You Can Be 11 Million aaaaaaand One

Blizzard releases updated subscription figures for World of Warcraft, number of people shouting "you're a wizard" and "you are" at each other poised to reach all-time high.

The Lich King, seen here thinking about wrath.
As the run up to Wrath of the Lich King's release nears a close and people everywhere start fiending for all of the content they've been playing in the World of Warcraft expansion's beta to get out onto the real servers, Blizzard dropped a press release to just let you know that they continue to "run thangs."

Over 11 million people are currently subscribed to the game. That's a worldwide number, including Russia and Latin America, which were recently added to the "let's never go outside again" family of World of Warcraft lovin' locations. The last announcement of the game's player base came back in January, when the company posted 10 million players worldwide, with over 2.5 million of those coming from North America.

Wrath of the Lich King will hit "several regions" on November 13. Not to be an armchair analyst or anything, but I bet that thing will sell pretty well. You heard it here first.

I signed back up and starting playing again this month in hopes that I can reach level 50 by the time the expansion comes out. So far it's going good.

That is absolutely amazing. I wonder if I'm one of those 11 million. I have an account but at the moment, it's frozen. I guess that still counts.

I am a WoW player - I'm a statistic!!! Yes!

I was one of the lucky ones ,I was there from the start for aroud 3-4 months and its an extremely fond gaming memory due to the atmosphere of half of britxbox.co.uk joining up and making a guild whilst discovering everything that was new,but i'm done with that game now and I can't ever see me going back without getting bored in a matter of minutes.
I never understood why they don't do a 360 or PS3 version.
Guild wars would make a superb console RPG and it's about time console got some online rpg goodness.

I tried to go back during the summer after taking a bit of a break, it was then I realized how bored I was and I logged in as if I were going to work.

From what I understand, they only count current active accounts in the numbers they use for press releases.

No, that's only active accounts. NOT frozen ones.

Milkman - don't let Bob Colayco see that comment, he would be enraged :) Blizz said countless times: they only include active accounts, not frozen or trial ones.

keyhunter - no, not really.

I used to play WoW, but 2+ years of eating up my free time since its release on my nights off was enough. Even my wife was hooked.
There are too many other great games out now to bother playing this constantly anymore.
I'm happy to say I haven't logged into a WoW server for over a year now.

Thumbs up for Rich Gallup reference

I completed WoW a long time ago (pretty much all of Burning Crusade shit) and I'm past people telling me to log on at a certain time and have some wierd Romanian guy shout at me through mic telling me to apply my DPS................

Yeah, done with WoW and MMOs.

I don't understand what people see in WoW. But there are a lot of things I don't understand when it comes to people's tastes.

@ Kohe321: lol

The caption to that picture is pure awesome. But on topic, 11 million active subscribers, holy shit. Just goes to show WoW has still got some legs. Can't wait for the new expansion.

Did XBL subscribers surpass this number?

So glad I kicked this habit.  I've been a much happier soul since I quit.

When you get to know him, the Lich King actually isn't such a bad guy.
