Zipper Interactive Developing SOCOM 4

Original SOCOM team to take on the next true sequel in Sony's original online shooter franchise.

Zipper Interactive's Jeremy Dunham has revealed the existence of the studio's first post-MAG project, and it's SOCOM 4.

Wait, let me do that again.

It's SOCOM 4!!!! Here are three screenshots!!!!

There. Somewhere, Method Man--enough of a SOCOM fan to include references to it on an album--just dropped whatever smoking device he was using and grinned. He's not quite sure why, but he'll know soon enough.

The game is scheduled to be released this fall on the PlayStation 3 and will contain a full single-player component as well as 32-player multiplayer.

You may remember that Zipper was the original developers of the SOCOM series, which quickly became the main reason that the PS2's crazy online adapter thing was worth owning. While Zipper was focused on MAG, Slant Six released SOCOM: Confrontation as a downloadable PS3 release, and it... didn't really do anything for me. I don't think that's entirely Slant Six's fault, of course, but I'll definitely say that it's good to hear that the original studio is back on mission.

Geoff Keighley's GameTrailers TV will exclusively run the first video from SOCOM 4 tonight on Spike TV.     Jeff Gerstmann on Google+

Finally, SOCOM needs to get back on track. those first two were really good.

I have never enjoyed the SOCOM games, but i'm glad to see that fans of the series will finally get a good and proper version of the game again.

Posted by DukesT3

Thats cool.

And before anyone runs into a wall or something. no, they're not cutting support for MAG.

Posted by Crono11

Nothing against Socom but when Sony said that there was a secret game I was really hoping for something else. Happy for Socom fans though.

Posted by fugie7

awesome, im very interested in what these guys are going to do with this game. looking foward to read more information about it when it comes out.

Posted by eclipsesis

If they optimised the game like God of War III, and thought of some really intense military situations then i could see this game being awesome-sauce

Posted by onimonkii

will it come bundled with a headset or do you still have to buy the shitty one for that?

Posted by Winternet

This fall?! That's soon.

Finally!

Not what I was expected at all, nor at all want I wanted, actually this was the worst of the worst for me that they could have announced.

Posted by LCadejoNegro

this is awesome, i played socom 1-3 (also the first psp game) and even confrontation, so this game can not come soon enough!!

Posted by sandwich_adjustment

socom 1...those were the days

Posted by MAN_FLANNEL

Unsurprisingly, that looks like MAG.

Posted by Soap

this is the big announcement? Lame.

(I'll just repeat myself here)

Don't we already have MAG? I'd rather we wait a year or two for another SOCOM and Sony devote resources to something else while we see how MAG does.

I quite liked the new PSP game (Fireteam Bravo 3) so I have some interest in this. It's just a little too hardcore for me.

Posted by onimonkii

second question: can this be considered a noscon? too soon to judge?

Posted by Atomasist

SOCOM!

Also, for those disappointed with the announcement -- Syphon Filter PS3, Starhawk and MotorStorm 3 are all totally still in development. Just be patient.

Comes out this fall... and Zipper had been working on MAG.  Hmmm, seems to me like they hired some more guys at Zipper to make this while the true Zipper guys were making MAG.  So they could say Zipper is making this, but who really knows if the guys who made the first Socom actually touched this.

QUICK, SOMEONE ALERT THE EM EE TEE EICH OH DEE MAN

Posted by FuzzYLemoN

YAY!
*Breaks Confrontation disk*

Posted by MisterB_66

Confrontation is fine now, after all the patches.  Either way that game (and MAG) will simply be a wasteland the second this comes out.  I cannot wait.

fuk yes

Posted by DukeTogo

A modern military shooter?  How innovative!  Just like everything else these days it comes down to same shit different day.  Motion controls might be goofy, but at least they'll force games to change.

Posted by brocool

Got burned by confrontation + faulty headset that came with it, now MAG is stuck in my YLOD 60gb.. I AINT TOUCHING THIS!

Nice to see Zipper back making SOCOM. I think out of any game I've ever owned, S2 got the most playtime. Hopefully they can make something as good as 2.

Posted by FRIEZA

I'v played all the socom's on ps2 but never touched Confrontation. This fall, that's soon and Cod 7 will come out then too. I hope both will be great because Mw2 mulltiplayer was a huge fail.

...This was the "secret announcement"? Oh.

Posted by RobotHamster

This is going to be awesome! And they'll still be working on MAG which is great.

Posted by RavenShade83

Visions of breach on sandstorm are dancing through my head....strange motion in my pants. All is right with the world

Posted by TheLastNeo

I stopped playing socom with confrontation cuz it sucked so much ass, and I didnt feel like sitting around and waiting for patch after broken patch....

This might make me get a ps3 again, after the massive let down that Socom was..

Posted by Daryl

I'll try not to get hooked into another multiplayer shooter because I'll end up regretting it a month later.

Posted by KaosAngel

FUCK YES!  I LOVED SOCOM 1 AND SOCOM 2!

THANK YOU ZIPPER AND BRING BACK THE VOICE COMMANDS LIKE IN THE PS2 GAMES!  YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!

They didn't say big, they said surprise, and I don't think anyone expect SOCOM 4 as the announcement.

I'm really surpised that Zipper is moving on to another project so quickly (well I guess they've had this going for a while). I wonder why they would get something ready for the same year rather than support MAG for a while
Posted by Milkman

I think the time for SOCOM has kind of come and gone. But I guess if anyone is going to revive it, then it would Zipper.

I recommend you read PSblog post before you go of on a rant like this. Zipper is big studio, 150 ppl and still hiring that's two teams just  like Insomniac, that is two teams. MAG will get support for long long times, those are their words, they say they have team devoted to MAG and it's not like they began working on Socom 4 yesterday, games seems to be far into debelopment, hell it is coming this year. Calm down and read.
Posted by SPACETURTLE

Uh yeah! I remember SOCOM on the PS2 with the online adapter being a lot of fun!

Posted by inspectah

Finally !!! I hope they go back to 8v8 ! Now that there experiment with Mag * BF:bc2 is better IMO* We can get back to Socom my first ever online shooter that i played *Tears*

Posted by ch3burashka

What with MAG just being released, this seems early, even unnecessary.

Posted by rargy

I could go for more Socom.  The PS2 games were great.

Posted by yakov456

I gave up on Confrontation, this just may be what I need to really get me hooked on Socom again. Nice!

Posted by RisingRaiden

Just what I wanted!!!! AWESOME

Posted by clubsammich

As long as they're still working with MAG, I'm happy.

Posted by FCKSNAP

I like how this is sorta the opposite of the IW situation.
