Nexus 2 kickstarter - they already tried once (on Games Plant) and failed.

Nexus 1 is one of the buggiest and most poorly tested games I've ever played. The missions are very tightly scripted - and in a number of instances, if you don't do things in the exact order that the developer intended, the game crashes. The crash conditions aren't even that obscure, in one case it's as simple as destroying one particular ship before another. There are at least 3 or 4 missions with scripting related crashes like this. Technical or hardware related errors I can forgive, but crashes due to relatively mundane departures from the script are embarrassing. QA must have been cursory at best.

You can blame the publisher, but there are examples out there where developers have put out unofficial patches because they cared about their IP and their reputation, especially when dealing with a niche game. Nexus devs have not earned the faith I would need to invest in them to put money on a sequel - even though I liked what I played of Nexus before I gave up because I didn't want to deal with game breaking bugs.

These days I probably wouldn't have an issue watching this movie, but I was 15 when that movie came out and it scared the shit out of me. I said fuck that movie and haven't watched it since.

I saw it about a year back and at this point it borders on comedy, the way the Hell scenes at the end go the goth-metal route of the depiction of Hell. The concept itself is pretty retarded as well, in league with The Sphere, IMO.

Cabin in the Woods was pretty good. I also recently watched The Descent for the first time, but it didn't really do anything for me. Hearing people yell "shite" rather than "shit" just makes some of the situations seem kind of funny to my uncultured ears.

I read the Jeremy Parish article and really liked it. Honestly I don't find the idea of porn games to be disgusting, but I do find the sexualization of minors, real or fictional, to be deplorable. Its nice to know that it isn't as big of a thing as alot of game blogs make it out to be.

Thank you Patrick for confirming that playing Doom II with almost every cheat turned on was normal, sort of at least. I played the same way when I was younger and thats how I remember it. Its just not the same game if I can't clip through the wall at the end of that game and shoot John Romero's head on that spike.

REC 2 should always come before Quarantine 2 although I'll admit I saw the US remake. However, given the long list of failed US remakes I feel comfortable saying that. However, Let the Right One In and the US remake Let Me In are both good and are an exception to the rule.

Also, what was retconned from the first film? They were never normal zombies. Don't you remember the crucifix scene? I'm assuming that's what you mean by the way.

The Japanese games article was interesting, though I don't agree all basement dwellers are 'energised' by such content. It's also rather unfortunate that Japanese men are severely ridiculed for gaming. Ocassionally I do like to play Japanese games, not the bad-weird kind, and they have aspects that obviously lean toward those consumers. I hate it when they add perverted things in to cater to that audience. I got ridiculed last year by a thread I started on this site that made an observation about character sounds in FFXIII, but I think some more serious people need to really have a discussion about it.

Checking in to thank you for that Parish article.

It's rather unfortunate, in some ways, how this has all turned out. When I say the most sublime and transcendent emotional climax of any game I've ever played was the ending of Saya no Uta, people first turn their heads in befuddlement, and laugh as I explain the concept of a man, cursed to see the world as a hellish landscape, falling in love with the one beautiful thing he finds (the truth being obviously that SHE is a murderous Lovecraftian abomination).

The game has boning in it, and even the mention of it being a Visual Novel will turn some away in disgust. I get it, even if I don't, but all I really want is for people to understand that true, serious craft and talent can go into 'your creepy Japanese vidya games', as with any other medium.

How did REC 2 retcon the first film? It built upon it, sure, but I don't think it ruined anything from the first one. I am unsure, what you mean by the 'worst aspects of terrible horror movies', too. Sure it was more action focused compared to the tenseness of the first, but I don't think that makes it bad.

Quarantine 2 was awful though, that I can agree on. REC 3 was kinda 'meh'.

As for the rest of the list, good luck getting through Father's Day, I heard that was fairly unwatchable, and homophobic to boot. I've heard Woman (although I think it may be 'The Woman') was tough to watch too.

Glad you're watching Behind The Mask and Pontypool, I love those films. And if you do want to swap anything out, then maybe swap in The Tunnel...? You can download it for free from their torrent, so it's easy to find in case something bad happens logistically. Same thing with Marble Hornets.

That's a pretty solid list, a lot of those are on my "to-watch" list and the ones I have seen are all great. But how can anybody ever have a Halloween list without Trick 'r Treat?
