Xbox Live To Blame For Lack of Final Fantasy XIV On 360

And the story remains the same.

If you're thirsty for an MMO experience, don't bother with buying an Xbox 360. It appears that once again, a studio can't come to terms with Microsoft. Square Enix, developer of Final Fantasy XI for the 360, has joined the list of studios that can't break through negotiations for a forthcoming MMO.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Final Fantasy XIV Online director Hiromichi Tanaka pegged, of all things, the Xbox 360's online service as the reason why Final Fantasy XIV, it's latest MMO, isn't coming to the system.

"The main reason why we couldn't go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system," he told the publication during E3. "[Live is] different to the normal Internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice."

There's nothing forward-looking, no cheeriness from Tanaka-san. Final Fantasy XIV Online for the 360 might have been a project, but it is no longer. "Microsoft has a different point of view," Tanaka continued, "they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We're still talking to… We couldn't come to an agreement on Xbox Live," he said.

What Tanaka isn't mentioning is money. But it's plain that Microsoft's MMO policies, both financial and technological, are too nasty for studios to work with.

== TEASER ==I've seen this before. I ran into a similar story in 2008 during an Indianapolis-based event called Gen Con. Champions Online was being demoed for the public there. Its booth, on the left-hand side of a cluttered room with long tables, booths, board games, and Magic: The Gathering peddlers, had several stations, most of which required the use of an Xbox 360 controller. The team was plainly excited about the possibilities of the game hitting the console--and perhaps even the PS3--but couldn't comment on when it would happen. It struck me as odd. Then, at Gen Con 2009, the story of Champions Online console had morphed into something similar to what Square went through with Microsoft.

Jack Emmert, COO of Cryptic Studios told me the game was finished for consoles, but the studio couldn't come to an agreement with Microsoft. It became a legal thing. "We just have to work it out with Microsoft," he told me, months and months before the version was revealed as dead--after it was finished, no less.

No Caption Provided
While that's the best of a few sad examples, there is still Lord of the Rings Online for Xbox 360, a purported version of the game that Turbine has never announced. As the rumor goes, Lord of the Rings Online Xbox 360 was finished in 2009, but Microsoft brass wouldn't let Turbine use a free-to-play model. It's been stuck ever since, even though the PC version of the game will go free-to-play in the near future.

As Eurogamer notes, it's ironic that Final Fantasy XI remains one of the Xbox 360's only MMOs (and one can certainly argue it's the only real MMO on the console). Regardless, I get the feeling that Final Fantasy XI was just a test for Microsoft to figure out how to play with other studios regarding their future MMOs--including even Square Enix, who doesn't want a part of it anymore. It's a bummer, but at least the parties' failure makes it plain that we shouldn't look to the system if we want to play an MMO. Not now, and perhaps not ever.

You normally have your computer at a desk so you can sit down and actually do work while you have your TV in the middle of the living room with all the couches around it. Unless you like doing your work and internet browsing while sitting on a couch or you plan on carting your PC between your desk and your TV then playing a PC MMO on your lounge TV just ain't gonna work out.

@haggis: I don't see it so much as an issue of developers wanting to get "something for nothing" as just wanting some more control over the quality of the service they provide their customers. It was the same deal with Valve only being able to bring steamworks to the PS3. "
You could buy a really cheap computer for a lower price than a new console to do your work on and connect your good computer to your TV. I don't think many do that but it's not that hard to make it work.

Final Fantasy XI was a way to coax Square-Enix to get on board with Xbox 360.  Now that they're in a position of more influence in the video game industry they don't need to make those kinds of concessions.  Standard operating procedure for Microsoft and it should surprise no one.

LCD as it is your 360 or PS3.  When you say anything like; 'yeah but then you can't relax and sit back in your recliner with one hand down your pants and drinking a beer while scratching yourself when you play games on PC', you sound ignorant.  And you are. "
Just because you have the ability to do it dose not mean you want too, I'm a console gamer here, and feel MUCH more comfortable with a contoler in hand than a mouse. And yes you get controlers for you PC but I want it on my console, thats it, end of story, i don't like PC gaming and I'm sure other's would agree that it's just much easier int the end to get it for a Console.

That and you'll have your Memory on the console that will keep your data safe, not a PC who can get hit by a virus or anything at any time. I'm not secure gaming on a PC.

They're just waiting to bust out Avatar Fantasy Online on the masses. You'll find it tucked away in the indie games section where no one ever goes.

The title of this article makes me laugh.  Saying Xbox Live is to blame for the lack of an MMORPG on the 360 is like saying a knife is to blame for a fatal stabbing.  No, MICROSOFT is to blame.  Let's get it right, here.

