Xbox Live To Drop Original Xbox Support This April

Better get those last few games of MechAssault out of the way now...

Microsoft has stated its intent to discontinue Xbox Live service on the original Xbox console on April 15, 2010. The announcement comes in the form of a blog post addressed to Live members from Xbox Live's general manager, Marc Whitten

This move will extend to Xbox 360 owners, as well, meaning that original Xbox games that run via the 360's backwards compatibility feature as well as digitally downloaded Xbox Originals will also stop functioning online on 4/15. Offline play in games for the original Xbox should continue without issue, so feel free to break out that copy of Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus that I know you're sitting on.

The reasoning behind this move hasn't been completely spelled out, but the gist of it's right here:

To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games. We will contact the Xbox LIVE members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your LIVE messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities. We view you as a partner in this process.

Whitten goes on to say that more details will be available "soon." Last year, Patrick Klepek over at G4 reported that continuing support for Halo 2--by far the most popular online game for the original Xbox--was preventing Microsoft from raising the limit on Xbox Live friend lists. Microsoft hasn't confirmed whether or not this is, in fact, the case. Currently, the list is capped at 100, as it has been since the service's launch back in 2002.

I don't think I've touched a game for the original Xbox since 2006. How about you?

Ha. I waited in line at midnight too. I wasn't planning on it, but my friend was, and I was going to pick it up anyway the next day, so I figured I might as well. Anyway, I also bought the collector's edition but was glad I did. I really liked Halo 2's original box art, but then like a month before it's release, they modified it a bit and the final version was much less awesome. Because I didn't like the final standard box art, I was glad I got the collector's edition. Oh, and dude, you missed nothing in that DVD. Seriously, it was probably the most boring thing I've ever watched. I couldn't even finish it. It made me feel bad for the designers, and dude, it kinda shows some snippets of the awesomeness that Halo 2's campaign was supposed to be but wasn't. It's always disappointing to see things like that.

Anyway, I tried to add the box art pictures to show you the difference, but apparently the new layout has that stuff kind of screwed up. I wasn't able to do it.

Also, I've learned that collector's editions really aren't usually worth the extra price.

I misread the title and thought they meant that I wouldn't be able to play my offline games. When I realized it was online only I was like "oh fine whatever. Why the hell would I go back and play that?"

I've played a few here and there, but the only reason for using my old Xbox was for Marvel vs Capcom 2 until it came out on XBLA.

However, if people start to get excited about playing Cat and Mouse in PGR2 or something crazy like that, I am all in.

This just sucks.  No more 3rd strike.  It is just stupid that we get half-ass emulations, now we don't even get the option of playing online.
Couple this with the fact that a bunch of EA games don't even work online anymore, I just don't understand what is going on, or why we as users are allowing all of this to happen.  Doesn't seem acceptable to me that a game is unplayable because a publisher says so, and not because the player base says so due to lack of demand.

What's really sad about this is that I've had my 360 for 3+ years and never had a friend on my friends list..

Huh. I'm sure there's gotta be a hearty handful of Halo 2 players that are going to be disappointed. Can't think of anything else getting any play time.

Truth be told, I had assumed OXbox games already lost Live support; especially given the spotty backwards compatibility.

As a huge Burnout 3 fanatic, Im extremely saddened and disappointed in Microsoft for making this decision.

Games like Halo 2, Burnout 3, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Crimson Skies are what MADE xbox live so successful, and now they want to kill them off for the sake of a larger friends list?

There has to be a better solution. I for one, will fight this decision with every single ounce of my being - I might even cancel my XBL subscription entirely if they really do this.

I find it weird to know that a single game has single handedly stopped Microsoft from expanding the friends list beyond 100...

But to be perfectly honest you never really play with all of those people. I find myself removing more people than adding nowadays once I get my regular gaming group together. Still, there's a demand for it so Microsoft will probably look into that. Not like its all that hard to expand the friendslist.

According to Bungie's stat tracking, only about 3000 people have been playing Halo 2 online, and that's by far the most popular original Xbox Live title.

We know that the support for old Xbox titles has been holding back progression the current system in certain areas, particularly with the amount of friends you can have/clan support.  So if axing these old games makes way for improvements in new ones, I'm all for it.  How long before we see a Halo 1/2 HD double pack anyway?

Every once in a while I'll pop in an original Xbox game to see if I can play a round or 2 online and there's never anyone on.  Nobody should be mad at Microsoft for nuking a ghost town.

If we're doing a server closing party on Crimson Skies though, I'm totally in!

I think I've played Gladius once since I got my 360, but it doesn't support Monopoly Party, so why bother?  If this helps them go on to bigger and better things (for no additional cost) I'm all for it.

I did play some THPS 2X a few weeks ago. I don't think there is an online component for that, so I'm good.

I wonder if this means that they will be pulling any Xbox originals that have some sort of online component from the marketplace. You can't really sell things that aren't fully functioning

Nah, the only one I've played was Dreamfall and that doesn't require Live to play. They can shut it down for all I care.

Also, Halo 2 sucks. Just kidding of course.

Oh man, I need to get some final Crimson Skies and Battlefront games in.  Those were my favorite Live titles!

I'm sad, but it's for the best.  Time to move on and upgrade Live to it's full potential.

While I'm sad to see it go I'm also surprised they're still supporting the online for those games. I too don't think I've touched an original Xbox game at least on Xbox Live since 2006.

I can understand not continueing Live for old boxed games but for old Xbox games on Xbox Originals? That seems a little sketchy because that stuff's still being sold. Someone could buy an Xbox Original today and find out he couldn't play it online even though he bought it because he remembers how cool the online was, ect.

I don't care one way or another about this. The only original Xbox game I have is Dreamfall, and it's single player. And I haven't played it since the summer after the 360 came out, when the number of games coming out was still a bit anemic. They could completely drop backwards compatibility and I wouldn't much care, though I know others would.

Count me among those who thought they phased out online play for the original Xbox a long time ago. I actually thought they did this when they released the new Xbox experience. In any case, when you play a game online and it's attached to a service, you have to know that someday it will all come to an end. The 360 has been out for four years now. I'm not surprised they're ending it. As for new Xbox 360 features ... meh. More friends on the list? I only have two anyway. I don't much care about it.

This kind of sucks.  I understand why they are doing it, but it sucks to have old games lose features.

Crimson Skies, Mech Assault,  and Wolfenstien are all still great games.  Though I admit its been quite some time since I played any of them.  Guess its time to dig them out and fire them up.

It's because of you I can't play X-Wing Alliance or Flight Simulator 2002 online anymore. Now they are shutting down Xboxes as well!

And this is the way it goes from here on out.
Every game announced with online multiplayer, will inevitably have another announcement saying you can't play that anymore.  Software has a lifespan, regardless if you own a disc or a download.  It's been happening for a long time, but now it's happening to Halo.  So it's real. ;)

Interesting that the friends cap is the issue players pick up on the most.  2 things:

Who really plays with all of the people on their friends list?   Microsoft said the average was around 30 anyway, and increasing over 100 seems strange.

What else could Microsoft have up their sleeve?   Live Anywhere?  Microsoft support/published MMO?

Personally I'm all for an infrastructure improvement even if it means the sacrifice of this group of games being Live enabled.  Too bad it will mean a loss of all of those other things like prescence and friends list on Xbox1 games though.
