Yoshi's Real Name Is...T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas?

My entire world has been turned upside down by this revelation.

This is too weird not to share! Console Wars author Blake Harris has been going through a Nintendo Character Guide from 1993. It's meant to instruct folks on the who, where, and what of Nintendo characters.

Amongst a bunch of other interesting tidbits Harris has been tweeting out, the book contains biographical information about Yoshi, and it's revealed the dino's real name is--wait for it--T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas.

I'm not sure if I like Yoshi more or less because of this revelation.

@alistercat: Then most of England has no idea how Japanese is pronounced.

Next you're going to tell me that Mario's last name is Mario.

Edited by TruthTellah

But, @patrickklepek... this isn't true. It seems like a clear misunderstanding that many people are running with.

His name is Yoshi. His species is properly known as T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas. Like a T. Rex or a H. Sapien. Or Mario's "H. Nintendonus" mentioned in the same sentence. H. Nintendonus isn't Mario's real name; it's his made-up species name. If anything, the news here is that Mario isn't a human being.

On Yoshi's Island, there are other Yoshisaurs like him, but Yoshi is a specific green Yoshisaur. Yoshi is Yoshi.

This is all very silly. heh.

Alright kids let me explain this to you. You see there were these wildly popular cartoons about a coyote and a roadrunner and at the start of each episode they were given funny Latin names like "Carnivorous Vulgaris" or "Accelerati Incredibles". So "T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopa" is not Yoshi's name it's his joke Latin name. It was just some copy writer's idea of a joke.

So he's Greek?

That Yoshi is trendy as hell, matching shoes to his neck... spine... things?

Thanks, Polygon article and Alex Navarro tweets and subsequent thread on our own forums from yesterday!

@patrickklepek: That's not his real name, unless you consider your real name to be "H. Sapiens Sapiens." All this means is that Jeff is right and that yoshis are so disposable they don't even have names. The name Yoshi is the equivalent of naming a cat " Cat."

I also take issue with Americans pronouncing it YO-she. Yoshi clearly says Yosh-ee, as do most people in England.

wait, really

It's a stupid dinosaur that can't speak proper words, what does it know about pronunciation?

Edited by Krataur

The T. presumably stands for Tyrannosaurus. Yoshi is related to the T. Rex. Yet more proof he's awesome.

Posted by Rejizzle

Was this secretly Jeff's doing. as his entire "vacation" taken in an effort to spread rumors to discredit Yoshi's good name?

Edited by Itwongo

Homo Nintedonus

That means Yoshi is more closely related to humans than the chimpanzee

Oh woops, that's Mario

Posted by huser

So, Mario isn't even human? Craziness!

I think he might still be considered human. He is still of the Homo genus.

Really? Jeff is out for a week, and this happened?

I am basically completely sure that this is not Yoshi's "real" name but rather a dumb bit of random info some Nintendo of America dude made up when he had nothing better to do. I really don't think this weird piece of trivia needs to be posted on every game site as if it's some grand revelation.

Sidenote: What in the world is the difference between yo-shi and yosh-i? Those sound identical to me and the argument is dumb.

Oh man. @patrickklepek, PLEASE have this be the "disturbing intro/intermission" GIF for your next Spookin' With Scoops.

I wasn't aware Kotaku was doing guest articles for Giant Bomb. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to find out which stadium lighting fixtures look sort of like characters from Valve games.

I don't care what you say, his name is Yoshi

@sessh: i believe that is a taco!!!! get your eyes checked!

Ah, 90s Nintendo of America, trying to make sense of Shigeru Miyamoto's mind in a US-marketable, Saturday morning cartoon-like way instead of taking it for the lysergic Japanese rabbit hole that it is.

I guess it would offend me more if Nintendo games weren't designed to absorb the bastardization process in the first place.

Man, I ain't callin' Yoshi shit til we hear from Japan.

Posted by Sanj

I will now be referring to Yoshi as Mr Munchakoopas until he tells me otherwise.

Posted by iBushido

I immediately thought "Tiberius." Just finished listening to the podcast so that explains it. Seriously though, why would they give him such a long name, but not include his first name!? What the hell does the T stand for!? I can't wait to tell my friend and ruin his week.

If this is "too weird not to share" then I hope Patrick never accidentally watches a Luis Buñuel movie or anything.

Try pronouncing Josh like you pronounce Yoshi and you'll get how weird it sounds from the other side.

Surely these headlines can remain part of your personal blog Patrick, wouldn't say it classifies as news.

Posted by pinner458

@alistercat: I'm arguing FOR the non-american pronunciation. Yoshi should be pronounced like Josh is.

It's a website, about video games.

Posted by notdavid

At the retailer I work at, we have a binder from Nintendo reps about how to properly sell Nintendo stuff or some shit. There are a few fun facts in there, notably one about how that garbage from the movie with Mario being Mario's first and last name is true. If this Yoshi garbage is canon, that bullshit has to be canon too. It comes from official Nintendo marketing material.

Edited by falling_fast

i think i like yoshi more now.

also, every time i read someone bitching about whether or not something qualifies as "serious news" for this apparently very serious video gaming site (?), i read yr comments in a lisping, petulant voice in my head. it's the voice i reserve for reading comments by annoying manchildren who take things too seriously.

Have you ever watched a Giant Bomb video or listened to a Giant Bomb podcast? Yoshi is a pretty popular discussion/joke here.

Yes, god forbid someone posts something about video games on a video game website, what an atrocity.

Nice find, Patrick, I look forward to hearing Jeff's reaction to this.

I remember seing this a while ago somewhere, and somehow managing to forget -- Well, thank you Patrick!

Posted by InfiniteGeass

This is what constitutes as "news" now huh?

Posted by nERVEcenter

Who the fuck actually wanted to know this? I'm just going to pretend this never happened. Which will be easy, because that name is ridiculous and hard to remember.

Posted by Xymox

This news has been up for hours and neither the conceptual race of humanoids that mario belongs to, nor T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, is up in the wiki. It says copyright Nintendo, so this is now cannon.