Xbox live is good for some games but it has been a pain in other areas.  My biggest complaint is when i'm watching Netflix on the xbox and I get knock off Xbox live, what I'm watching on Netflix stops immediately.  There needs to be a exception for certain games and applications to not need Xbox live all the time running.  I guess this sucks for anyone owning a xbox, Microsoft has there ways!!!

I just don't think consoles really work well for MMO's.  I'm only just starting to come around to the idea that they can be used for great muiltiplayer RPG's, so I'm sure something will eventually change my mind about this.  But right now, I haven't seen anything demonstrated on any console that really makes me sit up and want to play it there as opposed to a PC.  Prove me wrong, Square - give me a reason to play it on the PS3, and I'd love to try it.

Yea, MS has really dropped the ball imo.  I like the hardware MUCH more for it being dev friendly, but between the hardware failures, and live its gone down hill.  PSN has mostly caught up to live, and its free.  Also kinda hate the cluttered NXE update.  It should be less cluttered if im paying for the service.  Avatars are just stupid.

I was fine with it when it was about providing a better service, and giving developers free servers for their games, but PSN got their shit together.  I just hate supporting Sony's hardware.

MS should be cutting deals for games like this.  Console MMOs arent my thing, but its a big part of on line gaming.  I shouldnt be shorted on my games for a service Im fucking paying for.  MS really needs to stop looking at the $, and concentrate on providing a great product and service.  It will make them more money in the long run.

MMOs would require MS to allow Silvers and Golds to subscribe to pay them a monthly fee like they did for FFXI and PSU, which MS has been soured on in the past few years with the death of their own Marvel MMO. I'm sure they'd bend over to get WoW on the Xbox 360 but they probably won't allow anything else without a large list of demands that no sensible MMO dev would agree to.

" It has a PC version, and if you have a brain in your head that's the only version to care about. If idiots want to pretend an MMO clearly being made with PC as the lead skew is a sweet PS3 exclusive, let them have it. "
It's SKU. "
Also, the game is being developed very much for the consoles and not for the PC (We are talking FFXIV right?). I was in the alpha test, and will be in the beta testing of FFXIV, and I can say that the game is meant to be played with a controller, they even say "We recommend that you play the game with a gamepad for optimal experience".  Also, why would I play the game on my computer when I can play it on my 53 inch tv sitting on my couch with surround sound on?  Thats a way better experience than sitting in a desk chair huddled over a monitor. "
Just curious as to how the UI navigation is with a controller. I'm guessing it's your typical Bioware style radial menu for skills and such?   How was FFXI on the 360? I can't imagine the control scheme straying too far away from that. Either way after playing with the benchmark for an hour or so, I'd still get the pc version just for mods and more graphical options (I'm assuming), and other features that us PC gamers tend brag so much about. Hopefully it turns out decent on the PS3 too. What would be wonderful is cross platform support. Did FFXI support that as well, at least 360/PC? "
(God GB needs to sort out their replying system.. Took me forever to find this post again because it took me to the wrong page >_>)

Anyways, I can't speak much about the UI since its going to be way different in the beta. The version of the game they showed off at E3 had a vastly improved UI already. Hopefully radial menus or something like that will be added in. Its a good way to handle complex menu stuff.

I never played FFXI on the 360, but it was just a port of the PS2 version, and by the time it made it to the 360 it was already several years old. =P From what I heard the controls on the consoles were very good, and they tried to limit the amount of menus that you needed to navigate.

That benchmark is pretty awesome, I watched it a few times to see how the different characters look.

Oh and as for crossplatform support, its guaranteed. FFXI's versions shared servers (Maybe not the 360 version?), so whatever version you get, you will still be playing with everyone else :)

My plan, assuming it works... Is to buy the PS3 version, and just *ahem* download the PC client. I assume my PS3 account will work for the PC version as well, which will be nice for playing if I have any spare time at university or something.

And as for if the PC version will be better graphically... Maybe. Generally they are... but since they are developing it with the console version in mind... It might be the same. I guess we will know when the PS3 beta starts sometime eventually.

Oh by the way, if you signed up for the PC beta, it should be starting very soon, within the next 2 weeks I'd imagine.

This doesn't really surprise me too much, given some of the other games that have had issues with release on the 360.  Team Fortress 2 and other Valve games, for example, can't have access to Steam or a Steam-like Valve-controlled environment.

I don't see why Microsoft doesn't want people on their system playing an MMO. They would sell a copy of the game, earn some money for software licensing, and not even have to run a server since it would be on SEs shoulders. It must be some sort of complex money-hungriness that is beyond my feeble consumer mind to full comprehend.

