Your Wii Games Won't Be Upscaled On Wii U

Wii games will look just like Wii games on Wii U.

No Caption Provided

Wii hardware was capable of playing GameCube discs, but that won't be possible in Wii U. Since it's compatible with Wii remotes and accesories, it'll obviously play Wii discs, but the question is whether Nintendo will alter the look of those Wii games with the more powerful Wii U.

The answer is no, based on a conversation I had yesterday with Mark Franklin, head of Nintendo's public relations. Pop in a Wii disc, the games will play like they did on the Wii.

No upscaling or texture filtering, unfortunately.

Ah well. The dream of effortlessly getting Super Mario Galaxy 2 in HD has been shot down.

How else are they going to try to resell you HD versions of the same crap you've already bought?  Typical Nintendo.
Yep, and with the vastly expanded bluray-like-storage they're using for the Wii U, they'll be able to cram together tons of games for HD collection re-releases.

i think its strange that reggie told geoff keighley that wii games are made with assets that dont scale up .

just look at any youtube video of someone playing a wii game on an emulator , stuff looks like its able to scale up to higher resolutions.

and they look pretty sweet compared to what they look when you run them on a wii.

That's the thing, if you want to play games for free in HD from the Wii that option is there. Why should Nintendo pay to put it in their new console? Thanks.

Cause I want a hassle-free and non-illegal way to do it? Plus it wouldn't cost much, it's not like they need extra hardware, it's all software. It wouldn't even take a great many man-hours to do. Hell the PS3 did it like 5 years ago.

In days like this, you pay to play or steal. Your choice. To me, it's all about cost reduction and profit. But it's a business, so black is better than red. I'll buy it again and again. I'm a fool like that.

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?

But yeah I bought the dang game once, and when it's like a 15 year old adventure game or even 10 year old PS2 title, whatever I don't mind paying again. But Galaxy 2 is relatively new paying for it again isn't that attractive.

I'll bite if it's both the Galaxy games for 20 bucks or something, but definitely not paying full price again. Especially since all these HD releases on other platforms are like 10$ downloadables or a 30$ disc with more than two games on 'em.

Well, dammit Nintendo. I want Wii U to be able to play my Wii, GC, Snes and Nes and GB games for the heck of it, all in glorious HD, or no BUY.

No, not really, shees people. If this wasn't not a news page, it wouldn't be a problem. I know you guys by now.

I get the crazy feeling that this system will not see the light of day. I also believe in Jon Davisons opinion on Weekend Confirmed that this system may be the one that blows up in Nintendo's face.

Having no backward's compatibility with GC games and no upscaling at least for their major titles like Mario when it has already been developed in HD is a huge deal breaker for me.

I seriously hope Nintendo is put to rest when they release this crap system.

And that's why you emulate Wii games on PC and play Super Mario Galaxy in High Definition.

Dolphin simply draws the geometry at a higher resolution, providing sharper edges through higher resolution (and also through AA if you enable it), which can make a game look a lot better even with low-res textures. The textures are still the same low-res textures as you saw when playing on the Wii itself. There aren't any hidden texture files on the disc, and the Wii isn't downsizing them. The textures may look better when the game is rendered at a higher resolution due to how they fill the larger surface, or if some upscaling interpolation is used, but there isn't an extra texture file sitting around from the original Wii disc that the emulator is then using, unless somebody has manually recreated new texture files for use with the emulator (which a number of people do and have been doing for other emulators for a while). If you heard that Wii games were developed with higher resolution geometry and textures then you heard correct, but understand that NEARLY ALL GAMES are developed like this. Pretty much every modern game uses high-res meshes and textures that are simplified and then made to look nicer with various shaders and post-processing effexts so that acceptable performance can be achieved on the anticipated hardware while maintaining a certain level of quality. Its a part of development, not some conspiracy to kill your video quality, and the high-res meshes and textures from development are not hidden on the disc you buy.

There has also been only a few GC games re-released for the Wii, so why does everybody think that Nintendo is going to re-release all the big Wii games for the WiiU? I would love to play Galaxy and Prime 3 with little AA applied, but those games already look decent as they weren't ported up from the GC like Twilight Princess. It would be nicer to have the upscaling for some GC games, but its not a dealbreaker.

Of course not. They'd want to hold on to make an HD remake. Pffffffffffff (<-- that was a fart).

actually it would be upscaled not by choice especially if your using the HDMI cord instead of the RCA jacks. look at dvd's using a blue ray player they are read by that but not really upscaled only by using the hdmi cord cause that is what that port does. the graphics themselves would stay the same yes but the stream to the tv would be HD. you gotta read between the lines and know the tech. did you know the majority of people that wanted nintendo to remake the wii only wanted a HDMI port on the back? because the cord combined with the tv upscales the image automatically. look at xbox360 yes it has power for HD but the original 360 used an HDMI port to connect to the HDTV in order for the tv to upscale the game. The screens you would get may not be HD on the disc but through the port it would look like it was HD.
