Yes, Resident Evil 5 Has A Mercenaries Mode

Capcom finally cops to the existence of this requisite bonus with some new screenshots and video.

Capcom had been keeping this not-so-secret secret under wraps--but now that Resident Evil 5 is out in Japan and it's being plastered all over YouTube and other video services, they've thrown open the kimono on the game's bonus Mercenaries mode. Here's one of the Mercs videos they put out today, starring everyone's favorite dashing S.T.A.R.S. member, Chris Redfield.

(Head over to the videos page to see the other one featuring new co-op hottie Sheva.)

If you didn't play Resident Evil 4 (shame on you), Mercenaries is the sort of time attack mode that opens up when you finish the main game. It throws you into one of several enclosed maps from the story mode and makes you kill zombies and other nasties as fast as you can while the short timer ticks down. The trick to getting high scores is in getting kill combos by murdering enemies as fast as you can without breaks in between, and there are lots of time-extend and score-amplifier power-ups all over the place to help you meet that end.

Due to the short time limit and the glut of enemies, Mercenaries is MADDENING but also a ton of fun. My cousin and I still play the mode every year when the family gets together for the holiday. We never have gotten five stars on every level to unlock the all-powerful hand cannon (partially because we switched from the GameCube to the Wii version at some point), and now that RE5 is upon us, we very possibly never will.

At any rate, I'm beginning my run through RE5's story mode today, so we'll be back with the final verdict on the game around the time it launches next week, on Friday the 13th.

that's cool, but i wouldn't say they're needlessly limited either. sure they are when it comes to realism, but resident evil has never been about realism. the controls make perfect sense for its style of play.

Do you guys know the difference between a specific game design and something that is DATED? You could run and shoot in side-scrollers from the 80s, RE1 came out in 1996 and was probably the first TPS game to use the stand-and-shoot mechanic. According to your moronic logic, what's dated now? One of the main reasons why many people love RE 4 (and soon 5) over Gears and Uncharted and every other, quite honestly, STANDARD shooter, is because it plays so slowly and so differently. It's not meant to be Gears, its meant to be RE. It's not meant to be Dead Space, it's meant to be RE. If you don't like the mechanic, fine, just don't go around whining 'OH, ITZ DATEDZ CAZ I DANT LIEK IT D:D:D:D:D:!!!!!111OONE!!!'. Resident Evil is its own genre, it doesn't need to be every-other-shooter. If you want your every-other-shooter, quit crying and get yourself one. There are tons of them out there, all of them very modern and unique and definitely not dated at all."
I just plain don't like the controls.  I think I've used the word "dated" before to describe them, but I agree with you here that it's not the word to use, it's just different.  The reason I don't like to play this game is because the controls feel needlessly limited, which makes it frustrating in the game trying to do something so basic and not being able to.

I completely agree with Light_Geiger.  RE5 is not Gears, and certainly isnt meant to be...The combat is absolutely meant for strategic placing..taking shots when you have room, creating room to take a shot.  Dead Space and Gears are fantastic games, its just that a comparison of those games to RE5 just doesn't work.  Either way with all the hate for RE5 so far, it really does not make a difference....for me this game is going to be amazing.

What's with all the hate?! This is RE4 with co-op. Exactly what i wanted! Plus this is supposed to be the end of this story. they are rebooting the story it with the next one. Pretty sure that means a control overhaul as well, the producer has pretty much said as much on 1up's cover story. RE was never meant to be like gears anyway.

If you want RE that lets you move while you shoot, try dead space, or lost planet. To be honest, I look at combat in RE more like a puzzle. you need to constanly think of how to best position yourself to attack instead of shooting randomly like in most games.

Unlocked the handcannon in the PS2 and GameCube version.  I should probably do it on the Wii version to warm up.  I'm starting to think that leaderboards in this mode might be my new habit.

All I care for is the story mode. I tried this mode in RE4, and it was fun, but not something I would play too much.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there a Mercenaries mode in the PC version of RE 3? RE 4 wasn't the first time they had Mercs mode... (if I remember right)

Demo was terrible, but I'm thinking about still giving this game a chance. I have been proven wrong by terrible demos, even though this isn't enhancing my interest in the game.

I wasn't impressed by the demo. The game still doesn't play like a true third person shooter, which may have been fine back in '04, but I'm not going back to that now.

That's awesome that it has online co-op. I never enjoyed it too much in RE4. It was a cool bonus and all, and I guess I had some fun with it, but I'd rather just play through the campaign again. And again. And again and again and again.