Oh well, I wasn't planning on buying it for 360 if/when it came anyway; first and foremost I'll get it on PC, and if the PS3 version supports account Trophies (which I will be earning as I play anyway) I'll get that one too.

FFXI was built with unbelievably smooth gamepad controls. I once ran out of batteries in the wireless one I was using and realized that I never touched the keyboard or mouse to actually play in the 2000 or so hours I had on the PC version at that point. From what I played of the Alpha that same smoothness is transitioning over, so a console version of FFXIV would work fantastically on 360, just like XI did.

This isn't a point-and-click MMO, it's very much an action-oriented Monster Hunter inspired game. Having a controller would be a big deal for this kind of game and like others said, they even recommend you play the PC version with a gamepad.

Yeah, so? I'm still saying that about FPSers. FPSers on consoles is the widest spread machosism on this planet. The best thing players can say is that playing with a console controller isn't _that_ bad (yes, yes it is).

The stubborn refusal to admit that the mouse and keyboard are superior may be the largest retardation in gaming today.

so...A game using pretty much the exact same system *shitty playOnline*, is incapable of being put on 360? even though they put FF11 on it? I call  shenanigans I think Square is just talking out of their asses.

They have no real reason for not putting the game *it will be shitty by the way* on 360, just like FF11 the rules are there are no extra charges for MMO's it can be played on silver so I don't see Microsoft demanding gold for this game either.

And all else is an extra 2 week quality assurance...something Square definitely needs with the state of things on FF11 with most of its stuff.

The PS3 is getting Final Fantasy XIV.

This is just the beginning, it kind of started with Gabe's announcement of Steamworks support on the PS3 version of Portal 2.  I guess Microsoft really wants to nit pick everything that gets updates on Live, and limits the amount of data that can be updated per patch.

I will gladly sit through a long update now on a PS3 if I know that that patch is updating and cleaning up bugs.

And if Microsoft isn't willing to work with Square on this, I guess in some way that is them saying the next proper Final Fantasy game will not be on the 360.  I was thinking that Final Fantasy Versus 13 might have become multiplatform, but maybe not after this. "
Please post proof of Microsoft putting a limit on updates...because...your infact wrong.
there have been huge updates either firmware or game on Xbox live.
So please stop spreading that fud.

Yes, which is why this is stupid.  I can see the problems, the dev wants their monthly fee, and MS requires all online gaming on 360 to be paid via Gold.  This means that playing the game on 360 costs more than playing it on PC, but if they lower the sub cost for the 360 crowd then the PC players will complain that they are paying more than the console people for the same experience (even though I would argue that playing an MMO on a PC has far more benefits).  It's a sticky situation that inevitably comes down to someone having to ask for less money or possibly alienating a segment of users.  At the end of it all I think this proves that MMOs on consoles will just never work, and frankly it's in the best interest of PC gaming to keep MMOs on PC since it's one of the few remaining genres that are exclusive to that platform.  And dude, all these references to Gen Con are flagging the nerdiness of Mr. Nicholson.  Next you'll be talking about what paints you use on your tabletop miniatures. "
No...you do not have to pay for Gold to play FF11 you can play it with a silver membership.

@WilliamRLBaker:  you need to learn to read properly and between the lines before getting all bent out of shape, the article already states Square has FFIX in the 360 and that it seems Microsoft didn't like the fact that to access FFIX you only needed a free LIVE account, see they want a piece of the pie by making mmo's part of the pay to use LIVE and developers don't see eye to eye with that as customers will feel obligated to pay for 2 services just to access their game.

get it now? or do I need to bring out the crayons?

Oh and to all saying "360 don't need MMO's" I say grow up, if it was announced to be happening you would be flaming Sony fans with "another lost exclusive" etc.. but since so far it isn't "360 don't need it" right?

@Dany: From my understandings it didn't work very well at all.  It was a straight port from a PS2 game to a console that was brand new.  Plus when people were reviewing the game, they reviewed it comparing to the modern MMO's at the time.  Still though, I wish Microsoft would stop being to picky about LIVE at times and just do this already!

is this really surprising?

Netflix is a PERFECT example.

on PS3 and Wii (I have all three consoles and Netflix discs for PS3 and Wii) all you need is the Netflix disc...and pay nothing extra other then Netflix's standard monthly fee.

on 360 you HAVE to have Gold in order to simply have the convenience of no discs..you can't even opt to just use a disc and have Silver....

So is it really surprising that other then FFXI all "planned" MMO's never made it?

