Your Letter-Writing Campaign Finally Paid Off: Chrono Trigger Comes to Virtual Console this Monday

Legendary RPG will finally be available digitally through Nintendo's nostalgic download service.

Nintendo launched the Wii in late 2006, and along with it, the Virtual Console. This online method for re-purposing classic games as digital downloads has existed for four and a half years. In that time, a number of bona fide classics have hit the service, and yet up until now, one particularly gaping hole remained in the catalog of available Super Nintendo titles: Square Enix's much-beloved role-playing game, Chrono Trigger.

I bet just staring at that box art is giving you the vapors right about now.
I bet just staring at that box art is giving you the vapors right about now.

Grumble indignantly about Squeenix's disdain for you and the rest of the series' fanbase no more, as the publisher will finally plug that Chrono Trigger-sized hole as of this Monday, May 16. The game will be available in the Virtual Console store for the standard SNES game price of 800 Wii Points ($8).

Finally, one of the greatest RPGs of all time will join such previously-released Super Nintendo masterpieces as Darius Twin, Cybernator, Vegas Stakes, Rival Turf, both goddamned Aero the Acro-Bat games, and Squeenix's own Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. Oh, and a bunch of Mario games, I guess.

While this will likely only serve as a temporary distraction from your decade-long bitterness over Squeenix's almost remarkable unwillingness to further the series with a new installment, at least now people finally have a new way to appreciate this undeniable classic of the role-playing genre. After all, it's been, what, like three years since the DS version came out? That might as well be an eternity!

@hack745 :  The pox port is utter crap with more disc loading pauses and skipping than William shanters acting.

You are clueless and must have never been with in 12 feet of the SNES original to think it is good. or a noob.

I also find it hilarious if you do think the psx port was good.

I have the SNES and PS1 version still, but I'd rather not hook either system up to replay this. I'd probably buy the VC version since it's half the price of the DS version, and I can play it on my TV.

The DS version is the best. Has a section cut from the original game, a much better translation plus all the FMV from the PS1 version without the load times.

I really want to play this game, but out of context it will be hard to enjoy due to the shift in technology today. I remember half the fun of the SNES days was being in awe of the graphics! I really hope they do a remake or continue the series, that would be great!

If only I had a Wii...
guess its a good thing I've had FF Chronicles for like 10 years and can play Chrono Trigger whenever the hell I want on my PS3, or PS2.

Patience is rewarded, grasshopper.
But y'know what? Get the DS version instead. The bonus areas and content isn't half bad.

While the SNES was a host too a ton of fun, great, classic RPGs I would have to say this one is still the best. It's still a ton of fun to this day and definitely one of the best games ever made (J)RPG or not.

It seems like the profits from the DS version have finally tapered off enough for them to need another version of this game sitting out there on the market.

Goddamn it that box art is terrible. It does not evoke anything important about the game. Themes, story, lore... nothing of the sort. It's just three of the main characters fighting some generic-ass mid-boss on a plain background. They should have gone the Final Fantasy route and have Amano draw some high and beautiful art just for the box art.

To be fair, the box is probably the only bad thing about the game.

well with their dysmal earnings report I suppose they decided to mint some chrono trigger money, as they aren't really selling the ds copy anymore. I do have a vivid memory of staring at that box cover at wal mart when i was on some stupid school trip, sadly the money i had for the weekend trip was much less than the 106$ asking price (yes games used to be even more expensive) i settled on some shitty pc game compilation pile of shit and rued not having the money for trigger.

i'm still broken up over it, but not as much as squeek was with his dad's indifference to him giving up hamster style...

*sigh*

it reminds me of my step dad buying magic sword instead of f-zero, then he gave me magic sword for my birthday after he played it and realized it sucked. (whata dick) Ironically going back and playing magic sword recently i found it to be kinda decent with some cool ideas.

Thanks Nintendo, but I'm already enjoying the hell out of the DS release.

This is great news for other fans, though! There are so many games on Virtual Console that I'd die to replay, if only I didn't have a job and school...

We got Mega Man X a couple weeks back and now Chrono Trigger? It's as though Nintendo is trying to make amends for something?

Didn't they make a port of this on PS1? I think I have it a box somewhere.  In fact I have a whole box full of PS1 role-playing games I've said I would get around to playing some day because, well, because I like to lie to myself

I wonder how many people buy updated versions of games on new systems, like Chrono Trigger, and never end up playing them - I've already done it more times than I should - damn nostalgia!
