Yeah, So, Shadow of the Eternals Is Back on Kickstarter?

Precursor Games is apparently taking the lyrics of Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" to heart.

No Caption Provided

Giant Bomb doesn’t cover many Kickstarters, but the will-it-or-won’t-it nature of Shadow of the Eternals, pitched as a spiritual successor to the beloved Eternal Darkness, has continued to capture my attention.

It’s also returned to Kickstarter today with a new funding goal and a singular story.

But let’s remember where we came from.

I hope they get the funds to make this game, cause I want to see how it turns out. I'm not going to pledge anything of course, I'm not stupid.

It's gone a long way in just a few hours. Considering that they are wanting $750k they still have a way to go, but its off to a nice start.

Someone on Twitter pointed this gem out:

Pledge $5,000 or more

CHAMPION SUPPORTER

=============================

Work with Precursor to DEMO THE GAME AT AN EVENT like E3 (Los Angeles), PAX (Seattle), or GDC (San Francisco). Must be able to arrange travel to the location.

=============================

So give them $5k and they'd be happy to let you demo their game for them... but you have to fly yourself there to do it. No mention of if they'll at least give you a couch in their hotel room to sleep on.

I'm still interested to see how this game turns out but this whole thing has such a pungent stink on it I would never back the project.

Uhh, that's how it almost always works. Project Eternity's top tier reward is $10,000 and includes an invitation to the developer launch party for two people, but you still have to pay for travel and accomodations yourself.

To be fair, rhat's pretty common, I think most KS do that. You also have to pay for international shipping yourself if you buy anything that needs to be shipped.

@abendlaender: International shipping I know about (I'm in Canada), but the tier I quoted is about you going to a game event to demo the game for them... and you have to fly yourself there to do the demo ;)

I think the crazier part of that whole thing is the idea that demoing a game at E3 is some high honor. From what I understand, that's kind of the worst possible way to experience the event. Granted, if you have multiple people, maybe you can cycle off and go around the convention floor, but prize-as-written the incentive seems to be "PAY us to work FOR us!"

Yeah you always have to pay for travel or whatever but usually what you're paying to travel to is a party or a hang out session. Not paying some stupid amount and then paying again to travel to demo their game.

Patrick, thanks for clarifying exactly WHICH version of Tubthumping it was as I consider Philip Glass' version to be THE definitive. Chumbawumba's is good too, though.

Seriously, though, if these guys stopped fundamentally changing what their goals and methods were, it MIGHT assuage some people's concerns. How do you go from needing 1.35 million for ONE episode to needing just 750K for the ENTIRE thing?? NOTHING about this sounds on the up-and-up.

But for people with that kind of money, a few extra dollars for travel and lodging can't really be that much of a problem.

The last thing a journalist wants is to be given a demo by someone who's getting their hands on the game for the first time, either. I'm sure this is more of a "Hey, hang around the booth if you like and meet people, or wander off and check out the rest of the show if you want" kind of thing.

Yeah, I certainly hope so. Or maybe the backer is just playing the game (silently), while an actual dev is doing all the talking or something.

Even then, I imagine the backer would find playing the same vertical slice over and over pretty boring after about the 2nd playthrough.

Damn it, I pledged. I had no intention of doing and have been unhappy with how Silicon Knights conducted themselves and with the way the whole set up of this new company played out.

But I loved Eternal Darkness, Twin Snakes and even the unfairly derided Too Human. And the pitch video sold me. "Story driven third person action adventures" are my favourite genre. We need a shorter name or acronym though, SDTPAA is not going to catch on :)

If you're a huge fan of Eternal Darkness, I understand why you'd probably still commit money to this Kickstarter, but for the vast majority of people, I don't think you can overlook how horrible the handling of this whole thing has been.

To be fair, a lot of this doubt isn't necessarily their fault. Maybe the Kotaku article was irresponsible and inaccurate...but also, maybe it wasn't. The bottom line is that these guys should've known the potential risk of having Dyack and other assorted SK employees at the forefront of this thing. Also, none of that explains the awful way they killed any chances their Kickstarter had by introducing a second crowd funding source.

The kickstarter came after the funding on their website was open. Many people didn't trust the site and wanted them to open a kickstarter, which they did.
