Xbox Live Achievements, Gamerscores Going MIA [UPDATED]

Microsoft claims issue has been addressed, but users still reporting problems.

Simpler times, friends, simpler times.
Simpler times, friends, simpler times.

UPDATE: Microsoft has issued a statement on this morning's shenanigans, and claims everything should be fixed in a few hours.

"We are aware that some Xbox LIVE members are having problems with their Gamerscores. Affected users should log out and back in to restore their scores. While this should fix the issue, updated Gamerscores may not be reflected on Xbox.com for a couple of hours. We’re working on this and expect it to be fully resolved soon.”

As for achievements earned during the glitched period, Microsoft told me the company is working to have everything restored "shortly."

--

A terrifying scenario presented itself this morning on Xbox Live: if you logged in and earned an achievement, your entire gamerscore was wiped out. Zip, zero.

This specific issue has reportedly been addressed, according to Xbox Support, but there are lingering problems.

“I want to let you know that we're aware of an issue with achievements, and that we're doing everything we can to resolve it ASAP,” said Xbox Support representative Mister Fitzer in a thread.

If you’re one of the people with a suddenly missing gamerscore, and thus missing achievements, the first step is to sign out of Xbox Live and sign back in. If that doesn’t work, try re-downloading your profile. Hopefully that works, but any achievements you earned during this weird period have to be earned all over again. That's unfortunate.

If this support thread is any indication, the issue hasn’t been resolved for everyone, and some gamerscores remain borked. I’ve contacted Microsoft for comment, and hopefully we’ll know more soon.

For now, however, it’s probably best to stay off Xbox Live.

Make sure to report any of your own issues in the comments.

How many of you would not be on the 360 if it lacked gamerscore?

I definitely choose to buy games for 360 over PS3 because of the achievements. And I never spend that much time on PS3 games because I never really figured out how the trophy system actually works.

It is pretty much the same as achievements, besides the fact that you get an extra Platinum trophy for getting every other trophy.

And instead of numbers associated with achievements (5 points, 10 points, and so forth) trophies are divided in three categories (Bronze, Silver, Gold). A 5-10G achievement would be a bronze trophy, for example. Gold trophies are usually the ones for finishing a game (or getting 100% in a game) and would be 75-150G achievements on 360.

On top of all that, you are assigned a trophy level based on your total amount of trophies.

As a primarily PC gamer, I don't really know the joy of achievements (got a couple in GFWL, but not enough so I care about the number). Steam achievements are still relatively new and of course they don't have a numeric value associated (although I'm sure Valve is still thinking about it). Achievements are an interesting concept, but I think Extra Credits nailed it when they said "Don't play games for the achievements: Play through the achievements because they improve your games."

Good thing Journey came out just a little bit ago. I'll play that instead of my planned Mass Effect 3 session.

Buisness as usual. I'm really thinking about how the community helps influence well written articles.

I was playing Deus Ex and got an achievement. I then replayed the scenario and got the achievement again. I don't give a shit about achievements though. Hell. I've had my Xbox 360 for four years and only have a little over 11,000. I was thinking of scrapping my gamertag and creating a new one. I hate the name and I'm not going to pay to change it.

Haven't been on Xbox Live for a couple of days. Apparently it's a good thing I wasn't.

Well the achievement I lost was returned pretty painlessly, so everything seems to be cool now.

This is the part that confused me the most, I think.

Oh noes! Numbers without meaning might disappear!

But, but the numbers-Yeah you're right.

I wouldnt say that its like a history of your game time on the 360. Like getting all 69 Stars in MW2 spec ops, 1550 points in Fallout 3, The Mile High club in COD4, 100% GTA4. You got proof of all the hard achievements you have got I hope MS kept these scores for the next Xbox, they also give you awesome things to do in the game you otherwise wouldnt try like the gnome achievement in HL2 Episode 2 or only use the handgun in Dead Space.

I nearly went insane when I lost my Assassin's Creed achievements. But after deleting and re-downloading the profile my 420 flags were safe.

That kinda pales in comparison to an entire account system losing information on ALL of your games.

I got affected by it before it was everywhere on the web, I just recovered my profile and it totally fixed it - all my achievements are back - but I was getting a little stressed out for a few minutes when an achievement popped that I already had earned in Mass Effect 3 and I saw all my achievements and game history was gone...

I'm glad I woke up at 3PM today so I didn't get to play anything on Xbox yet...but having read this, maybe I should fire up MLB The Show just to be on the safe side.

Still getting the occasional message on the 360 about playing a game on another system like I used cloud saving (haven't lately so no clue), as for the problem I had with the achievements missing or partially showing up, just sign out then back in along with downloading the profile to that 360 & worked for me on getting the gamerscore to show properly again.