Whenever I hear word that people still flock over onto the 360 to play with they're friends over Xbox Live, I often wonder "Your still paying for this sh*t?!" At one time Xbox Live was the place to go for online gaming, and paying for the service was a necessary evil to have a good time with friends. Now, however, PSN has just about caught up to XBL very fast in only a few short years. And the requirements for the price of entry is nothing. Even the games run just as well on PSN as they would on other services. The only thing your paying for on Xbox Live, besides the bandwidth, are features such as the newly announced ESPN, Twitter, Facebook, and Last.FM. All of which I can get on my cell phone, computer, or PS3 for free. So the question still remains: Why pay for this sh*t?

They charge way too much for so little offerings with their Live subscription, but you HAVE to pay it if you want to play online at all. Or how about forcing people to buy more points than they need to buy overpriced DLC? Modern Warfare 2 Map pack for $15? ....   $15 FOR 5 FUCKING MAPS!?  I'm glad I'm not THAT stupid.

I have a 360, but I see crap like that and it makes me ashamed to even own one. And yes, the disc noise is way too loud, it only took them 5 years to get it sorted out. Once an interesting PS3/Move bundle comes along (Probably Socom bundle) I will hardly touch my Xbox 360. Why? Because I'm sick of gamerscore whores and Microsoft points. It will be there for exclusives, but as for common console games, PS3 will be my main squeeze.

I got all consoles so no, besides... I didnt say PS3 was worse, I said the 360 is awesome and it is. The PS3 lacks games and the multiplats are often better on the 360, if they would release games closer to the jap market like more strategy RPGs and such I would be all over my PS3 alot more than I currently am, sadly becaue of region codes I hardly get a sniff on whats out there in the japmarket. The 360 is a console closer to western markets and it shows in how many western games are being developed for it. I love many of the PS3 exclusives though, but they aren't that many out there, not in the tempo im devouring games anyhow.

Besides you seem to be most upset about economics, I hate to be the one to tell you but Sony and Nintendo is after your hard earned cash too, they just have a different strategy......

Listening to your rant I would say YOU are the fanboy though and everybody else reading this thread will probably see that quite clearly :)

In all honesty I'm a PC gamer fanboy above all else. I'm not afraid to admit that either, because I know beyond a reason of a doubt that PC is superior and always will be.

And it's not an issue of who is after our money, because they all are. That's obvious. The problem I have is with how Microsoft runs their console business. The way their marketplace is run is ridiculous.

You want to buy this game for 400 points but you only have 200 points? Looks like you're going to have to buy 400 points pack so that you have enough to buy your game. And the same applies for DLC. Nintendo does the same thing.

PS3, and/or most PC distribution platforms won't force you to pay extra money for something. You pay the flat fee that the item is priced at. No more. No less.

The other issue I have is paying for a Live subscription because Nintendo, Sony, and the PC market all have free online. The only time it doesn't is when there is a subscription fee, and most all those games are MMOs.

If you must know, the main reason I bought a 360 to begin with was to upgrade from PS2 for Final Fantasy XI. I was already playing it on my PC too, but I didn't want to tie my rig up while I idled my bazaar. The 360 graphically is superior to PS2, obviously, so i figured I'd be in the market for current gen games too, so I picked it up. I would have went with a PS3 then and there, but FFXI wasn't available.

The thing is though, you didn't need an Xbox Live Gold account to play FFXI online, you could do it on a silver account. Sure I had to pay a subscription to FFXI, but I was already paying for it. If I would have had to buy a Gold subscription too, I wouldn't have bought the 360.

" @WilliamRLBaker:  you need to learn to read properly and between the lines before getting all bent out of shape, the article already states Square has FFIX in the 360 and that it seems Microsoft didn't like the fact that to access FFIX you only needed a free LIVE account, see they want a piece of the pie by making mmo's part of the pay to use LIVE and developers don't see eye to eye with that as customers will feel obligated to pay for 2 services just to access their game.  get it now? or do I need to bring out the crayons?  Oh and to all saying "360 don't need MMO's" I say grow up, if it was announced to be happening you would be flaming Sony fans with "another lost exclusive" etc.. but since so far it isn't "360 don't need it" right? "

Where in the article does any one at Square, or any other company say that they had to start using gold service only? no where thats where no where in the article is it said, and no where is it hinted by any company the only thing close is turbine saying Microsoft wouldn't let them do a free to play model which is completely different then Gold service usage.
Free to play=equals free to play and reliance upon mostly crappy additional stuff that's charge for to bring in the money.

