Yoshi's Real Name Is...T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas?

My entire world has been turned upside down by this revelation.

This is too weird not to share! Console Wars author Blake Harris has been going through a Nintendo Character Guide from 1993. It's meant to instruct folks on the who, where, and what of Nintendo characters.

Amongst a bunch of other interesting tidbits Harris has been tweeting out, the book contains biographical information about Yoshi, and it's revealed the dino's real name is--wait for it--T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas.

I'm not sure if I like Yoshi more or less because of this revelation.

It's worth noting that Nintendo has been adamant, on numerous occasions, that just about everything you see in official guides, books and manuals on Nintendo "canon," specifically Mario "canon," is totally false.

So....

Do we need to change the name of Yoshi's Island to T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas' Island now?

It's collectively owned by the entire species of Yoshis.

So, Mario isn't even human? Craziness!

This is by far the bigger revelation.

Right?

Wow, I love that Nintendo created scientific names for species.

Wait, so T. Yoshisaur is also named after his species? That's it. I'm changing my name to J. Human Eatsometacos right now.

Princess Toadstool also apparently "wields white magic."

"Munchakoopa"

I don't know what to think anymore.

I also take issue with Americans pronouncing it YO-she. Yoshi clearly says Yosh-ee, as do most people in England.

wait, really

No, it's actually pronounced Yosh. Like, if you were Yoshi's friend in high school and you were like, "Hey, Yosh!"

I'm not kidding. That's actually how it's pronounced in Japanese.

Don't know if this is just an obscure japanese language joke, but I still had to comment on it. While the word よし (yo-shi) can be pronounced Yosh in japanese (when meaning OK or All right), that's obviously not Yoshi's name. With correct japanese spelling Yoshi is named ヨッシー which directly translates to yosshii, but is pronounced YO-she.

But without the English diphtongized "o." I guess that's where much of that confusion comes from.

Right, because after Yoshi you just have to ruin sandwiches too.

Please. Even Cara Ellison could tell you that is clearly a taco.

With this revelation and Miles "Tails" Prower coming before that, how many other characters have been without their full names?? What if Kirby is really Leeroy Kirbicus McPuff?

Posted by Mento

Munchakoopas? Is that Polish?

Also, I guess we need to add another rule to this new ruleset prohibiting users from calling Nintendo fanboys "homo nintendonus".

(Talking of which, let's keep our criticism of Patrick's article constructive, if indeed you have something critical to say. Personally, I would think that any and all new Yoshi information is important to Jeff Gerstmann's vision for this site.)

Exactly. I'm surprised that members of the top Yoshi's Island fansite on the internet would react negatively to this article.

@alistercat: When spelled out in kana, it's pronounced Yo-Shi. Don't fuck with Japan.

Yeah, I guess that's some of it.

Just to set things straight. It's less Jesse Pinkman:

And more kabuki theater (without all the extra o's):

Yeah I have no idea what a Yo-she is. Yosh-ee on the other hand is a cool motherfucker.

What does Jeff Gerstmann make of this news?

Likely start calling Yoshi "T.Bone" or something.

My....my world is crumbling....

Posted by hawkinson76

@dazzhardy: No, @shawns is correct, that is clearly a name of a species, not an individual. I don't see how anyone could read that as the name of an individual on its face, and in the context of the caption it is clearly denoting a species (like Homo Nintendonus, which is not Mario's name).

This suggests that an "Evil" Yoshi would be of species T. Yoshisourus Munchanintendonus, a Yoshi that eats Marios.

I'm from the UK and I've always called it Yo-she. I have known people who pronounce it Yosh-ee, but they're in the minority.

Is this just another example of the north-south divide?

@zigx: Tails was never "without" his full name. The name Miles Prower appears in the intro to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was Tails' first appearance.

That's worse than Miles Prower.