Infact they say it right in the article.
""What Tanaka isn't mentioning is money. But it's plain that Microsoft's MMO policies, both financial and technological, are too nasty for studios to work with.""
those policies are that one needs silver only to play mmo's its been that way forever since the original xbox you didn't have to pay for an account if you paid for an MMO, content is paid for by the consumer, if not then its paid for by the developer, there is no such thing as a free lunch some one has to pay for it. Developers need to stop expecting Microsoft to take on the cost they are here to make money, If the developer wants that stuff offered for free then they should pay for it. and A developer must put all content through a 2 week QA course before its released...and that's just smart any company should jump on the chance of putting content through additional or even its only QA.

So please don't act like there is any thing between the lines there is nothing there, There is no hint of any changes to silver membership usage. There is the fact that Square doesn't want to use a closed network, and likely wants Microsoft to shoulder all the charges for every thing. And yet on ps3 and PC they like valve are going to have to end up doing that anyways. Which is why valves claims and Squares now make no sense.

Square wants an open network, Yet put FF11 on the system without a single problem, seems to me they are talking out their asses and it comes down to a point where they want Microsoft to pay for every thing instead of putting out any additional money them selves, yet on ps3 and PC they are gonna end up doing that anyways with ps3's regulatory charge on megs or gigs of data and the hosting and such of every thing, and on pc the hosting, Much like valve will have to pay the regulatory charge and all their own hosting and every thing.

forcing people to buy more points then needed? um your not forced to do that, I've not overpaid for dlc in a long long time Because I'm actually ""smart"" I go and find the options let alone the changes with MS points recently, I can boot up my zune software and buy points from there which has a 800 and 1200 point option, oh and then there is the fact that there are quite a few items on PSN for under 5 dollars, but the minimum you can put on your wallet on psn is 5 dollars...
MW2 mappacks...are the same price on psn..

I have a link to a particular test a few years ago showing the 360 is not the loudest, I cannot hear my ps3, 360 or wii over my surround sound system or my tv's speakers both at some their lower sound ranges.

All this is pretty much the reason you saw Gabe Newell on the Sony stage a week ago.

Paying any money for extra maps isn't smart. It's god damn idiotic. That's like I said, PC gaming is where it's at. Free maps, all the time. Mods galore. Free as well...  Ever since the Boom of DLC, a lot of companies have been getting worse with regards to Content:Money.

Activision is one of the worst. They charge way to much money for what you get in their map packs and their prices keep going up. Granted there are games that give you substantial amounts of content for the price tag. Liberty City Stories, for example, had two separate DLC packs and both had a lot of content for what you paid. Then look at Borderlands. Gearbox gave shit to nothing for content in their first two DLC packs. The third one was much better, but it's a shame it took them so long to get a DLC pack right. Mass Effect is another prime example. They're getting better at how much they give you for the price tag, but there are still times I feel cheated in regards to how much I got for paid DLC.

My stingy self might be caused by the fact that I'm deeply rooted in PC games and have been for a long time. To me, a lot of this extra content has rarely been charged for. There were expansion packs, but those were the same hit or miss for content. I generally stayed away from them unless I was heavily invested in the game in question. I will say this. PCs are louder than any console if you don't treat it right. The problem with this test is he's measuring the wrong location both times. Most of the sound on the 360 comes out of it's back end because it has the ability to stand up right, so the bottom and top sides aren't really designed for ventilation.

As for the 360 not being very loud.. If you have a defective xbox, your disc tray could produce sound like a blender. This doesn't take into account the fan in it too. That can get loud if your console is constantly overheating. The original ones were the worst. Mine RROD 3 times before I gave it up and got a new one.  On top of that, not everyone has sound surrounding them when they play. If your sound comes out of the TV speakers and your console is in the same place you're going to have to crank the volume or you won't hear it. Even the Elite I bought has loudness issues. It's not like I did anything to it either. I took it out of the box, turned it on for the first time and sighed. Its fan is just as loud. Mind you the disc tray isn't shit this time.

In regards to the Microsoft's points system. I haven't been following it because I'm not currently near most of my stuff and haven't been for a months. So I haven't been making purchases with points and am unaware of any recent changes. The problem I have with the whole thing is that you have to buy points in the first place.

Making us jump through hoops to hand-cuff some of our own money onto the system is fucking bullshit. It should essentially be a dollar sign tied to the item, one that you charge to your credit card when it comes time to make the content purchase. I'm not feeling the whole buying points so you can have them available when something (could be a random purchase) comes out. It's utter nonsense. And saying I post false shit is lol. I have no reason to deceive anyone and I'm not a troll. I don't see where false shit comes into play, at all.

Anything other than an FPS MMO is dumb as fuck on a console anyway.
Though I really do want to see a "BorderWorlds" MMO
